With a conventional electric brake controller, hauling a fifth-wheel trailer with a semi or truck that has exhaust brakes can be a challenge. Whenever you're going down a long downgrade and you engage your exhaust brakes, the brake controller could turn on too. If that happens, all the way down that long hill, the trailer brakes will stay engaged and potentially overheat. This will wear down your brakes a lot faster. You'll have the same problem if you put your hazard lights on, with the brakes pulsing with each blink. You could really dig into your wiring and do some splicing to fix this problem. Or you could get the Hayes air-actuated brake controller and have smooth, flawless braking with a controller made for air brakes.
Proportional Braking
The Hayes air-actuated brake controller gives you proportional braking for the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.
This air-activated controller ties into your vehicle's air brakes to sense exactly how much pressure you are applying to the brakes. It then sends a signal to the trailer to apply the brakes with a matching amount of force. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action just smooth, proportional braking every time.
For assistance in properly wiring the Hayes air-actuated brake controller, please refer to the diagram below:

INSTALL OF HAYS AIR ACTUATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER PART NUMBER 100400C ON A 2018 FRIEGHTLINER CASCADIA WITH A 45 FOOT GOOSE NECK
Well, my first attempt to put an electric brake controller on my 2018 Frieghtliner cascadia was complete failur. I used an agility brake controller first when it was complete it kept flashing 10 when the brakes were applied, do your self a favor and waist of money don’t try to install one of the brake controller you get at advance or O’riellys they wont work on a 2018 but will work on 2006 Frieghtliner but here’s the thing i suggest going to extra mile and buying this hay’s air brake over electric and over electric over hydronic which’s is what im using with my 2018 Frieghtliner after dragging this trailer around for at 6 months not relaxing the brakes wasn’t working on the trailer. Fast forward to Monday 10-10-22 i called and ordered this air brake over electric part number 100400c had the mechanic do install for me ooooooooooooh sweet sweet music to hear that break away brake system fire up and apply the brakes for the first time in a 6 months was bliss. Ordered 10-10-22 received 10-14-22 package was damaged and wet BUT WAS NO FUALT OF ETRAILER’S damaged in transit by usps, all parts was still in box went to install it.
On my install we hooked all wires accordingly like the instructions says to son the air connection part we cut a corner, on the install the instruction says to use a dual check valve to install the air line we only counted to the mail supply air line tested for air when applying the brakes got the correct line put a t connecter inline connected the 1.4 inch air hose ran through body hole connected to the hays controller tested the brakes and then the music started playing.
BOTTOM LINE IS YOU CANT GO WRONG IF YOUR TOW UNIT IS AIR EQUIPPED AND YOUR TRAILER IS ELECTRIC OR ELECTRIC OVER HYDRAULIC1449461
This is an excellent way to provide proportional brake energy to trailers with electric brakes. Well designed, reasonably priced.1288225

Definitely a great product! Easy installation and great instructions! I use my semi to pull my camper occasionally and this box works great for the electric brakes on the camper from the air brakes on my truck. 854653
etrailer is very reliable for getting the orders out in a timely manner. The website is very easy to navigate and there are always explanations about products so you can verify that you are getting the proper product for what you need.1284619

Needed a brake controller for my RV hauler conversion. Worked great and very easy to install. Received quickly and staff was very helpful!
Installed and tested but not yet used. The controller is of very high design and build quality. For the air connection, all I had to do was tee into the air line that goes to the brake light switch which already has a double check valve in place.1243941

I have not hooked up the unit yet. I have an overland osprey diesel pusher(dp). The coach has an exhaust brake. When the exhaust brake engages the brake lights automatically come on. Using a conventional electric brake controller like the Prodigy P2 would engage the trailer brakes when ever the exhaust brake engages, causing the trailer brakes to burn up on long down grades. I know this can be fixed by adding a diode in the wiring, but that involves tracing a lot of wires until I found the right one. this unit doesn't need to connect to the brake lights. it only needs the air pressure being applied to the brakes to engage the trailer brakes. It really is a sweet unit for a DP with air brakes. 682528

the information provided with the is stall is very veg they could have told you where
to get a check valve they could have showed you in detail how and where to hook
into the air valve , what lines to hook into , or offed a video on how to install
for what it cost it is a rip off, you need to let hays know this for future sales619342

This is a pretty specialized piece of equipment whose install procedure will vary according to the vehicle it is installed in. At this time, we have not had the opportunity to install one, which is why we do not have a video to provide.

