1 year review. I installed this product on my 2017 Toyota Highlander. As a person inexperienced with vehicle electrical systems, I found the installation challenging but achievable. I appreciated the advice and videos from etrailer.com. I liked the final fit and finish on my vehicle when using manufacturer hitch and bumper kit. After 1 year of usage, I have found 4 specific opportunities for improvement. 1. Water accumulation in the plug cover flap. After rain, I flip the flap up and water spills out of the crevice in the flap. There is also a small amount of water in the plug itself, but unclear if there is rain entering the socket or if this is from spillage when the flap is opened. This needs to be sealed to protect the plug! 2. Poor quality top mounting nuts and bolts. I overtightened one of the top bolts and it sheered off. I replaced it with zinc plated hardware. In my picture you can see after 1 year of use the included bolt on the left is corroded and the hardware store bolt looks new. 3. Poor quality front mounting screws. You can see the 4 rusting screws in the picture. These are designed to be exposed to weather, so I was surprised to find rust forming after the first few weeks. 4. Poor quality attachment point for the flat connector. The 4 way slips onto the side of the 7 way mount and is held on by rubber friction. It never stays in place and is always dangling. One other suggestion is to offer a kit made for the newer wireless brake controllers. It could have less wire, fewer connectors, and cost less. Because of the above problems I will have to replace the 7 way plug soon. Therefore I gave the product only 2 stars and would not recommend purchasing it.

About a year ago, I purchased a brake controller and parts to install a 7-pin trailer connector on my Ford Edge. The installation all went well and I used the Dielectric Grease to seal the wire connections at the connector. My four-star rating was given simply because I don't know if the grease is working as I hope it is. Time will tell more years down the road. As a side note, I made an additional bracket to enclose both connectors (4-pin & 7-Ping, see photo) to keep the 4-Pin connector from sliding out of place because it was only retained on three sides without my bracket.

I purchased this 7-pin connector for my 2007 FJ Cruiser. I was excited to get this installed, and found that the wiring was solid. I chose to cut the 4-pin connectors off of my FJ and this adapter. The fewer plugs the better! I like to solder and shrink wrap me connections. While the plug and wiring are really nice, the mounting bracket is junk. It’s very thin metal which appears to be simply painted, not powder coated. It also has a notch on the side for the 4-pin connector. This is the worst part. The rubber around the 4-pin is grooved, presumably to fit into the notch in the mounting plate. But it is not secure at all. The 4-pin simply falls out and dangles even with nothing connected. And there is no way to secure it. This is a significant design flaw.

Thank you for your review! It actually looks like you have that bracket on the wrong side of the 7-Way. The right side is a little wider so if you flip it to the left side youll have enough room for the 4-Way to fit properly.

The installation videos and instructions provided by etrailer are exceptional and are one of the main reasons why I purchased this kit. My second reason for purchasing this kit rather than buying everything local was for the duplex wire which I could not find local unless I was willing to use outlet wiring or two single wires. There are two things I don't like about this kit and two things that just bothers me. First the duplex wire I wanted so bad is too short. I had to mount my controller on the left side of steering wheel just to have enough wiring. Second the wiring on the 7/4 way connector isn't even a foot long so I had to remove the large ring terminal carefully and install it on a piece of white white I cut from running the duplex from the back to the front and use a buck connector to join it to the white wire on the 7/4 way connector. Once I did that I was finally able to ground the connector to my frame. As well I don't like how the 4 pole connector can easily fall off the bracket. It makes the connector look cheap. Lastly, they should really include the No-Drill Mount 18140 with the kit. Thankfully I was able to use my old mount for my existing 4 pole. So if the duplex wire had been two feet longer and the kit included a better 7/4 way connector I would give this a 5 Star rating.

I have a 2018 BMW X2 that did not come with a factory tow package. I had an etrailer hitch and 4 way plug installed last year and has been perfect since. I just recently purchased a camper and needed to have a Brake controller & Brake controller 7 way deluxe kit installed. My mechanic installed them with the detailed instructions that the units came with without any issues. The Tekonsha P3 is extremely user friendly and is working flawlessly. A bit overkill for my car being I can only tow max 3500 pounds, and my camper is 1 axel. this unit is rated up to 3 axles. I look at it like this way, when I trade in my BMW I will take my P3 with me. etrailer is amazing with the support & products they provide and I highly recommend them to anyone who asks me.

