Determining Your Load Capacity

A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.

The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.

In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.

Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.

Determining Your Rolling Load Capacity

drawing

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Video Transcript for Review of Dutton-Lainson Electric Winch - AC Winch - DL24975

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Dutton-Lainson AC powered StrongArm Electric Winch, has a 1,200 pound load capacity. Now, this winch is a nice compact size for use in tight spaces, and this electric winch is perfect for indoor or fixed applications. Wanna zoom in up close here, so we can talk about some features. This winch will work anywhere you can access AC power, and includes a nice 3-position switch right here, which right now in the middle, it's in the off position. If you push it this way, it'll be in, and if you push it down and it will be out, so the cable go in, cable go out, and when it's in the middle, it's in the off position.

And it has this spring-loaded clutch lever right here, this spring-loaded clutch lever is for releasing your load without the power, provides a nice, smooth load control from the locked or the freewheel position. Right now, with the points pointing this way, right up here, you'll see it says freewheel, so it's in the freewheel position. And once it's in the freewheel position, that means you can pull out as much cable as you need, and then if you flip it, it'll go into the engage gear or locked position, and then the cable won't be able to move, you'll have to use the power to move it. And if you noticed, what's nice is when it's in the freewheel position, when you go to remove it, you can see it's spring-loaded, it'll automatically pop into the locked position when it's released. It does use a mechanical friction brake.

This is 120 volt AC operation, you can see it includes this 10 foot long three-wire grounded power cord. Now, the cable on this, if we pull some of the cable out just to show you it's a high strength 7 strand 19 gauge galvanized aircraft cable. On the end of it, you can see here is this nice safety hook with the keeper on it that allows you to when you hook it on to wherever you're hooking it to, that keeper will keep it from coming detached. The cable dimension is a 3/16 diameter by 20 foot long cable. Now, if you want, you can remove the wire cable and swap it out for a two inch wide strap also.

Now, it also comes, you can see here, with this nice emergency crank handle that is included, and you would use this on event of a power failure. So if you lose power and you still needed to crank your winch, what you'll do is go onto this side, pop out this little plug right here, and that'll allow you to line up your crank handle, just like that, and then you're able to crank your winch whichever way you need to go. And then once your power comes back on, just remove your handle, put your plug back in there, and you're ready to go. They do use heat-treated gears on the inside, provide a nice, smoother, quieter ride, greater strength. The gear ratio on this winch is 189 to 1.

They also use precision needle bearings in the high-load areas, which will creating low friction, promote longer life. The base on this, I'll just turn it a little bit, so you can see the very bottom here. This is a die-form base, which can be adapted for quick mounting applications, and the case on it is a nice high impact weather resistant case, provides excellent protection for any of the internal components. It is a lot safer than the open-reel models. If you noticed on the front right here, there's a nice brushed stainless steel front plate for superior rust resistance. Now, this part is made in the USA, it is CSA and OSHA certified. Few specs on this, the load capacity, again, we mentioned is 1,200 pounds, and that capacity is based on third layer of cable on the drum and a continuous 10 foot pole. The current draw on this is six amps at 120 volts. Now, electric winches should be used intermittently, because the maximum continuous run time should be only about four minutes on electric winch. The load speed on this, the feet per minute, if it's a no load full reel, 35 feet per minute, a full load full reel, 16 feet per minute. Last thing I wanna do is just give you some dimensions on this to let you know the size of it. We're gonna zoom back in. And if we do the length from the very back here to the very front, you can see if I put my tape measure on it, that's gonna be right at about 11 inches. Total length, the width on it. Now, when I do the width, I am gonna do all the way with this handle, measuring including that handle, so you're gonna be right at about eight inches wide, and as I mentioned, it includes that handle. And the last portion, we're gonna measure the height, and the height, if turn this right here, you can see the tallest point is gonna be right here at the very back. So if we go right there, you're gonna see right about eight inches tall. But that should do it for the review on the Dutton-Lainson AC powered StrongArm Electric Winch with a 1,200 pound load capacity..

Review from a similar StrongArm in Electric Winch

The trailer winch is a huge help in allowing me to load my boat onto my trailer, especially this year (summer 2022) with water levels in most Minnesota lakes very low. The low water levels prevents the boat from floating up on the trailer in many cases - Muscle is required to pull the boat onto the trailer. This electric winch provides the muscle and saves my 65 year old body from the task.

I power the winch with a 12 volt jump starter and I've used it approximately 60 times thus far without problem. I keep the jump starter in the back of my SUV and then hook it up when I'm ready to load my boat on the trailer. This saves the trouble of wiring the car for the winch and it works perfectly.

Why 3 stars? Because the wiring at the connection from the remote cable to the winch was poorly done and failed within 1/2 year. I had to redo the 3 connections at the end of the remote cable and the 3 connections going into the winch. Very poor job by Dutton-Lainson connecting the wires to the connectors - Inexcusable for a $500 item.

I had a couple questions while installing the winch and etrailer was very helpful in answering those questions. This is why I buy from etrailer and not elsewhere. They both charge a similar price and the technical support that etrailer provides makes it a no brainer - I will always buy from etrailer.

