One-Step Installation

The Curt Echo is unique for its plug-and-play installation. With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Echo is a breeze.

Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller Installation

The main unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. Use the included strap, found inside the cap, to secure the Echo in place. It will help ensure a constant connection between vehicle and trailer.

That done, download the OneControl app on your Apple or Android smartphone and wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth, following the in-app instructions. It should take about 5 seconds for them to pair. Once paired, the LED light on the unit will turn a solid blue. Plug in your trailer's 7-way and let the whole system calibrate for another 5 seconds. When the LED turns green, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the app and save it as a profile. Then you're ready to tow!

Note: See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Control Your Towing with Your Smartphone and an App

Besides the crazy-easy installation, the Echo is unique for giving you control of your towing through your smartphone. You can set the maximum braking output, adjust the braking sensitivity, apply the manual override - all from the OneControl app.

Completely wireless, the Echo connects to the app via Bluetooth. You can save multiple towing profiles in the app, a big plus if you have a fleet and want to be able to just select a pre-set configuration and get towing. And don't worry; after you've downloaded the app, you don't need to have data on to use the app with the brake controller. You'll be able to receive calls and texts and access your other apps.

User-Friendly OneControl App

Simple, intuitive, and user-friendly, the OneControl App makes it wicked easy to manage your settings and control your trailer.

how does the One Control app work

1. Manual Override

This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.

Curt Echo App Manual Override Button

Quick tip: Put manual override right at your fingertips by adding this button (C83HR - sold separately) to your dash. The app must be running for the button to work, but it can be in the background while you use other apps on your phone. The button has an adhesive pad for a quick-stick installation and includes an easily replaceable battery.

2. Brake Output Indicator

The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.

3. Max Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop.

To set your maximum braking output, tap this button and increase or decrease using the + and - buttons. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change.

4. Sensitivity Level

This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level. This is a great adjustment to make when you're towing a heavy load and the trailer will need more umph to bring it to a stop so it doesn't push your vehicle forward.

Just like max output, if you need to change your sensitivity level, use the + and - buttons. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, lower the setting. You may also need to adjust the sensitivity based on your own preferences, or when the trailer load or road conditions change.

5. Vehicle Hazard Lights

If you turn on your vehicle's hazard lights, there's a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash. Turn this setting on any time you activate your hazard lights to prevent this problem.

Save Multiple Trailer Profiles

Curt Echo App saves multiple trailer profiles

Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store multiple profiles for both trailers and vehicles so that your preferred settings will be ready to go as soon as you hook up. This is perfect if you own a fleet and don't want to have to reset the controller every time you swap out trucks, trailers, or drivers. You'll have the ideal settings saved and waiting for you. To switch between profiles, just swipe left or right.

OneControl: One-Stop App for Towing

If you like the idea of monitoring your trailer from your phone, the other OneControl systems could be a great fit for you.

The Curt True Course (C94VV - sold separately) is an advanced Bluetooth sway control system that automatically triggers the trailer brakes (independent of the vehicle's brakes and the brake controller) when it detects dangerous trailer movement. The Curt Tire Linc (C54VV - sold separately) Bluetooth TPMS monitors the temperature and pressure of your trailer tires. All of these systems use the OneControl app so you can manage all of them in the same place on your phone.

LED Status Indicator

troubleshooting Echo brake controller

The LED indicator light on the top of the plug-in module will show you when the brake controller is connected. You can also check the LED for simple diagnostics when you need to troubleshoot.

Weatherproof Construction

Is the Curt Echo weatherproof

Because the Echo mounts outside the vehicle, it's designed for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way plug that reduces vibration and helps ensure a constant connection.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Curt Echo brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Echo uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to ensure that your trailer slows at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

I like the fact that I have a proportional brake controller I can stick in my glove box. It doesn’t have to be hardwired to the vehicle which is nice because I can use it on different applications. This one is definitely a plus over time delay brake controllers.

After an initial issue and replacement, the product has worked very well. Having an adjustable proportional controller that you can throw in your glove box is pretty handy. It’s response time is very quick.

by:

The Echo is a convenient trailer brake. It's easy to set up and use every time I hook up my trailer. I use Bluetooth from an old smartphone mounted to the left of of my steering wheel so I can keep my cell phone free.

