Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Today were going to review part number HM56007. This is the Hopkins custom tail light wiring kit for tow vehicles. This is a custom fit part number. This is designed to fit the Ford Focus, the automatic and the manual models starting in 2012. This will let you wire your vehicle to accept your RVs tail brake and turn signal lights for flat towing. This will wire your towed car as a combined system so that the brake and the turn signals travel along the same wire.

This will provide this four-way flat plug at the front of your towed car to connect to your motor home. This part number does include everything shown here on the table. It includes the wiring harness, the mounting bracket and the hardware for the four-way. It includes the grounding screw to ground the white wire. It includes some cable ties which can be used to take up the slack of any of the length of the wire that you might need, and it includes a dye electric grease packet, the dye electric grease you would put on your four-way before you attach the four-way from your RV.

This does plug in quickly and easily. Theres no cutting or splicing with wires. The connection points are located right behind your vehicles tail lights. This converter right here will prevent electrical feedback to safeguard your towed cars electrical system. The weatherproof box keeps these built-in diodes to protect it.

This system will not interfere with your electrical system when the towed car is not hooked up to an RV. Again, this is custom designed for your vehicle. There are two items that you might need, the extension loop which is for connecting your towed car to your RV. It is sold separately. Thats part number HM48235.

Also the brake light relay that may be required if you are using a supplemental braking system. Thats part number RM88400. That we also sell separately.Basically when you go to install this youll just go to the back of your vehicle and right behind the tail lights what youll do is connect these connectors in line to the tail light connectors. Basically this one with the yellow wire in it would be for the drivers side so youll connect these to the back of the drivers side tail light. The other one with the long length of wire and the green wire in it is for the passengers side, so youll run this across to the passengers side. Connect these connectors behind the tail light and then youll run this length of wire all the way up to the front of your car and that will give you your four-way at the front, and what youll want to do is youll have this white wire with the eyelet on it so youll want to either find a screw that this can be grounded to to get a good clean ground or you can use the grounding screw they include, just drill a hole and use the grounding screw.Then when you have this at the front of your car what you can do is use this mounting bracket. Basically this mounting bracket would be used to hold this. What you want to do is make sure theres a side where theres a cutout for that dust cap, so what youll want to do is make sure your four-way is lined up with that cutout for the dust cap, just like that. Then when you close your mounting, just like that and then use these two mounting screws to go right through here to mount it to your vehicle, and you can still use your dust cap, just like that. 2014 Ford Focus

2014 Ford Focus SE sedan does not have the connectors on the tail lights as shown in installation videos. Instead they are inside the trunk behind the side covers. As a consequence the only way the cable can go from the module to the passenger side is via the top,of the trunk, and even then if is just barely long enough. Once I had all that figured out installation was pretty straight forward. Routed cable through the cabin instead of underneath which is a tight space if you can't raise the car. Seems like a much better solution than inserting extra bulbs in the light fixture.

    The white ground wire on a flat-towing harness like # HM56007 or # HM56008 will attach to the towed vehicle's frame or battery negative terminal. This will not have any effect on your Focus' transmission nor will it cause any issues with battery drain.