Have found no issue, and recommend this product for air to electric or air to electric overhydraulic system. My power unit is heavy enough that I hardly need trailer brakes, I have them set to come on mildly on the trailer. This unit makes my tractortrailer unit legal for highway use.

Works great on my Peterbuilt 330 set up with a 12' flatbed with gooseneck and 2" receiver hitches. The electric trailer brakes actually work when you expect them to.340715

Purchased this for a Class 8 truck with air brakes. It was easy to mount and to install. Wiring it up was a snap, but I was surprised that I ordered 2 and did not receive instructions with either. Had to go online to get a schematic and operating/mounting instructions. Wasn't a big deal as etrailer had it on the product description, but if you're old school like me you expect to receive instructions with the product.796657

Hard to adjust and you can't test the trailer brakes with it. Never fells like the trailer is getting power to activate the trailer brakes even though there's 12 volts going to the brake wire875049

Totally bulletproof compared to wimpy electronic controller. Breeze to install. Easy to control.
Sounds like a big project to undertake. I have attached a helpful article that explains all of the components needed to add electric brakes to a trailer you can check out.
Unfortunately, we do not have hubs and drums designed to work with 20 inch wheels, so I would not be able to recommend any of the systems we have to offer. Another consideration is the brake mounting flange. If you do not have a brake mounting flange on your axle, you would need to have a certified welder install them... view full answer...
The Warner Brake Controller # HA100400C that you referenced is designed to activate electric trailer brakes. It uses air pressure to determine how much braking power to apply. If your trailer has a combination of electric and air brakes you could install this on your trailer and tap into the air brake system to also apply the electric brakes. view full answer...
The Brake Controller part # HA100400C control handle can be used to adjust the rate of application of the trailer brakes. There is a knob on the side of the controller and rotating the knob the counter-clockwise will increase trailer brake sensitivity. view full answer...
For a brake controller designed to be installed on a vehicle with air brakes to control the electric brakes of a trailer you would want the Brake Controller # HA100400C.
This controller will be able to sense the amount of braking pressure you are applying and will correctly apply the trailer brakes in proportion to this.
I attached a review video for you to check out for this controller as well. view full answer...
The braking force level on the Hayes Air Utility Brake Control # 1300-80 is adjusted by rotating the black knob on the side of the housing either counter-clockwise for more force or clockwise for less, in the same way that a volume knob operates. view full answer...
The Hayes air brake controller # HA100400C is designed to be used with air brakes on the vehicle and electric brakes on the trailer so it will not work for you. The only brake controllers that we have are for air to electric, electric over hydraulic, or just electric trailer brakes. You would have to convert the trailer over to a different braking system to use one of these controllers.
This would require a lot of changes to the trailer including the hubs and drums, brake assemblies, wiring... view full answer...
The Hayes Air Utility Brake Controller # HA100400C may be used in FMVSS 121 systems.
When connecting the brake controller, you will likely need to contact the air brake system manufacturer to get the proper three-way t-tubing and double check that you need it for hooking this to your air brake system on your truck or your tractor. This t-fitting will allow the controller to tap into your vehicle's air brake system.
In addition to connecting to the air brake system, you will also want... view full answer...
You really need to have the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C mounted in a location that is close enough for the driver to reach out and grab the manual override lever if needed. I know it's tempting to mount it near where there's an air line but if that's at the back of the vehicle we can't recommend that. If your trailer ever starts swaying you can easily kill the sway by applying the manual override as it will pull the trailer back from the tow vehicle and stop the sway. view full answer...
Properly rated electric brakes work really well. In general though air brakes are seen on commercial braking applications like semi trucks and electric are on trailers that get towed more by full size trucks that are non-commercial.
I wouldn't say there's a hard line between where electric brakes and air brakes applications meet as it's more application orientated. If you have a trailer currently with air brakes or electric brakes I'd recommend sticking with what it has now as chances... view full answer...
You most likely do not have an electric trailer brake controller installed in your Freightliner as it was most likely setup for controlling air brakes, but since your trailer has the correct matching connector on it you can easily install a brake controller like the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller part # HA100400C which is designed to integrate with your semi air brakes and apply the trailer's electric brakes in a proportional amount for smooth braking.
