When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

EZ-Latch Coupler

Cast Coupler Cutaway

This coupler features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic. Disengaging the coupler is just as effortless. Simply lift up the handle and the coupler socket will automatically release its grip on the ball.

Demco EZ-Latch in Use

The contoured, low-profile design of the latch handle helps protect the coupler from damage by allowing any potential hazards - from debris on the road to your ball mount backing into the coupler - to simply slide over the top. This helps prevent anything from getting under the latch handle and releasing the ball, and it can also limit any damage to the coupler should an impact occur

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 120-hour salt spray rating. In addition, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability.

The videos really helped convince me the Demco was the one to buy. Came on time. Is exactly what I expected. Nice hitch. MUCH better design than the old actuator hitch, which had become disfunctional.

Excellent replacement for my 2008 EZ Loader trailer

by:

I guess I didn’t read enough, I wanted an actuator that did both drum and disc. Now just ordered a disc brake kit which is what I wanted just not now, but I know I’m better off that it’ll be done all at once.

by:

It was delivered very quickly and on my doorstep. I bought this to put on a Tow Dolly I purchased to pull my car behind my motorhome. The surge brake will make it much safer going through the mountains on my way south. I also feel the price was great.

by:

Excellent quality. I had to drill an extra hole for mounting, no problem. No manual for bleeding or parts breakdown was included so I downloaded the manual from Demco website.

by:

Easy to install works great fast shipping thanks!

by:

Excellent support from Nicole in helping me confirm availability of all my material needs for my boat trailer brake upgrade from Drum to Disk. Have not actually done the install but parts arrived a day early and look to be high quality. This actuator is a perfect fit to replace my old drum brake surge actuator. Thanks Nicole!!

by:

SO far so good the unit showed up very quickly and I like the self locking unit. It should have keeper pin included with it other than that I like the design.

by:

Great service and fast delivery

by:

Excellent service as usual. The part was on backorder just like everything else. They were in constantly in contact keeping me updated. Hopefully I'll get to install it after the holiday.

by:

Very polite fast shipment

by:

This actuator has great features at an exceptional price. Also, it's proudly made in the USA!

  • Picking Out Brakes for 2003 Mastercraft Maristar 210 Boat Trailer
I am sure we have a suitable replacement surge actuator for your trailer. But when I tried to look up your trailer on google every one of the pictures had the coupler cut off. If you could send me a picture of your coupler as well as the weight of your trailer when loaded I can give you our best recommendation. Do you need brake assemblies as well? That's the part that fits behind the hub/drum.

  • Can a Surge Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes Be Compatible with Disc Brakes?
Most brake actuators for drum brakes like your Dico 6000 lb cannot be used for disc brakes. This isn't based on weight capacity, but rather based on the pressure the master cylinder can handle. Most drum brake systems give you 1000 to 1200 psi, and disc brake systems require more with most rated at 1600 psi. The actuators are specific for disc or drum because drum brakes with a disc brake actuator would give too much pressure and in your case, the drum brake actuator will not give enough...

  • Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 85778
The replacement I recommend for an Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 85778 is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR. It has the same ball size, offers a bolt-on install, and has a greater capacity. The only difference is it has an electric lockout as opposed to a manual one.

  • Troubleshooting Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR
I spoke to my contact at Demco and he told that the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR should not slam forward when you slow down. He said this brake actuator is inertia based, meaning as you start to apply the brakes it will begin to slowly activate your trailer's brakes. It should not be where the brake actuator slams forward as you say. There are a couple of things he said that could be causing the problem. The first thing he said could be the issue are the bolts that hold the...

  • What Hardware Is Needed for Installing Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM62VR
The correct hardware to use to install the Demco surge actuator part # DM62VR is 1/2" x 4-1/2" Grade-5 bolts which we don't offer. This would be super easy to track down at a local hardware store though.

  • Solution for Converting Trailer with Atwood Drum Brake Surge Actuator to Disc
Some people have had luck punching out or removing the check valve in their drum brake actuator master cylinders to allow them to be used with the higher PSI requirements of disc brakes but the manufacturers of the actuators will not endorse this so we can't either. If Atwood replacement parts were still available the easiest solution would be to replace the master cylinder with the correct disc brake master cylinder. Since that's not possible the best solution would be an all new actuator...

