Welcome to an entirely new towing experience. The Curt Echo brake controller puts you in control of your trailer's braking with mobile, Bluetooth operation. The portable unit installs in seconds and allows you to make braking adjustments straight from your smartphone. Easily transfer the Echo between vehicles and store it when it's not in use.

Simple, Fast Setup

Curt Echo Plug In Brake Controller

With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Curt Echo is a breeze. Just download the Echo Smart Control app on your Apple or Android smart device and follow the in-app instructions. The brake control unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. When all the connections are made, wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth. Once the unit is paired, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the user-friendly app.

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Echo Smart Control App

The Echo Smart Control app is free to download and use. Scan the QR code included with the Curt Echo or search Echo Smart Control in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Curt Echo Manual Control

The custom-designed app allows you to control brake settings, calibrate output, and monitor all braking activity with the touch of a finger. If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override function is easily accessible in the app. Press and hold the large orange circle to manually activate your trailer brakes.

The app will also alert you in the event that your trailer is overloaded or becomes disconnected during travel. Should your smart device ever lose connection, the Echo will default to the settings of the last profile used. So even if your phone battery dies, you can still count on getting proportional trailer braking as long as the unit is in use.

There's no need to worry about missing a call or running multiple apps either. The Echo Smart Control app will continue running in the background if you get a call or switch between apps, and it will not interfere with your vehicle's hands-free multimedia system.

Create Multiple Vehicle-Trailer Profiles

Vehicle Trailer Profiles

The app has the ability to sync up to 5 Echo devices, and the memory function allows you to save unlimited vehicle-trailer profiles. This makes it easy to transfer the Echo between towing setups. This convenience, along with the plug-and-play design, makes the Echo perfect for either occasional towing or commercial fleets.

Weatherproof Construction

Curt Echo Features Diagram

Because the Echo is made to be outside the vehicle, it's engineered for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements, ensuring long-lasting operation despite rain, snow, dirt, mud, and more. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way RV-style plug. This tab helps to reduce vibration and improve connectivity.

LED Status Indicator

Curt Echo Diagnostic Indicator

A single LED on the body of the Echo shows the status of the brake control unit so that you can easily troubleshoot any problems that may arise.

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

Once the Echo is installed, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Initially wouldn’t connect to iPhone but after uninstall/reinstall of app it was fine. After literally traveling around the entire US I have to say it was a blessing with plug-and-play simplicity and total control over braking parameters. The phone lost Bluetooth connection a few times while traveling but the controller maintains the program so no big deal. For me it was nice to see the braking rate on the phone graphic. GREAT PRODUCT! 5 stars!

by:

I like the fact that I have a proportional brake controller I can stick in my glove box. It doesn’t have to be hardwired to the vehicle which is nice because I can use it on different applications. This one is definitely a plus over time delay brake controllers.

by:

Like many, I have an SUV that isn't wired for a brake controller and was nervous about whether a wireless controller would really work. The reviews pointed me toward the Curt Echo, but who knows if it would "really work". I've had it a year now and it's performed flawlessly. As a new trailer owner, it's one less thing to worry about. Now I just have to remember to close all the windows and lock the doors.

by:

I have used this controller to travel cross country, even in inclement conditions. It has one crack in the housting, but it works great. I also like the phone app.

The only reason I didn’t give this product a higher rating is we found out, after the fact, that the controller doesn’t allow a charge to our RV battery like a regular plug does. That should be made ;more apparent in the specs of this product. While there can be rewriting workarounds to this, those weren’t satisfactory options so it is causing us to move to a different brake controller. The operation of this controller, otherwise, is excellent. Simple to use, simple to hook to your phone and worked great with our trailer. Unfortunately we need our battery to be working and charging as we travel since we go “off grid” often. If that’s not a concern of yours, this is an excellent choice.

Comments
We have researched this question with Curt. They advised that the circuit is only rated for 30 amp peak. The constant amp rating is lower but they am not sure what that number is at this time. With the potential of overheating the unit while charging the battery they would not recommend it.

I have been using this brake controller on 9 trips. The support staff from Curt helped me fine tune the brake sensitivity on my first trip and it has worked very well. After the third trip, I added the rubber strap to secure the controller to the trailer 7-way plug-in and it has been flawless.

