Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Autoslide hitch is specially designed to fit in the underbed rails of your Ford Super Duty factory fifth-wheel towing prep package. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your OEM tow package receivers, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then lower the hitch into the 4 puck receivers in your truck bed. Turn the handles to lock the feet into the pucks and secure the handles with the included safety pins. The hitch can be removed to give you full truck bed access. Simply remove the safety pins, turn the handles to unlock the feet, and lift the hitch out of the receivers.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Pontiac Montana

Well built fifth wheel hitch. Haven't got a chance to tow our new Montana High Country 295RL. But I know a guy that has towed his fifth wheel with this same hitch. I'm sure this 18K hitch will be excellent! Or I wouldn't have bought it. I recommend e trailer for everything.

Item works exactly as described. I have a shortbed (6.5') Ford F350. Probably towed our 5th wheeler 5000+ miles with no problem. Then last year it happened! We were making a sharp turn in an uneven lot and POW, the 5vr hit the rear window and it exploded. After that I became gun shy about turning with the 5vr attached so I started looking at sliding hitches. A slider that you had to get out and unlatch to make work, didn't make sense to me. At what point do you get out? So, an auto slider hitch was purchased. Now when I get to a certain degree turn the auto-slide hitch moves back in its carriage and then auto-slides to the normal location once straightened out. Not gun shy anymore.

Well packaged
Well made
Easy install

Very heavy
Some clunking after it straightens out from a turn

The hitch still works as described. Have not broken another rear window since installing it. I have learned that when unhooking from 5vr I have to take a pry bar to straighten out the hitch back to straight for rehooking. The only thing I do not like is the serious clunking that seems to occur when making some turns, then accelerating and the hitch straitening out. Thats the only real complaint I have. Since installation of the Demco I do not worry about making sharp turns!

I have a 2017 Ford F-250 (Crew Cab, short box), and a 40’ 14,000lb 5th wheel. I’ve owned this Demco Autoslide for 1 year, and I absolutely love it. I purchased a 5th wheel for the maneuverability, but my expectations were blown away with this Autoslide. I also have the Extang Xceed hard tonneau cover, and when folded up (laying flat on the panel closest to the cab) I can maneuver however I want without removing the tonneau. If im going to make a really sharp turn on uneven ground I’ll stop and flip my tonneau all the way up, but very rarely do I have to do that. Also removal & install of this hitch is about as easy as removing & installing a 5th wheel hitch can possibly be. I use a rope, pulley, & my side by side. Highly recommend this Demco hitch.

Very happy with my Demco Autoslide hitch after one year. We pull a Montana 3120 35 ft 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F-350 short bed. Took a month long 6,000 mile trip from Colorado to New England/Canada this Summer. Lots of hilly/curvy roads and some remote campgrounds with tight corners and some near 80 degree back ins. Never came close to trailer contacting the truck. I’ve had no jerking or other issues when turning or stoping/starting. Works great. The only drawback is there isn’t much room for error when you back up to hook up the trailer, so it takes a little practice to get used to correctly lining up your Demco Hitch to the trailer. The first couple of trips, it took me 3 or 4 attempts to properly line it up. No longer an issue for me after a few trips and you get used to the angles. It weighs about 300 pounds. I got a small chain hoist which I installed in my garage rafters and easily lift the hitch in and out of my truck and just let it hang front he rafters until I need to use it.

One thing to consider - there are a lot of small springs and levers working inside the hitch head to work the king pin jaws. While this 5th wheel hitch is certainly robust and designed to take a beating from your 5th wheel when towing, it wasnt designed to support its own weight for extended periods of time.

Now been two years and have about 15,000 miles on my Demco Autoslide Hitch. Still works terrific with my 35 ft Montana on the F350 truck. Never a problem traveling or hitching up.
John T - 09/23/2020

The Demco Auto slide takes the worry out of towing my fifth wheel trailer with a short bed F-350. I have had no problems with backing into tight camping spots. And since everything is automatic I have one less thing to worry about while traveling with a fifth wheel.
The only problem is that it is a little on the heavy side, so I just leave it in the truck when not towing. Problem solved.
I am extremely happy with the product.