This set up will work for those who want a dual plug bumper mount plug setup. I give three stars for two reasons: 1) There are 4 screws surrounding the 7 way plug. They are not plated and rusted within days. Because they are visible, it makes it look cheap. 2) The 4 pin is not integral to the unit. Basically, it is pig tailed in at the wires and the flat plug itself is intended to pinch between two metal ears on the side of the 7 way plug. You can not plug in and unplug the 4 flat with one hand because it will not stay in place. Outside of these issues, it does the job.

Very straightforward install on our Jeep JKU. Plenty of wire and everything you need for the job. Only dropped it down to 4 stars for 2 reasons: First the provided screws to attach the bracket to the chassis are garbage. Both snapped off in the holes and had to be drilled out adding quite a lot of time and swearing to an otherwise easy job. Secondly the bracket attachment for the 4 pin plug is laughably bad. It is so loose that I am sure it will spend most of its life dangling after it falls off.

This seemed to work pretty much as expected. Installation takes much longer than indicated on the sales info videos etc. I expected that, it just takes more time for a DIYer to verify all the wiring connections are correct, before actually cutting and connecting things (measure twice, cut once). I am not sure about the use of auto reseting circuit breakers here. In a serious fault, they will just continue to reset, automatically, until the circuit breaker fails; OPEN - no problem, OR ... CLOSED - something burns up. I chose to add #14 fusible links on the battery side of these circuit breakers to assure a safe fault should one occur. Will see over time if this was a good choice.

Included everything needed to wire the control unit for the electric brakes on my sailboat trailer. Installation of the 4-wire flat plug & the 7-pole plug was a snap. The hardest part of the whole installation was running the wire from the plug at the back of my 2015 Subaru Outback to the engine compartment, because I chose not to just run it outside underneath the car, but rather inside along the floor/ door jambs driver side; but it was very do-able and made for a very 'clean' install. Subarus have a factory installed plug to connect a 4-wire flat trailer plug (easy), but nothing for a 7-pole plug as they are not normally used to tow a trailer large enough to use electric brakes. However, the brakes on my trailer had been converted from hydraulic to electric by the previous owner. The Subaru brake switch has 5 wires coming out of it, so I had to go to the dealer and ask them to identify the specific wire I needed for the brake control to be correctly wired. Done, done, & done. :-{D

Purchased a Teckonsha Voyager brake controller and the ETBC7 install kit. The instruction an video were very clear and easy to follow. Installed on a 2007 Ford Ranger Sport. Tech support was also very helpful on the one question I did have.

Make sure you crimp everything well! After working great for a year, ended up paying (last second problem before a trip) to have a dealer diagnose why none of the lights worked at all when they had been fine up to that point. The left rear passenger-side area (jack storage etc, so occasionally things get moved around) wiring had the black power wire pulled out of the crimp, which had not been tight enough, causing all lights to not function.

product was excellent and COMPLETE. everything you need with very DETAILED directions. i also ordered the prodigy P2 to complete my install. both were excellent and very recommended. only modification was on the actual plastic cover on bumper, i cut away minimal pieces with razor knife for perfect fit. you can look at all the pics to check out install. I took advantage of the reverse light wire and put LED light bar on back of trailer. i made one email to e trailer for exact numbers for my make and model. the response was pretty impressive. Full detail with pictures and product numbers all set up so all i had to do was press order and pay for it. This is how american companies are supposed to be ran......I LOVE IT!!!!

The installation is pretty straightforward and didn't take too long. The biggest issue with the kit is that the screws used to mount the 7-way/4-way bracket to the car are already rusting through pretty heavily after less than one year. I don't live near the ocean or up north where salt is a factor. I would have liked to have used a different set of wires instead of stretching out the left-over cable and running it back through the firewall in my vehicle, too. For a budget kit, I would have paid a bit more for it to all be done correctly. The 3-way clips used to attach to the factory brake wire are also not the best and I found myself troubleshooting my controller multiple times to ensure that these were making a solid connection. I recommend soldering for a more stable connection there, but that type of thing should be left to professionals. Just make sure you have a good bind on that connector and the kit will do just fine.

Used this kit to install a Teconsha brake controller on our 2016 Honda CRV last year. Took a couple hours to install- crawling around underneath the vehicle... I'm no electrician but it works! The kit had everything I needed, and YouTube provided detailed instructions. Been on 6 camping trips since then and the brakes work great. Would definitely recommend.