  • Replacement Disc Brake Surge Coupler for 2004 Nitro Boat Trailer
We can help you with a new surge brake coupler for your straight-tongue boat trailer. Your photo shows a label indicating the old coupler is designed for disc brakes which will use a coupler with higher pressure than a coupler for drum brakes. For a 7K disc brake coupler you can use Demco part # DM62VR which includes an electric lockout feature. It fits a 3-inch wide channel tongue and uses 1/2 x 4-1/2 Grade-5 bolts for mounting.

  • What is the Correct Amount of Brake Fluid for the Demco Disc Brake Actuator # DM62VR
According to Demco, you will want to fill the brake fluid reservoir 3/4 of the way full with new DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. If you are bleeding the brakes, you will want to check the brake fluid level to ensure that it remains above half full during the bleeding process. Once you have finished bleeding the brakes, you can fill it to 3/4 full.

This actuator fits a 3 inch wide channel, and has a maximum weight capacity of 7,000 lbs. The coupler is compatible with 1-7/8, 2 inch of 50mm trailer balls. This actuator will supply the higher psi needed to actuate your new disc brakes properly.

  • Is There any Adjustability with Trailer Surge Brakes
Surge brakes do not have any adjustability. If you want to use them on steep hills your solutions would be best. Or you can look into an electric over hydraulic setup which will allow you to use a brake controller to activate the brakes. This gives you total flexibility and control. I attached a help article to this page that would walk you through the entire process of adding EOH brakes to a trailer like yours.

  • Recommended Replacement Surge Brake Actuator for Karavan Boat Trailer
I was able to do a little bit of research and it looks like the Karavan trailer you're referring to had a 7000-lbs surge actuator. To replace that I recommend using the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM62VR, which will bolt onto a 3" wide channel tongue and gives you a durable zinc-plating that's going to stand up to rust and corrosion really well. • Disc Brake Compatible Replacement for Tie Down Model 660 Surge Brake Actuator
In regards to surge brakes, disc brakes require a much higher psi than drum brakes for proper operation therefore the two types of brake actuators (disc/drum) are not cross-compatible. The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR would be a great disc brake compatible replacement for a Tie Down Model 660. It has an electric lockout which you can use to prevent the brakes from locking up while in reverse but it does not have to be hooked up.

  • Weight of Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuating Coupler
Minus the packaging, the Demco # DM62VR Hydraulic Brake Actuating Coupler weighs about 18 lbs. The coupler is compatible with trailers weighing up to 7000 lbs with disc brakes. The coupler fits a 2 inch trailer ball, and is equipped with an electric lockout solenoid that will prevent the brakes from engaging when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse, assuming that the coupler is installed correctly and the center pin of the 7-way on the tow vehicle is tied into the reverse lamp circuit. • Actuator/Coupler Replacement for 85841 on Sea Ray Boat Trailer
Since your trailer has disc brake it will be very important that you pick out a actuator/coupler that is rated for that and not drum brakes as that is a lower pressure rating that won't work well. The 85841 is no longer made so it would be tough to find so I would recommend going with a new coupler setup like the # DM62VR which you could bolt onto your frame once you cut off the older welded on model. If you wanted to weld this in place of what you have you certainly could do that as well.

  • Correct Replacement for Disc Brake Demco DA66B Actuator
The correct replacement for a Demco DA66B Actuator is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR. This will be a direct bolt-on replacement for the existing model, no drilling required. It uses a three hole pattern but the two holes will match the ones you have now and you can choose to drill the third lower hole or just use the top two. There are only two required. The brake line fittings will be the same.

When bleeding the brakes on your trailer after installing the Kodiak Calipers you will first want to start with the brake that is furthest away from the actuator. A hydraulic or surge coupler isn't adjustable for the weight of the trailer but strangely enough, they don't need to be. The brakes would certainly be more effective if there were more weight on the trailer, but conversely a lighter trailer doesn't need as much braking force as a heavier trailer would. I've spoken with my contacts at Demco and Titan, both of whom confirm this. The more inertia provided by the weight of the trailer and its load, the harder the brakes will apply, but less...