For anyone else wondering how to use a MOR/ryde pin box with their Demco Hijacker Autoslide, you can use the Locking Plate # DM6025
Demco Autoslide Locking Plate for MOR/ryde Pin Boxes
-- Etrailer Expert Victoria B - 10/07/2019
After over a year of towing with the Demco Auto slide I am very happy with its performance. Never a worry about tight turns with a short bed truck.
Raymond F - 09/27/2020

Still love this hitch.
Very heavy duty.
Extreme confidence in this unit. Hitching is a bit difficult sometimes but worth it. Need to be close to straight on and height is important. I'm confident that the jaws are locked and I'm confident that camper will not hit cab when turning. I can go 90 degrees without a worry. A couple of embarrassing moments a couple of times when hitching but I'll never see those people again. Compared to other hitches I've seen, this is one heavy duty [piece] and I'm glad I bought it.

Still love this hitch. Hitching is now seamless. Practice makes perfect.
Neil - 07/13/2022

This product is great for short-bed trucks since it takes the work of sliding the hitch back when backing or cutting a sharp corner. It is a bit clunky in its operation. When you pull forward straight there is no issue, but if you are at a corner and begin to pull with the truck at an angle, there is a resounding clunk as the hitch takes hold. I tried adjusting the forward stop and the capture bars and nothing helps. In order to avoid this clunk, like something lose in the hitch, I pull straight then begin my turn and there isn't the resounding clunk. I am using the Demco capture bars DM6171

After almost two-year of use, Im glad that I chose the Demco Auto Slider. The clunk is still there and I just got used to driving with the clunk and jerk, but its still better than having to get out of the truck to unlock the slider when backing or making severe turns. This is a set-it and forget-it operation. As it turns out, my trailer is designed with a forward setting king pin, so I probably didnt need a Demco, but thats not how all trailers are designed.

2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty

2014 Pontiac Montana

Why I chose the Demco Hijacker? I wanted a fifth wheel hitch not a gooseneck. I also wanted something heavy duty and solid because my fiver is good size and i’m not taking chances on something light and convenient over safety. I wanted all the benefits of a fifth wheel hitch that reduces sway, tows stable and smooth. Obviously I also wanted a hitch that would eliminate the chances of contacting my truck cab. THIS HITCH FITS PERFECTLY IN MY 2021 F350 platinum standard bed. I tow a 2021 montana high country 14,600 GVWR. I assembled the hitch myself and have adjusted the height twice. The system I set up to install the hitch makes it a 10 minute job and can do it by myself. I installed an overhead electric hoist in my garage. I lift it with heavy duty lifting straps so it is balanced and I drive right under and drop it in. When I want to service the hitch I drop it on an offroad garden cart which gets it off the ground enough to adjust height, access the underside and any other points for service and lubrication. I wanted a heavy duty solid fifth wheel hitch and this baby fits the bill. I had enough payload to spare so wasn’t concerned about weight. It weighs 275lbs, I also use a thin lube plate on my pin box which is a trailair road armor by lippert. Ive been towing for 14 years all over the country. Although many will argue you don't need a slider on a standard or short bed with a modern fifth wheel I also know from experience that situations happen that are out of your control such as an awkward or steep, rv park entrance or exit, other drivers, going in and out of parking lots and gas stations, or trying to maneuver in traffic. Things can happen fast, would you rather blow out an 80,000 truck window and dent up your truck or just get a hitch that eliminates that risk all together. This hitch is SOLID, and performs perfectly. Its quiet when making turns, it operates extremely smooth, virtually no chucking, the jaws are awesome how they lock around the pin. Hitching up is super easy and smooth once you get it dialed. You do have to be pretty straight on but after a few times its easy! Set the guide rails on the hitch to 1/8” wider than your pin box on either side and never touch them again. I did add grease to the handle mechanism as well as the gear underneath and other components in the jaw. Get the Lube plate from etrailer that is thin enough for this hitch, makes it buttery smooth hitching and unhitching. “Tip” with the lube plate. Use some grease on the underside that sticks it to the bottom of your pin box.