Comments
I am very happy with the Curt Echo Brake Controller. I recently had to make adjustments to the brake sensitivity in response to adjusting the brake pads and I found that the adjustments on the smartphone app were easy to make. I am very pleased with the product.

Toyota Echo

My daughter ordered a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controler from another dealer and it appeared to be faulty. I contacted eTrailer to confirm my diagnosis and they were very helpful and confirmed that the controller was faulty. As we were in a time crunch to get the trailer brakes operational, I ordered a new controller from eTrailer and it worked as advertized - easy setup and control plus three families can use the same controller instead of having to have 3 separate controllers. Only issue is that it took over a week for them to ship the controller even though they showed it in stock when I ordered it.

Comments
My daughter used the controller to tow her LARGE pop-up trailer nearly 4000 miles last summer and I used the same controller to pull a separate large trailer 150 miles across a hilly interstate to help a friend move. In both cases it worked perfectly.

I used this kit to convert an OEM 4-way flat connector to a 7-way on a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Easy, straightforward install. Only issue I ran into was that I had to elongate the kit mounting bracket holes to use the existing bracket holes. etrailer provides excellent written and video installation instructions.

2011 Ram 1500

I purchased this product for use with my travel trailer(the folks at etrailer shipped it really fast) as my new truck didn't come with one and I didn't want the hassle of installing a wired one, and wasn't wild about having something else under the dash. The setup was very easy. The app downloaded quickly on my phone and paired immediately with the controller. I double checked that the braking function on the phone was actuating the trailer brakes (it was). I haven't pulled my trailer with it yet,but my initial impressions are that it is good quality, is easy to use, and so far has done everything as advertised. I woulf recommend watching etrailer's instructional video on YYoutube.

2019 Ford Ranger

I purchased this controller alongside a new ball-mount hitch. Unfortunately, this was shipped very lazily. The 20-lb hitch was put into the same box as this controller with 6in of empty space and no padding or filler of any kind. I can tell the controller took 20-lb hit, after hit, after hit because the inside of the packaging is rubbed raw from impacts by the controller. This is an electronic device that relies on sensitive accelerometers to judge how much brake pressure to apply. Would you feel comfortable knowing that the safety of your vehicle and perhaps your life is in the hands of a device that was beat to death in shipping? I called and shared this concern but was told that nothing can be done until I experience an actual malfunction. Great, I can't wait to find out while hauling a trailer and risking my life whether the repeated 20-lb hits against the controller caused any damage or not. If you order this controller, make sure you have it shipped alone because if not, they will literally just chuck it in box with other components in a box that is much too big and hope for the best.

2017 Honda Pilot

I needed a trailer brake controller for my 2017 Honda Pilot (in a hurry) and I did not want to drill anything into my dash, as I knew that I might not use my 2017 Honda Pilot to tow anything every again. I knew NOTHING about towing or installing/using a trailer brake controller, but I did know that my 2017 Honda Pilot was factory wired with a 7 pin connector and hitch receiver, so I ordered the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake controller for the two axle travel trailer I was going to tow. I got the device, opened the packaging, followed the simple instructions, paired the device with my iPhone, and connected the travel trailer to my 2017 Honda Pilot...all in under 5 minutes!!! Everything worked PERFECTLY and I drove off to start my 160 mile trip. This device was FANTASTIC and I can't imagine anyone not using this instead of the ones in the dash. Also, I now have this device to use with the truck I plan to purchase to tow the travel trailer on a regular basis, which means I can buy a truck without the built in trailer brake controller! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT, WITH NO RESERVATIONS!

My (European) tow vehicle has no plug-in connector for a wired brake controller, so my only options were an expensive custom wiring job or this wireless alternative. I opted for the latter but have been disappointed. It frequently loses Bluetooth connectivity while traveling. When that happens the controller still works using the last known settings, so one doesn't lose all trailer braking. However, without Bluetooth one does lose the ability to manually apply trailer brakes in an emergency and/or to control trailer sway. This is a significant safety issue. I also find it difficult to adjust the settings so that braking is smooth and firm; it tends to be "grabby" instead.

