Video Transcript for Curt Ball Mounts C20001 Review

Today we're going to review part number C20001. This is the Curt 6-point hex wrench for trailer hitch balls with 3/4 inch or 1 inch diameter shanks. This is a sturdy, easy ball wrench which makes it easy to tighten down your trailer hitch ball to your ball mount. Measures about 15 inches in length. Does use the 6 point hex pattern, so it won't strip out the nut. Works better than any of the 12 point hex patterns This does have 2 different size hex heads on it.

1 is designed to fit hex balls that have a 3/4 inch diameter shank, and the larger one is for the hitch balls that use a 1 inch shank. Basically, they are marked. This is 1 and 1/8 inch size and this is 1 and 1/2 inch size. I do happen to have a hitch ball here that has a 1 inch diameter shank, so you can see the nut that is on it. It'll use the 1 1/2 inch size and as you can see, because it's a 6 point hex pattern, grips the nut completely so there's no stripping of it. That should do it for the review on part number C20001, the Curt 6-point hex wrench for trailer hitch balls with 3/4 inch or 1 inch diameter shanks.

Purchased a Curt 6-point wrench for trailer hitch balls. The low price is matched by poor finishes, which is to be expected, I guess. Even though I read some reviews before purchase that commented on the sharp plating edges, I ended up cutting my hand on the shards of metal that protruded from the metal edges. Ten or fifteen minutes of work with a file cleaned up the hazardous sharp edges, but removed the chrome so the wrench will rust more easily if not kept clean and dry. The wrench arrived with a small amount of rust. That's OK...I expect utility, not beauty from this tool. It is an inexpensive tool, and I hope to get good use from it.

Haven't needed to use it.

It does the job! It's a wrench! It turns the bolt! It's made in China and the label that displays the brand name of the wench is put on with the stickiest glue on the planet. You know, the kind of glue that once you take the label off the glue is still there. So you take soap and a scrubby to it, but all the glue does is move around on the metal and lump together. And then you try hot water, and that smears the glue from lumpy to all over. So you get a piece of steel wool, as surely that will remove the glue, and yes, some does come off the wrench to stick to the steel wool. Finally you give up with the glue thing and use the wrench, and you end up with a sticky hand, and then you do some other trailer type things that render your hand dirty and greasy, grab the wrench again, and viola! You now have a wrench that is coated with sticky, dirty, grease. So you grab a paper towel... and now you have a wrench with glue, grease, dirt, and paper towel stuck to it. So you get the Acetone. And that removes everything. I recommend starting with the acetone.

Handy wrench for dealing with hitch ball of the most popular shank sizes

Provided even contact on nut walls and plenty of leverage. I used my trailer hitch to support the ball mount (rather than a shop vise), with the ball facing down. Much better than using a pipe wrench.

What can you say - will see how long it lasts. Great service

Great tools to have. Easy installation. Everything works as expected.

I can't believe how great this wrench is considering how low the price was. I regret not buying one of these years ago. No more abusing hitch balls with a pipe wrench because I don't have the right-sized wrench!

Unnecessary label impossible to completely remove. Works as expected.

Well, it's a wrench and it does what a wrench should do. And it's made in Taiwan, which is a step above China made stuff. If it were made in the US, I would have given it top marks.

Support US manufacturing by offering more US made products.

Didn't realize that I needed a wrench this big and that it did even exist until I tried to bolt on the 2" hitch ball. Nothing comes close in price and gets the job done just fine.

This wrench is just what I needed for the ball hitch. I think the 6-point is great for the torque needed. Thanks for a great price and fast shipping. Robert

It's a wrench, what can I say? Fit my 3/4 and my 1 inch trailer ball nuts as advertised. Made in China.

just received my order and was very happy everything came as I ordered. I am also very pleased it arrived faster than I thought it would and that a follow up e-mail was sent to make sure I was happy. I will definitely order from Etrailer again.

Makes mounting trailer balls to a hitch a breeze!

It's a wrench and it works.