Absolutely love thus hitch. No slack in the hitch at all pulls great and no more worries about hitting my cab. Great hitch!

Love it Installation video who is a great help rides beautifully

Works very well. So much easier than getting out and manually sliding the fifth wheel hitch back.

2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty

This is a great system. The purchase and delivery were easy and it required some assembly, mostly specific to mounting and adjusting the hitch height.

Duane - 12/04/2021

We have had it for one season now. I am very happy with it. I have it in a 2020 F350 crew cab short box. Our new Grand Design 311BH has a cap that's "short bed friendly". But I still didn't want to chance it. In our driveway I have to make a jack knife turn with the trailer going down a slight decline. With out the Hijacker, I would have blown out my back window for sure.

It still comes very close to my bed side, but that's all because of my situation. In normal driving conditions and fairly flat RV parks this thing shines! I Did have to modify my Peragon bed cover rails for getting it in my driveway. But it was worth it. I am new to 5th wheels but towing. And this hitch takes a lot of stress out of backing up and turning tight corners.

I did lower the rear of my truck about 1 1/2" and lowered the pin box a little over an inch as well. This gave me more room between the bed and 5th wheel. As well as keeping the rig level going down the road. I have the hijacker in the middle height adjustment and my cover slides right over the top of it with a little room to spare. I also run airbags to keep everything level.

I heard about troubles backing into the hitch when the side bars are set. I have not had any troubles lining up to back in. The head does move a little so you don't need to be perfect. I originally planned on loosening the side bars up and tightening them every time. But I forgot once pulling out of the driveway and the pin box hopped the side bars. Scared the crap out of me. After that I never loosen them up. I leave it set snug to the pin box. Since then it's been smooth sailing.

Another thing to mention is, this hitch is heavy. It is a 2 person job or with some mechanical assistance. I did get it in the truck and out a couple times by myself (5'9" 150lb), but I opted for my tractor with fork extensions. This worked, but is hard to line up the pucks. So I put a hoist on a trolley in my garage. This is great for lining it up. I marked my floor for my back tire then the trolley lets you drop it right where it needs to go. I also saved the pallet the hitch came on, and added casters. Now when I hoist it out of the truck, I drop it on the pallet and wheel it to it's spot.

I hope this helps anyone looking at it. If you are going back and forth between manual slide and an auto slide. Think of when you will need it. When your turning off a busy road in a tight fuel station or similar situation. You don't want to get out and screw around with your manual slider. OR if you forget your slider and blow out your back window. Not only is your trip ruined, but now it's a deductible on your insurance to have it fixed ( if it hits the cab not just the window). I looked at both styles and the extra money up front was worth not ruining my truck. And not finding myself in a stressful situation. I would but this hitch over and over again. It's built like heavy duty farm equipment. You will not be disappointed!

Works good just need to pull out straight. As you can’t straighten it out once you get unhooked. As far as delivery they sent it to California then back before I could receive it from e-trailer. I live in Idaho. So had to wait on them to ship it to me before I could go on my trip.

2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty

This product works as it claims. I can make a full 90 degree turn with my Ford F-250 6.5’ bed and 2018 33’ Reflection by Grand Design. I’m a very happy Camper.

Heavy Duty hitch! Easy to install. Followed the directions and it plopped right in. I had to remove all of the shims for it to close, but no problems. Will find out next week how it operates.

Great hitch! The Demco Hijacker Autoslide provides a worry free option for shorter beds enabling sharper turns without getting out of the truck multiple times. Videos and support from etrailer were super helpful especially when the mounting brackets were the wrong ones, the good people of etrailer remedied the situation immediately. Thumbs up to customer service. I will not hesitate to recommend etrailer to any one.