The only problem is that the rubber strap kept getting un latched from the rubber pin. So I just use two bungee-balls to keep the ECHO connected to the car harness and the trailer plug. (see Photo)

Fantastic / effortless! I drive a Volvo XC40 and needed the most minimal, non-intrusive brake controller I could find. All you need is the corresponding app, you pair this controller to the app via bluetooth, and configure it (just 2 settings for trailer brake output & sensitivity) and you're good to go. No need to rely on the app during driving at all, the brake controller stores the settings and just does its thing without you needing to look at the app or have it open. It's handy for testing the brakes, there is a button on the app where you can virtually press the brakes, so I stand by my trailer brakes, press the button, and test that I hear them engaging - super convenient since I do setup alone. Safety features ensure that if the phone loses connection, the brake controller just keeps working. Super happy with my purchase.

Easy set up. Very smart brake controller. Brakes only as needed, and is very adjustable. I was skeptical about these proportional brake controllers (they use an accelerometer to sense how fast the towing vehicle is slowing down), but I am a believer now. Only thing to check: make sure your 7 pin connector’s auxiliary 12V is connected to at least a 20A fuse. The product says it needs to be connected to a 30A breaker, but I don’t think you’ll find many vehicles where that’s the case. 20A seems standard, and in my case more than enough. I am not sure is 20A May be a problem for those needing to brake two axles though. Worth looking into that before buying the controller.

Still enjoying using this wireless blue tooth controller. My only gripe is that the little rubber strap that comes with it is too flimsy and does not lock in place. I got rid of it.

by:

As long as you follow the directions for hooking it up precisely, it works marvelously. Especially, if like us, no OEM brake controller was available for our Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I give it a low rating, however, because it is made very cheaply. Just from regular use (plugging it in and unplugging it), the unit cracked, and then after 1-2 more uses it completely fell apart. See the pictures.

2022 Ford Bronco

Picked up my teardrop in ABQ on 2/17/23, and the Echo was easy to mount and sync to my phone, and worked flawlessly the 175 mile trip home. I also got my longer 3-way curt ball mount from etrailer, and it is a beast and also worked perfectly!

Purchased for use on my Jeep wrangler towing a forest river popup. very dissatisfied with this controller. Coupler often requires multiple cycles to connect to bluetooth. Unable to use any settings above the minimums for sensitivity and output or trailer brakes grab and squeal. this does not occur when I use it on my pickup with a standard brake controller. Cannot use with hazard flashers on - the brakes pulse with each flash no matter what setting is selected for hazard lights. There is no access to the editing as described in the online instruction manual.

I purchased the Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller in October 2022 when I bought an RV. I have been nothing but happy with this product. You download the app on your cellphone, input some basic info into the app, plug the device in the back of your vehicle, and plug the outlet of the RV in it. Voila, you're done. The device communicates with your cellphone and synchronizes the brakes of your vehicle with those on your RV: you step on the brake in your vehicle and it automatically activates the brakes on your RV. I'm a total idiot when it comes to all things electronic but was able to make the system work seamlessly in a couple of minutes. I highly recommend this product.

by:

I just received the wireless brake controller so my experience using it is still little, however it was very easy to setup. It took about 2 minutes to plug in and get setup once the app was installed on my phone. I pulled my trailer around the block and worked to setup the sensitivity and it seems to work flawlessly. I like how I can setup multiple profiles for my different trailers. I lease my truck to it is nice that I don't have to install wiring and install the controller onto the dash of the truck knowing I will most likely turn it in at the end of the lease

I have had the wireless brake controller for about a year now, and I have to say it has worked flawlessly. It connects to my phone each time without fail also. It is a bit more expensive than a wired controller but in my opinion, the ease of use and ability to use in different vehicles makes it well worth the investment.

by:

Initially wouldn’t connect to iPhone but after uninstall/reinstall of app it was fine. After literally traveling around the entire US I have to say it was a blessing with plug-and-play simplicity and total control over braking parameters. The phone lost Bluetooth connection a few times while traveling but the controller maintains the program so no big deal. For me it was nice to see the braking rate on the phone graphic. GREAT PRODUCT! 5 stars!

by:

I used the wiring harness and 7/4 pin receiver from etrailer to wire my 2021 Toyota Highlander to use the Curt Echo. It worked flawlessly the first time. So far I haven’t needed to make adjustments from the original settings for my R-Pod 180 travel trailer. I do wish there were better instructions for initial set up.

When this arrived I opened the box and did not have any packing material to cushion the contents inside to prevent damage. The right side of the controller was cracked open (screw missing) and one of the pins inside is bent. I was able to repair the damage on the side. Have not plugged it in to see if it works.

This Bluetooth enabled controller has worked well over the last year. It’s fast to instal and the portability between vehicles is a nice feature, especially if you plan changing your tow vehicle in the near future. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that I don’t like the rubber strap that secures it to our 7 pin connector. The metal pin can fall out and I often worry the device will become disconnected or fall out when I’m driving, although it warns you on your cell phone when this happens. Having a dash mount for your cell phone is a must to use it properly.

