Will Lippert SolidSteps Work for You?
Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and some RVs. The fold-down steps from Lippert lift up to latch into your camper's doorway for storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.
The Lippert SolidSteps install inside your camper's doorframe. Measuring for this may seem tricky, but once you know what to look for, figuring out the right fit for your RV doorway is easy.
Measure between the door frame flanges - the doorway width - to determine the step size that will fit into your camper's doorway. You will need a doorway that is at least 29" wide to 36" wide for these steps to work.
If it turns out you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 24" wide to 36" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.
To make sure your doors will close when the steps are installed, measure from the top of the threshold plate to the bottom of the door. You will need a gap of about 1/4" to 3/8" to allow the door to close over the step's mounting plate.
The doorway threshold will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.
How Many Steps Do You Need?
To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will tell you how many steps you need.
The chart below displays doorway width measurements in the first column. If you determined you have an entry height between 22" and 28", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the second column. If you determined your entry height is between 27" and 36", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the third column. If you determined your entry height is between 35" and 44", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the fourth column. Choose the doorway width that is closest to your measurements without going over.
This page's step assembly is in bold text.

How Do You Install the Steps?
To install the steps:
Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
Place the mounting bracket into the camper doorway
Extend until feet touch the ground
Center the steps in the doorframe
Slide assembly forward until firmly placed against outside threshold
Install fasteners through the mounting holes into the camper floor
-Secure the hardware (not included) but dont tighten
Lift the step assembly into the doorway and make sure the latching arm engages
-If necessary, loosen the bolts on the latching arm to adjust
Tighten the latching arm bolts and the floor fasteners

First I didn’t understand why it took 8 days before the “in stock” product was shipped. 13 days after I placed my order I received my steps. I first noticed the top of the stringers were bent on both sides. (Really poor packaging by Lippart) Well I’ll live with that so started to install them. The threshold of the steps was severely warped due to the hinge being welded on. (Poor fabrication practices) I knew I would have to trim my screen door. But I never put the first fastener in (per instructions) BC the warped threshold wouldn’t allow for my main door to close. The warp is more than 3/8 of an inch which is a severe bow imo. Gonna call etrailer now and see what direction to travel now. And freight companies handle freight really rough these days.1307339
Well step showed up with a little damage due to ruff shipping handling. box was tore up, feet hanging out. turned out missing hardware also. I think these should be packaged better! etrailer. was great and gave some credit back for dents and hardware. The The main door closes fine with step out ,but I had trim quite a bit off the bottom of the screen door to get it to work as others have posted. So make bottom of door clearances part of your consideration when buying.
The install of step is easy and very basic other than screen door bottom clearance. The top step is huge and the steps are rock solid.
I am very happy with steps just plan on maybe some door modifications before you order them935206
These steps are great and the installation was quite easy. The original steps on the Rv were very unstable. These steps are extremely stable and easy to adjust. Storing the steps is easy and quick and the steps are surprisingly light to lift. Highly recommended.1238039

It's a great product makes getting in and out of your camper so much easier. Easy to lift and to adjust the legs to level.1271696

Once I got the steps installed they are excellent, but had to grind down the threshold and drill new holes in the steps to make them level.1266648

I am currently converting a 20' box truck into an RV. I have found the Lippert products are great fit for this endeavor. These steps are a no brainer for the 36" wide side entry which I am currently using a ladder to get in and out.1085917

by: David 03/16/2021
Purchased the manual fold down steps for my 5th wheel. Original fold out steps are weak and feel unsafe.
Ordering steps through Etrailer was very easy and they arrived earlier than the posted date.
Lippert box was very unsuitable and legs were sticking out through the end. They really need to beef up the packaging.
Installation was easy following the instructions provided. I also purchased the handrail accessory and installed it on the steps that works in conjunction with the existing handrail on the camper.
The steps are just what I had hoped for and are very sturdy for a 300 lb 6’4” man.985681