Nice wrench..Worked just like it was supposed to...I don't like the sticker..Impossible to remove, so i just taped over it so i would not be left with all the sticky residue.

Great for its intended purposes and for fending off bears.

It's a big wrench. It did it's job and tightened a nut. I haven't tried it yet to loosen a nut, but I expect it'll do just fine

Wrench had one use in life, to tighten a nut. It did that and has been retired to teh bottom drawer of my tool box, where I expect it still resides

Didn't even know these existed! Nice to keep in the vehicle so I can always change ball sizes on my hitch.

arrived in perfect condition will make a great spirit to have on hand in case it’s needed.

Great for putting different balls on the various hitches i have. A better fit than the 18 inch adjustable wrench I normally use

Did what it was supposed to do. Quality appears to be excellent. Fast Shipping.

Great tool to have for replacing ball m ount.

Have already used it and it worked great. Plenty of leverage and I like that it has 6 sides to grip the nut better.

  • What Size Wrench is Needed for a 2" Hitch Ball with 1 Inch Diameter Shank
You will need a 1-1/2" wrench like part # C20001 in order to install the nut on the 2" Hitch Ball part # 63845. A 1-7/8" wrench would be much too large.

  • What Size Wrench is Used to Tighten Curt 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Ball 40038
Curt hitch ball # 40038 has a 1 inch diameter shank. For Curt balls with 3/4 or 1 inch diameter shanks you would use wrench # C20001. The nut on that ball should use the 1-1/2 inch end of the wrench. You could also use a large crescent wrench if you have one large enough.

  • Tips for Getting a Nut Loose From a Ball on a Ball Mount
Tightening a ball to a ball mount does require a substantial amount of foot pounds of torque. The lock washer puts further tension on it. What you can do is put the ball mount in the shank side ways and use a special wrench for the large nut to get enough leverage to break the nut free. If it was cross threaded, you will not want to re-use the ball due to thread damage. Some penetrating oil might also help. Let it soak in for 15 minutes. Curt makes a wrench, # C20001, if the ball you have...

  • How to Loosen the Nut Holding a Ball on a Ball Mount
You will need to use a cheater bar on the end of the wrench to get enough leverage to loosen the nut on the ball on ball mount # C45036. Chances are the crescent wrench has a wide and flat handle so you will likely need to go to a hardware store to get a steel pipe wide enough to fit on the end of the handle. It probably doesn't have to be too long, 2 feet. I once had trouble with a lug nut on a car and the only thing I had on hand was a very long piece of chain link fence post and it...

  • Wrentch for Curt Hitch Ball # A-82
For 2" Curt hitch ball # A-82 you want to use Curt 6-Point Hex Wrench for Trailer Hitch Balls with 3/4" or 1" Diameter Shanks # C20001 and use the 1-1/8" end. I've added a link to a video review of the wrench for you to check out.

  • Availability of 1-7/8-Inch Socket for Hitch Ball Installation
We do offer a 1-7/8-inch socket # ALL643216 that fits a 3/4-inch drive socket wrench. Since hitch balls need to be torqued to a specific rating I suggest you use a calibrated 3/4-inch torque wrench to re-install the hitch ball. Proper torque is required for the hitch ball to meet its specs.

  • Socket for Installing 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball
While we do not have a wrench with a 1-7/8" end, we do have the 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216. This would work, although it does require a 3/4" drive socket wrench which you would need to source at a local hardware store.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Ford Escape
The Ball Mount Kit part # 989900 does not include a wrench to tighten the hitch ball down. For a wrench to go with this kit you would want the part # C20001. For a trailer hitch the part # 75758 that you referenced would be the correct hitch to use. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118566.

  • Installation of Hitch Ball on Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System Head
The Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # 66557 is not able to come with the hitch ball installed and torqued. You would then need the 2" Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter x 2-1/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 7,500 lbs # 63845 which would need to be torqued to 250 ft/lbs as stated in the product description. It is a 1-1/2 inch nut so you can use a socket or wrench like # C20001. Most torque wrenches don't go to that spec, so you simply need to make sure the lock washer is completely...
