Note: Do not load weight on the section of crossbar that extends past the towers.
The Malone SteelTop roof rack lets you carry gear and accessories on the roof of your vehicle with raised, factory side rails. This complete roof rack system includes 2 steel, square crossbars and 4 towers. The bars are compatible with most universal, clamp-on accessories and carriers, and the towers have built-in locks to protect the rack from theft. The rack clamps onto your raised side rails and tightens down with the included tool, so it's easy to remove and install.
Strong, Steel Crossbars
The durable crossbars are made of steel and have a black vinyl coating to protect them from corrosion and keep them looking new. The bars also have plastic endcaps to protect the interiors from the elements and to give your roof rack a finished look.
Durable Towers with Built-In Security
The towers are made of molded nylon that won't fade or wear down when exposed to the elements. Each tower includes a nylon cover with a built-in lock to deter would-be thieves from removing the rack from your roof. The covers also protect the towers' interior and hardware from the elements.
Easy Installation with Rubber-Coated Steel Clamps
The towers attach to your vehicle's raised, factory side rails with rubber-coated steel clamps. The rubber coating provides a superior grip on your side rails and protects them from damage during installation and use.
To tighten, simply turn the bolt inside the tower assembly with the included installation tool until the clamps are snug.
Rubber spacer blocks are included to fit smaller side rails. If the clamps don't tighten enough to your side rails, just slide a spacer block onto the clamps before tightening them.
Once assembled, the towers and crossbars stay together as one unit, which makes removing, storing, and reinstalling the system a snap. To remove, simply remove the cover and loosen the bolts inside the towers with the installation tool.

This complete roof rack system mounts to your vehicle with raised, factory side rails. Full-length square crossbars work with most clamp-on carriers and accessories. Vinyl-coated steel bars are corrosion resistant. Includes locks to deter theft. These 50” rack and risers fit as advertised on our 2017 MiniCooper Clubman with use of the clamp adapter. Just finished testing them to transport two bikes up, over and back across the Appalachian Mts on both steep backwoods roads and open highway with zero problems. Unrelated to this product, I had a comparability problem with my Yakima bike rail clamps that are smaller than the roof racks diameter and require some finagling which others might not be able to make work. So check on clamp size comparability if these are to replace an existing Yakima roof carrier system. Again, this is not an etrailer product critique!
Ordering Cross Rails from etrailer was an Easy Experience. Even when I ordered the wrong size, they walked me through whole experience when returning and reordering via email. Doing business with them was stress free and easy! The cross rails fit perfectly.
Installed easily on my 2015 GMC Acadia. They’re solid - when I try to shake the rack by pushing & pulling on it the truck shakes instead!
Got my roof rack on the day I was promised. Took me about 10 minutes to install on my 2005 Ford Sport trac. They look good and mounted very securely. The price was right compared to [others] so far love the product. Thanks etrailer and to George and Steve.
3 star is for the product, but I should mention that eTrailer.com got 5 STAR for the service.
Now to the product:
Pro: Easy to install, light weight and seem strong/durable.
Con: wind noise
At 40mph the noise/whistling sound came in, and above 60mph is noticeably loud.
I don't have anything to compare, since this is the first crossbar I've installed.
I will try to move the bar around and see if it makes any difference.
The good thing is I can remove this crossbar (and it's easy and quick to do it) and just put it on when I need them, and therefore I'm keeping it. But I don't think I would recommend it to anyone, especially if they own the same car like mine, because maybe this just a car issue, many other reviewer shares good experience with it.
I will update this review if I can improve on the wind noise.
These Malone cross bars are an excellent value in terms of quality and ease of installation and use. We chose the least expensive model that was compatible with our particular vehicle and they turned out to be exactly what we needed. Our vehicle happens to be a Volvo XC-90, but by design this model would likely fit most vehicles with factory side rails. I prefer square bars myself rather than aero bars because they work better for a large variety of loads, they cost much less, and for the way they will be used in our case (to carry a large roof basket for camping and other outdoor activities), the minimal loss in fuel efficiency of square bars does not justify the cost difference with other designs. Finally, the most important part of this review is regarding the etrailer customer service which is equally excellent, and a key point if you have never ordered from this company before. My family has ordered other items over the years such as a tow hitch for a Prius, and later on a bike rack for that particular hitch, we and have always experienced very good service. In this case with the roof cross bars, Nancy B. and George J. helped us very swiftly resolve a shipping issue which resulted in damage to the product when we received it the first time around. No big deal, things happen, however they corrected it immediately by providing a return label, and I appreciate their very good service most of all.
Roof rack was easy to install and seems substantial. I haven't carried anything on it yet. The only thing I don't like is how it makes a roar sound when traveling at high speed. Was wondering if there is placement recommendations to minimize the noise.