Long story short this was the 4th attempt at getting these steps but first 3 were via Amazon. First set were too long. The 4 step model for my camper were too long. Measurements really need to be questioned. I was "inbetween" and it was recommended to go with the 4 step model. Wrong recommendation. 3 step was needed for a perfect fit. Sent those back and then Amazon proceeded to ship me the 26" wide vs the 30" TWICE. In fact the second time it was the SAME BOX I sent back a few days earlier. So, I found the model needed on etrailer for same price. Everything installed as expected HOWEVER, I had to loosen up the bolts for the foot pad and the right leg extension because they just wouldn't move. ALSO, the box did not contain the underfloor mounting bracket needed(if you didn't have a solid wood floor). So that tells me I received a "sent back" unit from another customer. This was also evident by the way the box was taped up and the condition of the box. However, overall the steps are now installed and look great. Slight modification needed on screen door to get it to close but otherwise a great upgrade for the rv. 4 stars because of prompt delivery. Not 5 stars because of "assumption" that it was a returned from another customer item.783804

Fast shipping. Box was damaged when it arrived, but that was the fault of UPS. Looks like everything is ok inside. We won't be able to install these until the weather clears up, but we can hardly wait. We first saw these steps at a boat show and then some friends put some on their trailer. That first step coming out of the trailer is extra wide and that is so nice. We're also installing the lift assist kit. Will get back with you and let you know how the installation went.749980

The best Rv steps. Easy to install. All Rvs should have this type of entry steps. The ones that came with my Rv were junk. It was a blessing that when my tire blew out and took my factory stairsout as well, that i found "The solid step" Good improvement and a reasonable price.876870

The product was great but what was really great was any who I felt with all during my delivery when I called saying that I had not received my package yet she immediately took action and tracked down the status where it was and approximately when it would be in my hands. Amy your service was excellent . Thank u very stratified with the product and it’s installed. 766258

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps
Positives: This was a simple installation. The hardest part was removing the old steps-took 2 of us (and a few grunts!). I filed off the inner lip on the threshold and removed the transition strip to make things as level as possible prior to installation. It took about 3/4 hour to finish install after that. Great product, (first in-field use will be Thursday 10/8/20). Negatives: The shipping carton was trashed and loose parts were strewn throughout. I didn't receive the 4" #10 machine screws, washers, and lock nuts, so I used the wood screws but I'm pretty sure I'll need to through bolt the assembly to the trailer in the future. LCI - replacements please? Also, ordered clevis pins with bimini rings for easier support strut length adjustment. Overall: Very Positive Upgrade-Easy & Useful. I would recommend to anyone who wants a better steps than the OEM.897433
One year later and we’re very pleased with our purchase. Absolutely no problems and they provide a sturdier platform to get into our trailer. No complaints. We would purchase again.

Good and solid!! So much better than the stock spring board… but it’s not perfect. With this design you may have clearance issues deploying them and whatever is on the steps (dirt, water) when you put them up it ends up on the floor. Worth it for us.1286650

Buying the Lippert SolidStep for myself was one of the best purchases I have made! That AND the collapsable DC teapot. No longer is going up and down the steps like a walk through a fun house at the fair. I feel much safer and more secure with the solid steps and the Camco Fold-Away RV Grab Handle.1054094