Comments
You mentioned that you lose Bluetooth connectivity while traveling, I know that while the Echo is in use it is important to make sure that no other device is connected. The range of of the Echo is 50 feet with no other obstructions. The connection may be limited by the Bluetooth signal of your phone. I assume that your phone has the correct OS requirements however I wanted to confirm that if you have an Apple phone then the IOS should be 5.0 or higher. If you have a newer Android phone it should be 4.3 or higher.

I used the wiring harness and 7/4 pin receiver from etrailer to wire my 2021 Toyota Highlander to use the Curt Echo. It worked flawlessly the first time. So far I haven’t needed to make adjustments from the original settings for my R-Pod 180 travel trailer. I do wish there were better instructions for initial set up.

Volvo XC90

Has worked great overall! I am using it with a Jayco Baja 183RB, towed by a Volvo XC90 V8 with the OEM Volvo towing package. I initially had issues with the brakes locking on instead of being triggered by pressing the brake pedal. This turned out to be caused by the XC90's trailer controller, the LED lights on the trailer didn't have enough resistance to let the car know it had a trailer attached. Adding the Kurt 57003 fixed the issue, and I've had no issues since!

by:

This controller works great. Rubber strap doesn't hold very well. I just replaced it with a velcro strap. S imple solution. Etrailer was great answering my questions and getting my order shipped quickly.

2020 Ford Escape

We purchased a new Hyundai Palisade that had an OEM hitch and “prewiring” for trailering. Unfortunately this prewiring was only a 4-pin connector so it did not include wiring for controlling electric trailer brakes. We finally convinced the dealer to install a 7-pin connector - if we obtained the appropriate parts from etrailer.com. George J. at etrailer.com recommended this kit (#ETBC7) as the parts we needed for conversion to a 7-pin connector. The car dealer’s service department installed the 7-pin connector while we waited for 5 hours. With a wireless brake controller, everything now works properly for towing our Casita.

This photo shows the installation after I modified it so that the connector was above the hitch instead of below it (too close to the ground). I had to fashion a bracket for appropriate spacing and I left several bolts that attach it to the etrailer.com bracket (oops).

by:

Very easy to install and use. With an Android phone setup I positioned the phone in a cup holder cradle so the brake button was handy. Each time the vehicle brakes are applied the phone display indicated that the controller was applying trailer brakes. I am very happy I chose this controller.

by:

This controller works great with my 32’ super c motor home.

by:

Avoid buying this brake controller and stick with the wired type. The controller worked well briefly but I soon started having issues with it locking up the brakes. I tried adjusting it and repairing it to Bluetooth but the issue was not resolved. I attempted to reach out to the manufacturer but they never provided a response. This is a horrible product.

When it comes to your Curt Echo # C51180
Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional
$269.95
locking up your trailer brakes you will first need to completely unplug the Echo from both the trailer and the truck, the app from your phone, and then reinstall the app back onto the phone. Finally plug the Echo into the vehicles 7 way by itself until the Echo has a solid blue light. This will completely reset your settings and you can re-pair your Echo.

Started out ok by 4th time towing trailer brakes would lock up whenever touch the brakes. It is not a problem with settings tried adjusting while drive no change. After uninstalling and reinstalling app and trying everything I could think of it kept happening. Brand new trailer by the way. I checked the connection terminal no corrosion. decided to close the terminal a bit more to make a tighter connection. The one time I hauled my trailer after doing that it seemed ok Ill know more next time I haul. I tow about every other week in the summer. I am this close to buying a hardwired kit. 1 more lock up of the trailer brakes and im throwing this out NOT Safe.

Comments
You mentioned that you were trying to use it again and would see if the brakes locked up. I wanted to see if it is working correctly for you now?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 06/27/2022
I have not used it yet. I only use my trailer on some weekends. Maybe this weekend i will use my trailer. Thankyou for looking into this It is very frustrating when it doesnt work right.

I purchased this brake controller because I tow trailers with more than one vehicle. It has performed well for me. I was worried at purchase that it might lose the bluetooth connection since it was not wired, but that never has occurred. It's worked quite well and I'm very happy with it.