This kit worked well for me. I have an Autobrake controller in the trailer and this don’t need the blue controller wire from the car. But it was just as easy to run two wires to the front as one so I opted to run the Bkue wire anyway. It’s there in case I need it in the future. Couple of suggestions. There are circuit breakers available that have a red rubber cover. I didn’t like the idea of exposed high amperage posts so I got one of those covers. This could easily be included in the kit. I also found the self tapping screws were less than effective. They could be heftier. A couple of disappointing things. Before installing, I found that I could not get a test plug to insert into the receptacle. I even walked up the steeet and tried to plug in my neighbors trailer. But when I spoke to strailer, the person just kept insisting that there couldn’t be anything wrong with the receptacle. Not exactly helpful. Pretty annoying actually. I subsequently found that indeed one of the center prongs was bent. So I guess it could be the receptacle after all. Also there are small diameter bolts that hold the receptacle to the mounting bracket. Oddly these are not weather resistant and the heads are rusting. With those caveats, I’m am happy with the kit and it has worked well so far.

Great product. Everything I needed was in the kit and instructions were great. The kit was installed in a 2019 Highlander. The Highlander came with a 4 pin trailer hookup and we needed the 7 pin to include trailer brakes and a charge line. Works great!! We are towing an Rpod trailer with trailer brakes.

Overall, this is a good kit, and is much better than having to do it from scratch. I mounted this on a 2016 Chevy Express 2500 with a DrawTite class V hitch. This kit did not come with an L-bracket to mount the receptacle to a hitch like they show in the video. But, you can get one from etrailer. I fabricated my own L-bracket and mounted it upside down so it would be protected from road debris by the hitch itself. It made the receptacle fit perfectly against the bottom of the bumper. (see pic) You will also need a couple extra blue butt connectors for this particular vehicle that are not included in the kit. It would also be nice if the kit came with a few more feet of wire covering to use under the hood. I would recommend following the video carefully when installing the Tekonsha Prodigy 2 controller. It's a great video.

This. Kit. Is. Genius. GREAT product! Great, easy, precise instructions, and literally EVERYTHING needed for installation. Crazy that it also includes a little circuit tester. Since I pull multiple trailers, I LOVE that the mounting bracket holds both a 4- and a 7-pin plug. This kit was clearly designed by someone who knows EXACTLY what they're doing and how to do it correctly!

I will be using this kit along with echo wireless brake controller. (No wire running to cabin!!) however, the 10 gauge wire was very slightly too short from perfect spacing for my 2017 highlander( doesn’t have room for make any loop wires for any repair in the future), I terminated the wires at 7 pin connector and then routed the wire under body, it’s dirty and sandy. The terminal lug for the ground wire fell off, but i just re-terminated it and it’s no big deal. I had to loosen some panels and make sure the wire won’t chaff against any structure. I do find that routing the wire down between the fuel tank and suspension bracket could be problematic down the road, but there wasn’t much option. i end up putting some chafe protection foam on the tank and the wires... and aluminum tape the wire to the fuel tank to prevent the wire from chafing against the bracket. Used a lot more tie wrap then what was provided...

Product arrived on time and in perfect condition. Instillation videos were very helpful. Disappointed that the cutout on the switch hanger doesn’t hold the four pole connector (rubber part) without a zip tie. Also the design of the seven pole connector collects water. There should be a rubber seal between the housing and the cover opening. Connector worked as designed.

This is a great product. I think etrailer made it easy for our novice DIY. I basically read the instructions and watched video a few times before I start. The installation is not difficult; it is just a dirty and tiring work. One thing I should mention, is that grounding is very important. I wasted most of my time for not properly grounding. The first place you encounter the issue of grounding will be when you test the break wire in the box under the dash to the left side of the steering column. Using the tester, you must find a bare metal part for grounding, otherwise the other end of the tester would lit up properly. This is not mentioned or emphasized in the video or written instructions. Painted surface won't do since it insulates the metal. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the break wire won't lit up, calling etrailer customer service representatives, nobody really told me this. I basically figured out by myself. Hopefully you won't need to waste time on this. The second place you will encounter grounding is in the front engine box near the battery where you must drill into the frame to attach the ground wire, like instructed by etrailer. But I didn't like to drill "unnecessary" holes into my frame, I just used a ziptie to attach the ground wire to the frame, so grounding wasn't good. I eventually figure out I must drill into the frame to get to the bare metal for grounding. The 3rd place is in the back, there is another ground wire you must drill into the frame to reach bare metal. I choose to drill into the tire tub, since it won't affect the structure integrity of the frame rails. Either way it will work as long as you drill into the bare metal. The wires supplied by etrailer is long enough for this installation.