Larry

After two years it’s still working well. I’ve had some issues getting it to connect properly when I first install it, but I think this is due to corrosion on my cable and not the controller itself. I would still buy it again. It’s a quick solution if your vehicle is not equipped with a brake controller. My fears of it falling out while driving were unfounded. I’m getting better at using the rubber fastener. Although, I still think a better way of securing the devise would improve the product.

by:

This works really well. I’m able to control the brake from my phone and put it away when I don’t need it. I have two tow vehicles and didn’t have to install brake controllers in either

by:

Great option for those with multiple tow vehicles and/or multiple trailers. Quick setup, very easy to use. There is a barely-perceptible delay in engagement, but, nothing that ever hindered performance. Bluetooth connectivity is occasionally spotty, but, the fact that the unit keeps working in its most recent setting until it re-pairs alleviates any problems with that, and keeping the phone windshield-mounted improves connectivity drastically. I keep an old phone paired to it and plugged in, so the big orange override button is always available, even if my primary phone is being used for navigation. I do with the unit itself were more compact, and, yes, the strap to secure it did break, but, minor annoyances for a great product.

by:

I purchased the product and it came very quickly. Followed the instructions and it was easy to set up. After asking for help from a friend to test the product, I found it worked very well. The only problem I have is the distance from the brake controller and my cell phone. I have the brake controller on a 40ft motor home. After pairing the cell phone with the brake controller near the device, the connection is lost when I return to the driver's seat in the motor home. This is okay since once the brake controller is set up, the parameters entered are saved if the connection is lost. You only lose the ability to apply the trailer brakes with the cell phone. A longer distance from cell phone to brake controller would be desired.

by:

Ready install. Worked like it should for a year of traveling (then we went to a tow vehicle with built in brakes, but not because the city didn't work perfectly). We live in on the West Coast and hauled our 5500# trailer up & down the Sierras, they UT, ID, WA, OR & Ca they numerous mountain passes. Never an issue. Bluetooth was very reliable and we loved the dash board button, though we never needed it. Highly recommend. Used on our 2016 MB ML350 Bluetec.

by:

The BEST Solution by far if your truck didn’t come equipped with a factory trailer brake controller. This thing works folks and you won’t put a crick in your neck trying to install an aftermarket controller under your dash that will forever be in your way! Get one. It’s worth every penny.

by:

This worked great on my wifes 2020 toyota highlander. No cutting the factory harness just ran a fused hot off the battery all the way back under the body pan very clean set up. Once hooded up to the trailer and bluetoohed to the phone this works great.

Recently had a tow package installed on a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Unfortunately, there is an issue with this model not allowing a computer flash. All lights work but no power to the brake pole on 7-pin. This little adapter solved all my issues bypassing the brake pole and using the brake lights for power. Less than 5mins of setting app up and adjusting brakes. Plug and play, no worry of warranty issues. Etrailer/Curt were very helpful.

I’m very pleased with this controller! Setup was a snap and away we go! Bluetooth connection seems very reliable. Setup for my trailer brakes was so easy. Adjustment via app was very smooth and incremental. I would recommend this one.
There’s a few things I’d change: the plastic body of the controller seems a bit thin and is of the brittle feeling variety. Also I’m going to get something beefier than the rubber strap. Neither are deal breakers. I really like this product.

Since you've already looked at resetting everything and checking the 7-way pins we can skip past those steps. • Why Wouldn't Curt Echo Brake Controller Apply Trailer Brakes with Brake Pedal at Stop
The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 that you have is a proportional controller which means it needs to sense deceleration for it to start applying trailer brakes. If you apply the vehicle brakes while at a stop the controller can tell you aren't moving so it doesn't apply the brakes. Basically when you apply the brakes in the vehicle that tells the Echo that it needs to start looking for deceleration and to apply a proportional amount of braking on the trailer brakes.

  • Can Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller be Used on Vehicle with 4-Way Trailer Connector
You can use the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller part # C51180 on a vehicle that has a 4-way but you'd need to convert it to a 7-way with the part # ETBC7L for it to function properly. Basically your 4-way would plug into the 4-way of the adapter and you'd then run the power wire of the adapter up to the vehicle battery and you'd be set.

  • Curt Echo Coming Loose From Honda Ridgeline 7-pin Connector
I would definitely check that the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 is installed so that the tab on top of the Echo is engaging the tab on the 7-way connector per the included example. These tabs aligning is a security factor to help hold it in place. The Echo requires a good push to make sure it's all the way in the connector and tabs are aligned.