After 1 year of owning the Demco Hijacker, so far, so good! At first, I wasn't so thrilled with it, it was very finicky to hitch up when new. If you weren't perfectly lined up and the truck and fifth wheel trailer wasn't level to each other(side to side), it wouldn't latch. As time has gone on, it has broken in and the problems have pretty much gone away. I use the wedge from Demco made specifically for the Turning Point pinbox, and I spray the hitch plate and the pinbox with Dry Lube.

The Hijacker works as advertised, I would recommend it.

Seems to be well-made. However, hooking up to our Kingpin has proved difficult. We have followed all of the suggestions and it still takes my husband several attempts to hook up to it and properly latch. Frustrating.

2016 Ford F-250 Super Duty

I have a 2016 F250 short bed and this is perfect. I installed the puck system under the bed(etrailer) using the dimples from the factory as guides. The 5th wheel assembly was easy to follow if you don’t get into a hurry(like me) Three height settings. Mine is set low because of the 4 wheel drive. The four pins at the corner fit into the puck system like it was made for it.(etrailer) Everything came together well and I can make a tight 90 degree turn without having to worry about damaging my stuff. That would be bad!
Just 4 cotter pins, a quarter turn of the locking levers, and with help, lift the 5th wheel out of the bed for a flat floor in your bed again. Easy Peasy.

Demco auto slide 18k is a heavy fifth wheel plate considering all the mechanics involved. About 300lbs plus the capture plate because of MorRyde system. But I really like the ride MorRyde gives me so that’s the trade off. The Demco auto slide worked without issues as did the puck system I installed. All came from etrailer and I am happy with them completely.

Loved the product and used it immediately to tow my toy hauler for 2000 miles. The unit performed perfectly as described and I couldn’t be any happier. The package was foam protected and delivered in great condition. I would highly recommend it.

2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Highly recommend excellent customer service and support quality product

Works as stated. With my 6-1/2foot box, I need the slide feature. Very easy to put in and take out of the box. Very satisfied.

2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Ok... The darn thing weighs a ton! but that was outlined in their info... Just want to make that known. It took three of us to put in the base minus the "head". That was work !! As for the unit, it does as advertised. It swivels when turning and moves aft providing plenty of cab clearance. Don't expect to do a 90 degree turn however, but for normal situations it works fine. One thing I'd love to see is an "adjustment" to move (slide) the "head" a little more rearward when connecting. I only have about 6" of clearance with the gate down so I have to be nearly perfectly aligned to make the hookup. Speaking of which, hooking up can be a challenge. The clamps must have some "slack" and not be too tight against the pin box or alignment becomes a real issue. Also, if you aren't aligned with the trailer when disconnecting you'll need to have that same "off alignment" position when reconnecting as the "head" cannot be moved at all by hand. This can make for having to loosen the clamps, make the hook up, straighten the truck with the trailer and then have to re tighten the clamps. All in all, the unit is as expected and does provide movement aft and forward as you turn. Makes parking in that tight spot a bit less nerve racking...
As for Customer Support Demco is spot on!! I had a couple of set up issues. One call cleared the misunderstanding on my end and the install went fine after that. On a second call, they also explained how to set up the clamps to better help with the above mentioned issues. But the nature of the design does not allow much leeway. Enjoy!!!

The overall rating Id give is 4.5 stars!! The issues Im having have been noted in many other reviews. Its Heavy !! Noted.. Its hard to align especially if you had to be off center when you parked. Now, as noted, you must be off-center to connect or loosen the clamps, connect, re-align truck to trailer and retighten the clamps. Gets to be a pain, but necessary if your way off center. Also, it does bang a lot when moving out from a stop which tends to be a bit startling if your not ready. As for the swiveling function, its perfect!! You can really maneuver the trailer basically as needed to get into those tight spots. Just be sure to watch out for anything really close to a 90 degree turn. That it wont do, but you shouldnt be doing that anyway!! Over all, as advertised it does the job! Also, hats off to Demco Cust Service. They ae there when you need them !! And a Big Thanks to etrailer always a great place to shop and they also provide top-notch after purchase support.

It would not require any type of lifting device to take delivery. The box that holds that head will weigh right at 65 lbs. The rest weighs 239 lbs. I attached a review video of this hitch for you to check out as well.

