Video Transcript for Deka Primary Wire Heat Shrinkable Tubing Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Deka's Shrinkable Tubing. These are available in either red or black and gauges between 2-8, 8-12, 10-14, or 14-18. You'll want to use heat shrink to cover up any exposed surfaces, especially on power circuits. We've got some here covering up the ends of our ring terminals where we've crimped it onto our battery wires. We also used it here where we connected two wires together using a non-insulated crimp. And you can see we've used it again here on a larger gauges.

You want to make sure that you use the appropriate size for the gauge wire you are working with. It's a shrinkable EDA tubing that is slightly larger than the gauge you're working with when you're using that appropriate size. You slide it over the wire before making your connection. Once you've made your connection you slide the shrink tubing back over the exposed wire and apply a heat source. I recommend using a heat gun. If you need a heat gun you can pick on up here at etrailer.com.

You can see here as the heat source is applied to it the tubing shrinks tightly over our exposed wiring keeping out any moisture and corrosion that may occur. And that completes our look at Deka's Shrinkable Tubing.

The only product that I was able to find that covered 14 - 10 gauge wire so I could cover the splices in the brake wire from one side to the other

Did the trick.

I am glad I came upon this site. The staff is friendly courteous and helpful. Since I live in Canada it is a big problem if I had to send items back across the border to etrailer if the items were not what I thought they were. The short videos that etrailer provides with each product is extremely helpful in determining to purchase or not. Thank you for that feature. Knowing a little about video production and the costs associated with that, it must cost etrailer a pile to give us (the consumers) what appears to be a simple addition on their site Thanks again guys/gals

Excellent for all. Parts are great quality. Everything was shipped hassle free and quickly. The help videos are over the top. The only complaint I might have is that that marine grease sticks to everything (LOL). I really wish all internet sales services were as good. Thank You

These heat shrink sleeves worked as expected. Heat gun gave a better final appearance than using a propane torch.

You had everything I needed at great prices. Your products work very Well and each order was shipped fast and received in perfect condition. Very happy with your products and service

Works as advertised. If you want extra water resistance you can put 2 pieces of tubing on the wire, shrink the shorter one over the splice, then slide the longer one into place and shrink it too.

Ask the Experts about this Deka Electrical Tools

  • Best Way to Use Heat Shrink for Wiring
The best way to use heat shrink like the part # DW05449 is to use a heat gun. A heat gun is similar to a blow dryer except it is MUCH hotter. A blow dryer won't get hot enough. In a pinch you could use a candle. Trick is to get the flame close enough that it will melt the heat shrink but won't burn it.

  • Can Boat Trailer Have Electric Brakes Installed on It
Yes, electric trailer brakes are submersible. You'd think it would be an issue but most boat trailer manufacturers are now installing electric brakes as they are simpler to use and don't have issues. The trick is sealing off the exposed wire as much as possible with heat shrink like part # DW05449 to insulate it from the water. I also attached a help article that covers everything on adding electric brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.

  • Available Sizes of Heat Shrink Tubing
Part # DW05451 is a pack of 25 six-inch lengths of heat-shrink tubing. This tubing fits wire from 14-gauge to 18-gauge. Similar item # DW05449 works on wires from 10- to 14-gauge. You can use a heat gun like # ALL836717 to shrink the tubing once your electrical connections are complete.

  • Connecting Trailer Brake Output Circuit to Each Brake Magnet
Lets begin with the two leads that exit each brake magnet. One lead from each magnet needs to ground to the trailer frame. The brake magnets carry no polarity, so it does not matter which lead is grounded, and which lead is connected to the brake output circuit. Unfortunately, we do not offer a connector such as you describe. There are quick splice connectors available, but for a lasting, trouble-free connection I recommend soldering the connection and using heat shrink tubing to protect...

  • Trailer Turn Signal and Brake Lights Dont Work But Running Lights Do
Even if you have checked all of the connection points and fuses, there could still be a short in your wiring somewhere along the line. If you put proper protection on your soldering, the best protection would be using Heat-Shrinkable Tubing # DW05449 with Electrical Tape wrapped around the places that you soldered, then your splices should be okay. Otherwise the connections could jar loose, or in cold conditions they could become brittle and ineffective. If your connections look good,...

  • Wire Gauge For Extending Brake Magnet Wires on Lifted Trailer
Although the wires exiting the brake magnets on most electric brake assemblies are 14 or 16 gauge, 10 or 12 gauge wire is routinely used on the brake circuit from the trailer connector to the magnets. 12 gauge wire which we offer by the foot as part # 12-1-1 would work perfectly to construct a jumper to connect the wires from your brake magnets to the existing brake circuit on the trailer. Rather than using scotch locks or quick connectors, I'd recommend soldering the connections and...

  • Using Quick Splice Connectors for Water Proof Connection
If you're looking for a waterproof connection, I couldn't recommend quick splice connectors like the # SWC501925-1. The best solution to make the connection waterproof is to solder the connection then use a heat shrink tube like # DW05449 for 10-14 gauge wires or # DW05451 for 14-18 gauge wire. The second best option would be to use a heat shrink butt connector like # DW05745-5 for 10-12 gauge or # DW05744-10 for 14-16 gauge. Wrapping the connections securely in electrical tape would also...

  • Heaviest Duty Trailer Hitch for Diesel Motorhome
The heaviest duty hitch available for a 36 inch wide frame is rated for 16,000 lbs towing and 1,600 lbs tongue weight. This is a Class V trailer hitch that can be welded or bolted to the frame and it comes in a 7 inch drop version # 41990-07 and a 16 inch drop version # 41990-16. The drop is the distance from the top of the frame bracket to the center of the receiver tube. This hitch can also be purchased without brackets as part # 41990, if you can fit it directly to the frame. Higher...

  • I Need Help Picking Out a 3,500-lbs Axle, Brakes, Suspension
I have a solution for you, but I should warn you that the size of your trailer frame does not fit stock sizes for a 3,500 lbs axle. If you want to go with a traditional leaf spring, you can use all of the parts listed below, but you will have to have a local trailer axle dealer custom order an axle to fit your trailer. At this time we do not ship custom ordered axles and our stock axles fit trailer frames that are 74 inches wide and 80 inches wide. Other than the axle you can use: Brakes...