Comments
The brake controller continues to work well and meet my towing needs.

by:

This product works extremely well especially if you tow with multiple vehicles. It should be made clear, the controller communicates with the trailer by hard connection, the wireless function is the input from users phone to the controller. I believe people think the wireless function could be problematic if the connection was lost.

by:

Overall thoughts can be summed up as, “Not overly wowed for the price.” For 1, the rubber strap was extremely cheap and broke the 1st use. This is an issue because the controller itself fits fairly loosely in ALL my receivers which is another issue as well. All 3 receivers are new and all 3 are name brands, 1 being Curt, so I can only conclude it’s the controller itself. For the price there is absolutely 0 reason Curt could not spring on a quality strap or assure a snug fit in at least their own receivers. If I had not been paranoid of it falling out to begin with and added extra bungies I would have lost $xxx controller 1/2 way to the destination. 2nd because it fits loosely it can lose connection periodically when going over a bump, sharp turn, and etc. You know those times when you might want to actually have a manual control? 3rd the manual override brake is finicky at best. It may or may not engage when hit the 1st time. It may or may not engage quickly. It may or may not engage at all. Lastly the blue tooth signal could be stronger. If not moving it does okay in the front seat of the burb but if I’m walking around the trailer or ect it loses the signal, which for me isn’t much of an issue but would certainly be if I was using in an RV since it will lose signal at around the 12ft mark. All in all I doubt I would repurchase it for the current price, vs going through the hassle of wiring in a designated controller to whichever vehicle I plan on towing it with. Couple that with the fact you MUST remove at every stop due to the design, or risk someone who actually knows what it is walking off with your $xxx controller. This is also something that could have been addressed rather cheaply for the price of the controller by something as simple as a metal loop and wire setup, but I was aware of this issue before purchase. The concept is nice, and it does broaden the options on who I could let tow my trailer if I needed to borrow a vehicle or etc if mine went down on the side of the road, and not everyone has the know how to wire their own controller so price could be negligible for them. Time will tell if it pays itself off for us, curt warranties it for life so it may very well pay itself off in time, but in my mind for most folks there are better and cheaper options. All I can say is do your research and weigh the cons and pros before you buy. Seems like a slightly below average functioning controller at the cost of considerably easier to install with multi vehicle use. Works okay for me, but I'm hauling a camper used a few times a year. I certainly wouldn't want to be someone who hauls regularly and constantly be connecting and disconnecting at all my stops. So as I said, it’s not junk but its also not the “wow” I expected from the reviews I read and price I paid.

Fantastic / effortless! I drive a Volvo XC40 and needed the most minimal, non-intrusive brake controller I could find. All you need is the corresponding app, you pair this controller to the app via bluetooth, and configure it (just 2 settings for trailer brake output & sensitivity) and you're good to go. No need to rely on the app during driving at all, the brake controller stores the settings and just does its thing without you needing to look at the app or have it open. It's handy for testing the brakes, there is a button on the app where you can virtually press the brakes, so I stand by my trailer brakes, press the button, and test that I hear them engaging - super convenient since I do setup alone. Safety features ensure that if the phone loses connection, the brake controller just keeps working. Super happy with my purchase.

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

What I recommend using is the Curt Echo # C51180. This is the best option for your Mercedes-Benz because it plugs right into the 7-Way wiring harness on your Mercedes-Benz. The best brake controller to get if you don't want something taking up space in your wife's SUV is the Curt Echo, part # C51180. I've linked a video for you to take a look at as well.

The beautiful thing about the Curt Echo # C51180 is that you can easily swap tow vehicles without having to pair it each and every time. • Compatibility of Curt Echo Brake Controller on Vehicle Equipped with OEM Brake Controller
The Curt # C51180 will work just fine with a vehicle that is equipped with an OEM or aftermarket brake controller. The Echo will not receive any output from the existing controller, as the Echo doesn't have a pin to receive any output from the controller. The existing controller will not even know a trailer is connected. You will need to make sure that the 12-volt auxiliary power feed to the 7-way is functional. I've linked you to a video that will walk you through how the Echo works.

  • Using Curt Echo Mobile on 2016 Ram 1500 Instead of Factory Integrated Brake Controller
The Curt Echo can be used on vehicles with a factory installed 7 way and brake controller, like your 2016 Ram 1500 and you don't need to disconnect anything. I spoke with my contact at Curt and they mentioned that the Curt Echo Mobile # C51180 will take priority away from the factory controller and is not affected by the signal from the blue brake wire. You won't need to disconnect anything, but it still wouldn't hurt anything if you did if you need that peace of mind.
