Video Transcript for Review of Deka Wiring - 12-10 Gauge Butt Connectors - DW05745-10

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we take a look at the Deka yellow butt connectors for the 12 to 10 gauge size wire. And this is for a quantity of 10 connectors. Now these yellow butt connectors will join two lengths of 12 gauge or 10 gauge size wire and they'll insulate the connection with this heat shrinkable nylon for adjustability and durability. The yellow color will indicate the size wire that this connector will fit which is the 12 to 10 gauge size. And if you're not sure or remember which color fits what it is also stamped on the connector itself 12 dash 10 AWG.

Now to install these connector it's pretty simple. All you have to do is take the two wires you're wanting to connect. And at the end of it, strip off about a quarter of vincent quarter inch of the insulation, so you have a bare wire on each end and then you'll take the first wire and you'll stick it all the way into this side and push it until it goes as far as it will right in there's this metal casing in the center here, right in the middle there's a stopper. So when you put your wire in, it'll stop automatically. So just push it in all the way make sure your strip portion is under that metal casing and then take your crimper and just push down on that to crimp that wire to that side.

And then you'll do the same with the second wire. Take the strip den slide it all the way into it'll go no further make sure it's under the metal casing, crimp that end. And then once they're both crimp what you probably want to do is pull on the wires to make sure you got a good connection. Once that's good, then what you'll do is take a heat source, like a heat gun and then just apply heat up and down along this nylon here and it'll shrink over the insulation to completely seal around the connection and it prevents the elements from getting into that connection to cause a problem. Once that's all done, you're all set.

It's all ready to go. Now this part is for a quantity of 10 connectors. We do also sell it in a single pack which is part number DW Oh five seven four five dash one. And we also sell it in a five pack which is part number DW Oh five seven four five dash five but that should do it for the review on the Deka yellow butt connectors for the 12 to 10 gauge size wire for a quantity of 10..

by:

didnt shrink well, maybe i didnt have strong enough heat source , no instructions, and i had not used them prior.

by:

I’m still missing 3 items. Delay heat shrink. The tow bar 4 diode wiring kit and road master brake lite relay kit

I see that customer service is working with you to fix this issue.

Considering the package was a disaster when it arrived and many pieces missing I am not a happy customer. Only three of this item was received and not in a package of 10 as ordered. three, three separate tossed into the open box.

I am sorry to hear that your experience with us has been less than easy and efficient. I will pass this along to our customer service team and get you those missing connectors as soon as we can.

etrailer products and service are excellent! With their helpful videos and staff (plus a little help from Curt Manufacturing and our teardrop trailer manufacturer (CampInn)) I was able to install electric brakes on the trailer, and a controller in my vehicle by myself. I had never installed electric brakes before. Everything works perfectly!

by:

The heat shrink butt connectors worked as advertised. Great Product.

All is well!

by:

I purchased a 5th wheel wiring harness and heat shrink butt connectors,
for my 2015 GMC Sierra. I installed a tail gate light bar and did not want to cut the factory wiring. With the harness I was able to plug into the factory trailing plug
and butt connect to the light bar, while still being able to use both the 7 blade and flat trailer connectors. It made for a easy and very clean connection. thank you to
Steve and the E trailer web site for helping make this a easy job.

by:

The entire shipment arrived quickly, ordered Sunday and it was there Wednesday.

by:

Same exact brand that was on my trailer. Easy replacement of the brakes. A full $50 cheaper than the exact ones at the dealer where I purchased the trailer. Very happy.

Everything good. About to get the trailer inspected. Brakes are fine.

by:

Easy to use and they shrank up really well even on the little wires

by:

Received all the parts to rebuild my travel trailer brakes in a short time. Everything from lug nuts, heat shrink splices, drums, bearings, seals, brake backing plates with complete brake assemblies. All in two boxes, albeit two heavy boxes... Total rebuild time from bare axles to tires on and torqued, about 2.5-3 hours. Everything I needed was there. Thanks to Sam G. for the great customer service.

by:

100% will and have ready reccomended etrailer!! I called because I truthfully had no idea what all I needed so I was hoping an expert would help me. My hold time was long, the recording told me approximately how long and it was accurate. Also, it's three weeks before the Fourth of July and everyone wants something to get road worthy. No big deal.
Once Geoffrey was on the phone I was absolutely blown away. He was patient, understood exactly what I was looking for (even though I didn't) and was incredibly helpful in the phone. He took his time to make sure we were going to have everything we needed to get the job done and get camping. He checked to make sure we were ordering the right size, even when our owners manual was super confusing he assisted in how to figure out exactly what we needed.
Shipping... Wow. We placed our order and less than 13 hours later it had been picked, packaged and was on its way to a shipping facility. We received it 2 days after placing the order at 7pm. We are close, but still, that's incredible!

Completely satisfied with every aspect of this experience.

by:

The product arrived promptly as scheduled. The installation is simple: bolt the unit on the trailer frame with the supplied star washers and hook up the single power wire. The jack worked as advertised. Speed was typical for an electric jack.

The quality of the jack could be better. The three housing screws were pushed thru the plastic cover. Repaired by removing the screws and reinstalling with small washers. The fuse holder, which is already installed on the power wire below the housing, is not water proof, which should be for an exterior application. Time will tell if the unit is better than my initial observations.