I attached a review... view full answer...
It's possible the controller is faulty but what my first thought was is that there's a short on the wiring for the controller which is causing voltage to back feed on the red wire of the controller and light up your brake lights. Try connecting the controller again and make sure there isn't any exposed wire touching and if the problem persists then the controller is at fault but if you see the problem go away that would indicate you had a wiring short problem. view full answer...
While we don't carry any two-way check valves for an air brake system that the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C would install on, I can say that two-way check valves are also known as double check valves and a quick browser search found that these are fairly easy to come by. I'm sure if you have a truck shop nearby that they would have just what you need as well. Just make sure that the check valve fits with your current air lines and that the tubing from the check... view full answer...
For your 2015 F650 tow truck with air brakes, I recommend the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # HA100400C. This controller senses the amount of pressure applied to your brakes and then smoothly applies the trailer brakes in proportion. It has the slide bar manual override and will work on trailers with up to 8 brake assemblies.
I've attached a review video and installation instructions to assist. view full answer...
The Hayes brake controller # HA100400C is designed for exactly what you mentioned. It is designed to be installed on a vehicle like yours with air brakes to operate the electric brakes of a trailer. view full answer...
The blue wire of the Warner Air Utility Brake Control # HA100400C gets run to the brake output circuit of the trailer connector that is used on the tow vehicle. This is the circuit that carries the braking power for the trailer's brakes. I attached a diagram that shows how this controller wires to a vehicle for you to check out as well. view full answer...
Actually the Hayes brake controller part # HA100400C requires a 2 way check valve only if the vehicle has primary and secondary service lines.
I attached a diagram that shows how the controller wires in as well as how a check valve would get used if needed. view full answer...
We do have a brake controller for a motorhome with air brakes pulling a trailer with electric brakes, if that was what you were referring to, the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C. This is the only and best option as there is no type of external adapter for electric brakes.
I've added a link to a video review of this controller for you to check out. view full answer...
The Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # HA100400C mounts to the inside of your 2007 Nemar Essex at the dash just like other electric brake controllers will. It needs to be installed on the inside of the vehicle for proper function. It has a slide bar override that needs to be within reach for emergency trailer braking.
The wiring connects just the same as an electric brake controller. Blue is trailer brake output, red is stop light swith, white... view full answer...
The black wire of the Hayes controller part # HA100400C is for the 12 volt power source. This powers the controller. The red wire will need to attach to the output side of the truck or tractor's stoplight switch. White is ground.
The blue wire goes to the brake output circuit of the trailer connector. This carries the voltage to the trailer brake assemblies. view full answer...
Since your Volvo 780 semi has air brakes the part # HA100400C that you referenced would work well as it is designed to tap into your air brake system and apply a proportional amount of braking power to your trailer's brakes as it senses coming through your air brake system. If you are looking for the best option this is what I would go with as it's going to give you a way to apply the same amount of pressure as your semi brakes are applying. view full answer...
We have the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C which is an air to electric brake controller like you need. This will connect to the air brakes of a trailer and allow you to operate electric trailer brakes. view full answer...
The Warner Air Utility Brake Controller part # HA100400C that you referenced is designed to allow vehicles with air brakes to control the brakes of a trailer that are electric. If that describes your setup then this will work well for you. view full answer...
Actually when you wire in the Hayes Brake Controller part # HA100400C you use the vehicle's wiring and not the trailer wiring. You would need to find a stop light circuit for the red wire of the controller.
Typically this is found at the brake pedal switch or in some case the wiring to the third brake light is used.
I attached a help article on brake controller installs for you to check out as well. view full answer...
Sounds like the red wire of the # HA100400C is connected to a circuit that has 12 volts all the time. You need to make sure it is connected to a circuit that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied. view full answer...
