Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Works perfect

GMC Yukon

Wow, what a great company to deal with! Am in the process of making my GMC Yukon a tow dingy and called to order the parts. Got to etrailer in my search and it ended there. These people KNOW their trailers and equipment, not only did I get everything I wanted for the best price on the net, but in two instances staff recommended other ways to do the same job that saved me about $309.00. There is one sales rep there, Katie D. who is on the top of her job, an immense help ordering, also pointing out where I can get additional help thru video that etrailer has. Just a great company to deal with.

Installed easily with video. Product as described and worked perfectly. Sales support was helpfull and patient.

Easy to install on 2008 Silverado
Kevin - 11/22/2020

I bought this wiring kit about a year ago. It worked great on my first trip towing my 2013 Chevy Silverado to Glacier National Park from KC and back. When I tried using it again about 6 months later it didn't work. I tried to unplug it to test the circuit and the tabs that keep it fastened together broke off. I gave up on it.

Best product ever.

Excellent customer service when ordering. Wiring kit arrived earlier than expected. Kit fit as advertised and minimal installation time. I would recommend etrailer for any towing, trailering, or RV accessories you need. Will definitely shop again.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado

The wiring harness fit great and was long enough to hide the wiring front to problems wire product, works great

2007 GMC Sierra Classic

Very good product. Only difficulty was in ordering. Not seeing, on line, the product I wanted prompted me to make a phone call. In which I was sent a splice harness when asked for a plug and play harness. This caused me to return it at my own expense. Bottom line,,,,make sure you know "Exactly" the harness you are needing to avoid exchanges as they come at your expense.

Product worked exactly as described. Thrilled about not having to cut my wires to make my lights work when flat towing. Bill E at etrailer was a great help, put me on this awesome product.

Everything still works great!

Chevrolet Avalanche

This kit is soooo much easier than having to splice in all the various components to get the same result. It is literally plug-and-play.
The relay went in pretty smooth too, only problem was finding the wires under a very crowded dash in my Chevy Avalanche. By the way, the white wire from the brake switch plug is the one you need.

This is great. It will install very eas ily.

2008 Chevrolet Silverado

Installed today, no problems, looks to be good quality and everything works
Make sure you hold the lock open when plugging it in or you will have trouble.
Not sure it is long enough for a long bed.

After using the truck for a year and having no problems I am still happy with this wiring harness an etrailer

Its a great and easy to use wiring kit for my 2013 chevy 2500 HD

2013 Chevrolet Silverado

I Installed on my 2013 Silverado with no problems. I pull the pickup with a Triple E Empress RV and have gone from Iowa to Key West last winter and from Iowa to Prince Edwards Island Canada last summer.

2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

again the order was handled promptly and received quickly. We appreciate you keeping us advised when the order is shipped and when it can be expected. We ordered something else from another company the same day and have not even received a response that they have received the order, but they put the debit through and got their money. Well pleased with your company.

Easy and quick installation. Works great.

  • Tow Bar Wiring Recommendation for 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500
The trailer connector on your 2001 Fleetwood Discovery should already have the turn signals converted to be combined so that it works with standard trailer wiring. Does your RV already have trailer wiring? Then for a tow bar wiring setup for your truck that will simply plug inline with vehicle's taillight harness you would want the part # HM56101. I attached a help article on tow bar wiring for you to check out as well.

  • Installing Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring Harness On 2012 Chevrolet Silverado
The instructions can be confusing because they show where the junction box is on both the driver and passenger side of the truck. You will only need one of the junction boxes, so I would recommend choosing the one that is easiest to get to. You will disconnect the blue connector from the junction box and then replace it with the connector on the # HM56101 harness. The other connector on the harness plugs into the connector you removed from the truck junction box. You will then need to...

  • Flat Towing Lighting Recommendation for a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500
Sounds like you have your flat towing setup all worked out with the exception of lighting. I attached a help article that covers the different lighting options available with the pros and cons of each. For your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 I would go with the Hopkins Custom fit harness part # HM56101 as this will basically just plug in line with your truck's taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillights.

I pulled one of the Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring Kit, part # HM56101 from our warehouse to take a look at the installation instructions. It can be confusing since they show the junction box that can be used on either the driver side or the passenger side. If you look on the frame at the rear of your truck on the driver side it will be adjacent to the spare tire. There will be 4 connectors plugged into the junction box. You will need to find the blue connector and disconnect it. Then plug the...

The cause is most likely a bad converter box on your Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56101. To test this you can have someone step on the brake pedal and use the LCD Digital Circuit Tester # PTW2992 on the input side to make sure the converter box is first receiving the signal. If everything is correct going into the converter then the next step is to test the wires on the output (4-Way) side of the converter. So if everything is right going in but not coming...

The Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring # HM56101 is a confirmed fit on your 2001 Chevy Silverado. Since you're using a Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR supplemental braking system, you'll also want to use the Brake Light Relay # RM-88400, which the lack of might be causing this issue where your brake lights aren't truly functioning properly. If you can let me know whether that part has also been installed, it would give me a better idea of what is really going on here.