Put this winch on my Ranger 620 boat trailer a year ago and love it! Haven't had a single problem and it helps trailering when I fish alone. I ran power and ground from my truck battery to a back bumper plug, and have a separate removable cable (shown in pic) to connect truck plug to the winch plug. Grounding to the truck didn't work for me. I have another spare cable and plug rolled up and attached to my trolling motor battery for when my buddies drive. Winch prevents power loading and drawing sand into the motor. DL24055 adapter plate was needed and I put a coupler lock up through the middle of the winch to prevent theft and I bought a cover (shown in pic) to keep the rain out. etrailer sales and support are absolutely fabulous! They helped me figure all this out.

Review from a similar StrongArm in Electric Winch

I purchased this winch to replace a Fulton K2550 manual winch on my ham radio tower. My tower is 54 ft tall when extended and 21 ft when retracted. It takes about 170 turns of the winch to raise/lower the tower. I removed the hand winch and placed the D-L SA9010AC winch in the existing mounting holes. I like this winch since it comes with a stainless hub since it will be used outside. This winch has a 2700 lb load rating. I am lifting around 700 lbs. This winch comes with no cable or freewheeling clutch. I reused the 1/4" stainless cable on the winch. I raised the tower and it took 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Lowering took 2 minutes. Well within the maximun run time of 3 minutes. The cable length winched was 17 ft. I have raised and lowered the tower several times to work on the antenna's and it worked properly every time. Attached are several pictures of the installation. I already recommended this winch to another ham operator.

Comments
I too am considering this winch. I have a US towers 455, about the same height you reference, that came with a Fulton 1550 and I have upgraded to a 2550 and then a 3000. But still takes too much effort. So my question is: are you still happy with this winch? How long have you had it? Any issues at all? Thanks,
-- comment by: Fred S - 07/30/2014
Hi Fred,Yes, I am still happy with the winch. It has been on a couple months so far. Only comment I forgot was, the optional cover for the winch is very snug when you have to keep the remote and gfi plug covered. I think I will be making a separate waterproof cover for those two parts so the winch cover will fit better
-- comment by: Joer S - 08/01/2014
Actually, I have become dissatisfied with the Fulton 3000. I tried attaching a Hawg drill like so many have suggested. It worked the first summer, but after a winter exposure, the drill tore it up this spring. I have spent the last few weeks investigating motorized winches and finally ordered the Stong Arm Dutton-Liason. It looks very much like a 2550 with a cover and ac motor and is stainless mostly. It hasnt come yet so I will let you know next year how it is doing.

I am a 77 year old man and having to hand winch my small sailboat up on a shore ramp that I have. It was getting to be a bit much, so I decided to look into a 12volt winch. The Dl25200 fit the bill, works great. I have a 12volt battery next to it and a 10 , watt solar charger to keep the battery up, I hope. Time will tell. The service at etrailer was great, good price and fast shipping. Thanks

I installed this winch as a replacement for the standard winch on my Magic Tilt trailer for my 21ft. SeaFox. I replaced the winch so that my wife would not have to hand crank when helping me load the boat. I only wish I'd done it sooner! It works like a charm, the install was simple and it has held up well. I keep the winch covered with a tarp to keep the rain off of it and I'm sure that has helped. The SeaFox weighs about 3000# plus the weight of the motor, fuel and whatever other junk we've got onboard. If you are looking for a good electric winch to make your life easier, I recommend this one.

After a year of use, we are still very pleased with our purchase and would still recommend this winch.

I just used it for the second time on my 19 ft Lund boat works great! Could not believe it bolted to the same bolt holes of easy load trailer crank wrench.

Works great. I use it on a 19 foot Lund Impact and a roller trailer without a problem. I recommend this product.

Comments
Great on a boat trailer. Makes loading a breeze. A wireless remote would make this winch even better. Currently in use with a 19 foot Lund boat on a Shorelander roller trailer.

To whom it may concern,

The power
cable that came with the winch is 4' short. It was mounted on the front of a boat trailer and I have a full size pick up.

Review from a similar StrongArm in Electric Winch

I had to grind a little bit off the gussets on the mounting plate on my Tracker trailer to mount the winch but the bolt pattern was perfect. The electric cable that was provided with the winch wasn't quite long enough for my 4 door F150 so I used my wife's Explorer with the cable provided and got a longer cable and fuse for my pickup and then put a plug at the rear of both vehicles and a plug to the winch so I can use either vehicle. The winch pulled our 16'Tracker boat up on the trailer easily and I discovered you had tighten the gear locking mechanism quite snug or it would slip. I noticed the pulling belt on the winch is not quite as heavy as the one on my hand winch and I plan on swapping it out. Other than that, I am happy with my purchase.

I installed this on my Bavaria sailboat to lift the aft bathing platform up and down. A little bit slower and louder than the original system but this has the manual override which is invaluable if/when there is an electrical problem. Their customer service was outstanding.

I ordered 2 of these for my double wave runner boat lift. I waited to review until I had used them for a while. They have been in use for over a month and are just fantastic. They are plenty powerful enough to raise an 850 lb boat and does it very quickly...45 seconds. And that's on an extremely high "heavy water lift" as I live on a Great Lake. Both are hooked to one battery and one charger and even with a busy weekend of guests riding on and off all day they do not even slow, meaning they are not over draining the battery. 2 of my neighbors want in on this success and are now ordering. Well built and looks like they will last a long time. One neighbor has one that is over 10 years old.

Review from a similar StrongArm in Electric Winch

It pulls my boat onto the trailer with ease and it always worked. The big thing for me is how long will it last. If it works as well in 5 or 10 years I'll give it five stars.