Suggestion: the manual jack handle needs to be longer so it clears the top the of the propane tanks.

by:

These connectors are the bomb. I am looking to see if I can find more in my local area for household projects.

by:

Great website, easy to locate and order the right parts, fabulous delivery speed. Love eTrailer.com's videos to guide you through the installation -- THANKS!!
I agree with previous reviews that the packaging needs to improve. I had one brake assembly that had damage electric wires during shipping & I needed to repair. That is the only gripe I have. Other than that, THANKS!

by:

I changed my trailer brakes to electric the NEV-ER-ADJUST brakes are good quality as is the heat shrink butt splices, 12-2 cable for the brakes. Glad I purchased new seals as there easy to damage when removing Very satisfied Thanks

by:

Order was complete and delivered in a timely manner. Only problem (minor) was the 7way pigtail was not wired to color code. Had to use test light to get 3 of the wires in correct location. Could be a problem if someone wasn't comfortable with ringing out wires.

by:

I had ordered a wiring harness but it didn't fit my truck, called etrailer got the right one on order ,and they emailed the return shipping label so I could send it back. These people are great to do business with, plus being very helpful in finding the right part.

by:

I had very little room between my spare tire and the socket. It's probably listed somewhere but I couldn't find it for the two I was looking at. I made an online inquiry and Michael H. got right back to me with all the dimensions and clearances needed, which convinced me to go with the HM48470. Ordered it, some wire and a receiver lock, which arrived today. Will wait for the snow to melt before I crawl under there to install them. Thanks again for the great service!

by:

Was a great recommendation buy etrailer.com in their installation video for my wiring harness. Glad I took their advice. Product was much cheaper than the local stores I looked at.

by:

Ordered 3 parts: RM-156-25; RM-156-75 and DW05745-10. All received very quickly, as is the case when I purchase from etrailer. More importantly, I get a 'live person' when I call for assistance and the service rep. is always knowledgable ( not an answering service that "will have someone call back". Time was spent with me answering all my questions and providing suggestions and opinions when I as for them, related to my project. Great company, great service - keep up the great work!

by:

connectors and breakers to hook up my brake controller arrived in order, installed easily, and lasted 1 year so far...

by:

I really like the idea of any outdoor wiring connector that has self-sealing heat shrink. I don’t agree with the suggestion of using a lighter to activate the heat shrink—use a proper heat gun designed for this.

by:

This part is a unique bundle etrailer has put together that is exactly what any Colorado/Canyon owner needs if their vehicle came without a tow package. The installation video was excellent and makes it possible for anyone to self install in their driveway.

by:

Ordered several electrical connectors, wire and a wire tester .. all items came in good condition ,looking forward to using the tester as soon as I can I am sure it will do the job.

  • Is It Safe To Add Electric Brakes To A Boat Trailer
Sure you can! A lot of boat trailer manufacturers put electric brakes on their trailers without any issues. We do recommend disconnecting the trailer wiring from the vehicle before backing into water just to err on the side of caution. In the past a lot of trailer companies only used hydraulic brake assemblies on boat trailers because water and electricity don't mix well. However, a lot of components to trailer brake installation have improved over the years such as the casing on wiring...

  • Right Trailer Tail Light Is Not as Bright As Left
It sounds like there may either be an issue with the ground, or on the power circuit of that particular wire. If the LED lights that you're using only have a single wire, they're going to ground via the mounting hardware so you'll want to verify that they are firmly attached to the trailer. If you've got a ground wire for all of the lights and other electrical functions on the trailer, you'll want to make sure that it is firmly connected to a paint and rust free spot on the trailer's frame....

  • Connector Recommendation to Wire in Trailer Brakes
You can use butt connectors like the part # DW05745-10 or if you have a soldering iron you can solder the connections and then wrap the connections in electrical tape like part # DW04367. The butt connectors have a nylon insulation that you can apply a heat gun to which will also insulate the connection. If this is a boat trailer it's important to make the connections as waterproof as possible.

  • Recommended Solution to Re-Wire 4 Way Trailer Plug with 8 Wires
I have a solution for you, but you will need to cut off your existing plug and re-wire this to a new 4 way connector. Your current trailer plug appears to have wires for the left (yellow) and right (green) turn signal, brown wires for the running light circuits on the left and right side of the trailer (one for each side), ground wires for all of these independent of each other and a ground for the plug itself that connects to all of the other wires. • Can Two 14 Gauge Wires Fit i nthe Same End on a Heat Shrink Butt Connector
You would need a larger size heat shrink butt connector to fit two 14 gauge wires together in one end. The largest we have are for 10 to 12 gauge wire, # DW05745-10, and that size would likely work. There isn't a specific gauge wire used for the color of the insulation around the wire. In some applications where the red wire is for 12 volt power a larger gauge should be used. But in a 4-Wire set up on a trailer where the functions are running lights, turn signals/brake lights, and ground...

This wire is also resistant to corrosion from water in general - it doesn't have a special rating for salt water. • Can Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-2 be Submerged in Water
That is an excellent question and is asked more often than you think. Electric brakes like what come in the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-2 can be submerged in water when you are loading/unloading your boat. Since water and electricity don't play nice together you do need to disconnect the wiring to your tow vehicle before backing into the water. • Recommended Wire Gauge for Electric Trailer Brakes
I'm pretty sure trailer brakes themselves tend to have 12 gauge wire but we recommend using 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 for your brake circuit simply because it allows more electricity to reach the destination. By the time the electricity travels to the brake kits it will be low enough for 12 gauge wire to work great, but we want something slightly larger at the source so that we aren't restricted. We always recommend going with 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 for the electric brakes.