  • How Much of Bed Liner Would Need to Get Trimmed to Install Demco Hijacker for Ford OEM Rail Kit
To ensure the Demco Hijacker Autoslide for Ford Rail Kits part # DM8550024 will fit the pucks of the factory rail kit of your 2019 Ford F-250 you'll want to cut out the perimeter of the pucks so that the hitch fits properly. If you wanted to minimize the trimming you could take the side brackets of the hitch (they ship uninstalled) and test fit them while you trim the bed liner to see exactly how much you could get away with leaving and not have it affect the fit of the hitch.

  • Demco Hijacker Vs. Pullrite Superglide In 2020 Ford F-350 Short Bed With OEM Pucks
The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider part # DM8550024 is a better option for an auto slide compared to the Pullrite SuperGlide because the Hijacker has 3 different height settings 15-1/2", 16-3/4", and 18-1/4" compared to the 18" height setting of the Pullrite. Both fifth wheel hitches have pivoting heads and can tow 18K with an auto slide feature. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch # DM8550024 that you referenced, which is a GREAT choice for your 2019 Ford F-350, features built-in capture plates on the head that are compatible with most pin boxes on the market. With that being said, I wasn't able to locate any information on the 710426 model pin box that you mentioned. Is it possible that there is another number somewhere on the unit? We do have separate capture and locking plates available for the Hijacker that are for...

  • Should Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch Head Manually Turn Without Trailer Connected?
The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider # DM8550024 should not be able to be manually turned. The movement of the hitch head side to side is only possible when the weight of the trailer is on the hitch head. The reason for this is so you will be able to connect at the same angle you disconnected from the trailer so that head won't easily move as you connect your trailer making it more difficult to align. That connection and disconnection is basically straight on.

  • Easier Ways to Adjust Height Setting of Demco Hijacker Autoslide Fifth Wheel
If your trailer is handy you could connect the hitch to your trailer in your truck bed and then use the jacks to lift the front of the trailer and the hitch once you unbolt the side plates. This would probably be the easiest way to lift the hitch relative to the side brackets. Otherwise I'd recommend taking the hitch of the truck bed and setting it on it's side and moving the plates that way.

The hitch I recommend for your 2018 Ford F-250 is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide for Ford Hitch Prep Package part # DM8550024. • Demco Auto Slide Does Not Return To The Front Or Straight.
I can understand why you kept the Demco Auto Slide # DM8550024 on your 2016 Ford F350 because it can be pretty difficult hooking up when it's at an angle. You should be able to get the head moved but it may be difficult. One possible way to fix this would be to lock the head release handle open so it's extended out, then use that to get more leverage on it. Another possible solution would be to remove the head and loosen the pivot bolt that runs vertically. This is a bit more intense of...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2018 Ford F-250 6-3/4 Foot Bed with OEM Prep Pkg
The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch part # DM8550024 is my recommendation for a 2018 Ford F-250 (6-3/4 Foot Bed with OEM Prep Pkg). The main feature that sets this hitch apart from the rest is the auto-slide mechanism which moves the hitch head back when making tight turn. Therefore, there is no getting in and out of the truck each time you need to make a sharp turn which is really a game changer for short bed trucks. Aside from this, it's a quality well made option which nice...

  • Is Truck Bed Capacity Same as Pin Weight Capacity for Fifth Wheel Trailer
Truck bed weight capacity and pin weight capacity will be different figures. Reason being that the fifth wheel rails attach directly to the truck bed frame and the truck bed capacity is the capacity of the sheet metal that the truck bed is made of. This is why the capacities are not the same and the pin weight capacity will be higher. • How the Sliding Mechanism on the Demco Hijacker Works
The action of the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch part # DM8550024 is very smooth. It uses a rack and pinion operation to move the hitch head which has a mechanical gear that will do its job no matter the terrain you are on. The only issue with uneven terrain is the uncoupling and coupling procedures which will need to be done when the trailer is no more than 15 degrees from the tow vehicle. I have attached a review and install video of the hitch for you as well.