Still works as advertised. Bike rack still hasn’t fallen off after a year and several thousand miles- so I guess that’s a five star rating.
I purchased Malone Roof crossbars for my 2014 Kia Sedona minivan. Installation was quick and secure. Very happy with the strength so far. I will be using it with a Roof basket and luggage bag on our trip from Florida to Tennessee.
So far so good, a little wind noise but I was used to it within a day. Doesn’t bother me just alert your passengers so they are not startled when in the car.
They took a bit of time to figure out because I kept trying to snap them into place but you don’t need to do that. If you sit them in place as much as possible, start tightening the screw and it will pop itself into place. After they were tightened, I pulled down just a bit to make sure they are locked tight.
Overall super quick delivery!
One downfall was only with the delivery but that is bc of USPS. It was raining and the mail person left the box on the porch in the rain vs 3 inches further under the overhang.
Etrailer was great!!!!
They fit my 4Runner great. Perfect fit. But box end was completely torn off—was taped closed with clear tape—all pieces included. Will install permanently in the morning
The crossbars I recieved from etrailer worked out great. They will help us add space for our family vacation. The customer service I received from Ashley was top of the line as well. I called on a Thursday night and asked if I could possibly get it by the following Wednesday and she said I should recieve the crossbars no later than Tuesday. That was perfect for me. On Saturday I received a message saying my order has arrived. How about that for service! I will definitely use etrailer again.
I do know they were not new with I believe were only minor blemishes .The condition was a bit below that description the vinyl cover for the bars were roken and about 6" of vinyl missing. I was able to repair with extra material I had. They are installed and I won't return them
Have not had a chance to use them yet, but they are installed and that part was easy. Simple but seem like they will be secure/functional. I liked that the website helped me pick racks that would fit on my specific car with my specific roof set up.
The product showed up with both boxes open and damaged..
Cost wise seems great - if your roof rails are higher off the roof than those of a 2017 VW Golf Sportwagen, then this should work.
If not - then this will dent your roof just being installed.
Easily installed, sturdy well-made rack, great price. This rack is 2" wider than a 4' sheet of plywood making it ideal for transporting sheet goods. It will also be great to carry ladders which I do frequently for painting. Because it is a Malone brand it will pair perfectly with my Malone 2 kayak rack, (also a great product, but that's another review!)
my boyfriend said it was very very easy to install compared to the last cross bar we have. It seems very sturdy too. Fit our 2017 Toyota RAV4 perfectly.
I rarely give five stars so four is fitting here. It’s good! A good buy and a good product. Very easy to put on. Anyone can do it. Took me under ten minutes from unpacking to install. I like the lock feature. Very sturdy, obviously this is on a Subaru so I’m not going to load ten sheets of plywood on it lol but I’ll be putting a basket on them soon.
I just received the package. The container was broken and I am not sure if the racks are complete. See pics below.
Solid bars, no rattling, no issues, have had on the vehicle for a year. Left the bars on for the winter but took off the bike racks I had mounted on them. Still look and feel good, will put up the bike rack as needed.
There is some wind noise but that's pretty minor and is not an issue for me.
The assembly was very easy and didn't need the instructions to put them on my Subaru Crosstek. Only down side is the wind noise and don't want to get the deflector because I fear the parts that touch the roof would eventually wear the paint off. I wanted something to keep on the roof so I don't have to keep removing it, but due to the ease of assembly and disassembly I might try it out for awhile. I cut the allen wrench down so it would fit in the chuck of my cordless drill to speed up the process.
I picked these roof racks to support the width of my roofbox. The OEM roofbars that came with my 2017 Toyota Rav4 did not have a wide enough bar space to support my bars, nor did they have a load capacity instilling much confidence.
These bars are excellent. They're simple, straight forward, support a bunch of weight, all with one major downside. There is an insane amount of wind noise. If i don't have a box on the bars, there is a terribly loud howling at any speed over 40. To remedy this, I just leave a bungee cord wound around the front bar when I don't have a load on there. It's irritating, but it does the job. I'd advise getting the aero bars instead. They're supposed to have much less road noise, and they're not much more in cost.
Rack was priced right and is compatible with any accessory I've thrown on it. Used with factory running rails on two different cars: a 2005 Subaru Impreza wagon and a 2013 VW Jetta Sportwagen. I like how they lock and I'm 100% confident they will stay secure. Only negative really is noise but that will be the same with any square rack. Get an aerodynamic rack if you are driving expressways a lot. Even in the diesel which has more sound muting than a normal car these things sing at 80mph.
Extremely easy installation, that took no more than 10 minutes from start to finish, including measuring.