The stairs went in easily. They are very well built and solid. So much nicer than the factory stairs! The process couldn't have been better, from ordering to shipping and delivery. Very satisfied!1063126
Yes, the Lippert SolidStep Fold-Down Steps like the Triple # LC791573 that you referenced will absolutely allow the trailer door to be closed when they're folded down for use. Like you mentioned in your question this will keep the inside safe from the elements while you're settled into your camping area and the steps are down for normal use.
I have attached a customer-submitted image of their 4-Step model installed with the trailer door closed, just so you can get a good picture of it... view full answer...
When the SolidStep part # LC791573 is installed on your RV there would be slight reduction in clearance above the threshold like you can see in the picture I attached. If it's already tight there it would become tighter. You may have to adjust your door but in general this does not cause interference. view full answer...
If the screen door is not close to closing you need to trim the bottom of the screen door frame which I have also had to do. To do this, with the steps down, take tape and place a piece on each side, down on the threshold, at the edge of the step bracket. Raise the steps up inside the door frame. Separate the screen door from the outer door, close your screen door and mark the bottom edge of the screen door frame at the edge of the tape. That is the width you need to cut. From each mark... view full answer...
We haven't fit the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps, # LC791573 specifically to a 2010 Montana. However, if you let me know the dimensions of the well step, how wide your door frame is and how high your threshold sits off of the ground, I can help you find the correct SolidStep for your application.
Measure between the door frame flanges for threshold width, and measure from the mounting point to the ground for the entry height. view full answer...
Although we haven't fit the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps on a 2018 Coachmen Freedom Express you shouldn't have any problems fitting these steps on your RV. As you noted we did modify the OEM threshold when we installed the part # LC791573 on a 2016 Forest River Salem Travel Trailer.
If you let me know how wide your door frame is and how high your threshold sits off of the ground I can help you find the correct SolidStep for your application. view full answer...
The Lippert Solidstep RV folding steps part # LC791573 do not attach to the brackets on the underside of the door so your 22 inch width bracket for pull out steps would not be an issue. As long as your doorway width is 24 inches wide and the entry height of the door is between 27 and 36 inches this will fit and work great. view full answer...
The difference between the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps # LC791573 and # LC791572 is that # LC791572 is narrower and will fit into a doorway width range of 25- 28-7/8", while # LC791573 will fit doorway widths ranging from 29" - 36".
Both of these steps have a rise/drop of 8", will work with an entry height range of 27" - 36", and can support up to 400-lbs. view full answer...
When measuring your doorway to select the correct steps you will need to measure from flange to flange, not the entire doorway. Since you get a measurement of 28-1/2" flange to flange, the correct steps will be the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps # LC791572 which fit doorway widths of 25" - 28-7/8" and height of 27" - 36". Not the # LC791573 which would be too wide for your doorway. view full answer...
If you are looking to upgrade the steps on your RV with something like the Lippert SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps # LC791573, as an example, there is indeed an option for a storage box that will sit in place of the old steps. This will be dependent on the size of the area however, as the # LC791573 steps will fit a doorway that measures 29" to 36" wide and the SolidStep Locking RV Storage Box # LC664640 measures 27-1/4" long and 11-5/16" deep. With that being said, if you don't mind altering... view full answer...
If you have retractable steps like the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps # LC791573 and are adding the The Camco RV Adjustable Screen Door Deluxe # CAM43993, you would need 1/4"-3/8" of clearance at the bottom of the door to the threshold in order for the steps to work properly.
If these are not the steps, let me know what you have and I will be happy to see what I can do to help and find out more information if needed. view full answer...
Since your doorway width and threshold height is both 29 inches the Lippert SolidSteps you'd need would be the part # LC791573 which matches that perfectly. If the bubble on your level is with the two lines like you mentioned then your trailer would be level enough. view full answer...
/-Lippert recommends measuring the inside width of the door frame and rounding up to the nearest even number doorway width for their SolidSteps like the part # LC791573 you mentioned. This is designed for 30-36 inch wide doorways. The next step down doorway width is the part # LC791572 which is for 26 to 29-7/8 inch wide doorways. I can help you find the correct Lippert SolidStep for your RV, and it will just take a few measurements.

We do indeed have some Lippert SolidStep fold down steps that will work with a 36 inch wide door frame. For a 2 step unit, use # LC733932 which works with a 22-28 inch entry height. For a 3 step unit, use # LC791573 for a 27-36 inch entry height or # LC791575 for a 4 step unit for 35-44 inch heights. view full answer...
You can always use a smaller width step if you have to, so the # LC791574 would still work. A lot of times people have things in the way like a cabinet door or fire extinguisher that prevents them from folding the steps back up into the RV so they end up having to use a smaller width step.
If you want the maximum width step for a 29" doorway then you can use the following steps:
