Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack Crossbars Review

What's going on, everybody Adam here, with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the line of Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty crossbars. These are heavy duty crossbars. They are not really like your basic roof racks, that you may see on our website. These are kind of in their own little class. This is gonna be for you construction guys out there, carrying a bunch of lumber or ladders, but also it's a great candidate for a rooftop tent.

If you're watching the video, you're probably wanting a roof rack that's gonna do the most out of all the ones that we carry here at etrailer. So, these are gonna get the job done. It's not gonna be like some of the other ones that we have, the arrow bars, the round bars, square bars. These are a lot thicker. So, a lot of the wrap around accessories that you may have already, might not work with this bar, but this is mainly for some of the bigger stuff that you're hauling, whether you're just hauling lumber, or you're just this construction guy, looking to get some stuff up on your roof.

But, if you are maybe a tent guy, this is gonna be great for the tents, as it has a 220 pound capacity, super, super beefy, and it is going to work with your C-channel accessories. Don't get that confused with T-slot. This is only gonna be accepting the C-channel accessories that we have on our website. As far as dimensions go, we are gonna have about two inches from the bottom to the top, with height. And that is just taking into consideration this little rubber strip right here.

So, just for your wraparound accessories, make sure it's gonna be able to go all the way around that. And, the width is gonna be about 1 5/8 of an inch. It does come in silver as you see here, but if you like the color black more, we do have them in black as well. These are the 50 inch bars, but we have a lot of other ones. You can go down to 44 inch bars, or you can go all the way up to 78 inch bars.

And, there is a couple of different stops in between. I always like bringing my bike with me, so having that up on the roof is always a plus, just gives me something to do whenever I'm bored, and out on the trails. Another thing I like to do, if there's water where I'm going, I always like to bring my kayaks, so you can get like a little wrap-around pad like this. And the majority of them, if not all of them, will fit. And the nice thing about this, if you have a fishing kayak, the bars are so heavy duty to where you can put a little pad like this, and get your really heavy fishing kayaks up and to wherever you wanna go. Now, we've got the sup on top. We have the bike with it. So, now we're pretty much ready to do whatever, whether we wanna bike, or sup around, we have everything up on our roof, and it's ready to rip. One thing I wish I would have done, is grabbed longer bars. I only have about a couple of inches beyond here, and I can't really put anything else on there. If I did go with something a little bit bigger, I'd love to put a awning on the side, just because if I'm doing either of these, I'm gonna get hot, and it's nice to get out of the shade. Our bars are gonna have a nice rubber strip on top, and it is pretty beefy. So, if you do just end up laying this up on top of the bars, it's not gonna be making contact with the metal. And this is a metal bar made of aluminum, so if you are on the coast, supping or kayaking, anything like that, the saltwater isn't gonna corrode this away. So, it's gonna look just as good as it does now, for years to come. To give you an idea of how much height we're adding to the top of our rails, from the top of our rails, to the very top of the bar, it's gonna be about 2 3/4 of an inch. But, if you wanna see if it's going to work with your sunroof, panoramic roof, whatever you may have, from the top of our bar to the bottom of this bar, it's gonna be about 3/4 of an inch. We just wanted to give you an idea of what it looks like when nothing is loaded up. It does pretty well with the RAV4's raised side rails. It kinda matches, which is kinda cool. But, if you wanna see how we install it, if you stick around, we're gonna show you. First thing you wanna do, is familiarize yourself with the bar. So, we're gonna have two different channels. One's gonna be a little bit deeper than the other, and that's gonna be where the little rubber strip is. And then obviously, the upper little section's gonna be a little shallower. That's where the feet are going to go into, which is what we're installing. Today, we're gonna be using the clamp-around style feet, because we have raised side rails on our RAV4. But, if you have a naked roof, there is another foot kit you could use. It's gonna use the fixed mounting points on your naked roof, to get them secured down. So, you have two different options when it comes to feet, and that all depends on your roof. Just take this little bolt, and we wanna loosen it up by your hands, make sure it's just right at the edge there, so it can pop up like this. And then, we can slide that in a little track on our bar. And, we wanna make sure that the outside is gonna be facing the outside, of course. Line this up, and slide it in just like that. You can tighten it up a little bit, but we will have to adjust these a little bit, when they get up on our bar. And once we have that done, what you should do, is kind of pinch these together, and then loosen these up to where these are gonna be a little bit to the end, kinda like that. And this way, we're gonna be able to open up this clamp a little bit wider, so it'll sit on our rails a lot easier. So, now we're ready to put the bar on our raised rails. See how it just fits in there. So, I could have probably opened that up a little bit more, but that is what the tool's for. So if it's doing this, just take your tool and loosen those two bolts that we loosened up earlier, we're just gonna need a little bit more to get it to sit down, just like that. Be a good time to get the measuring tape out, make sure it's nice and even on both sides. And, then we can take that same tool. As we tighten these up, it's gonna bring in that other clamp, which is gonna secure it down. I like to just kind of do it really lightly for the first amount on both sides, just so it's nice and even, and then you can start really torquing it down to get it secured. You wanna make sure they're both even, just like that. Then once it's all secured down, give her a good tug, make sure she's set in place, and we can do that same exact thing on the other side. The cool thing about the tool, it's gonna let you know when it's torqued down properly. So, as we start to torque this down, we're gonna take this little edge here, and once it starts to go straight, meaning this curve, once we tighten it down, it's gonna start to give a little bit, and that's gonna let us know that it is torqued down to spec. So, that's always awesome, because half the time you never really know if it's too much or too little, but as you can see, it's straight, and that is as tight as we need to go. You can do that on both sides. And then, we can go ahead and take our end caps. So, these two little pegs here, are gonna go in these little slots. So, we'll kinda just line that up. You have to give them a decent amount of force, kinda just knock it on there, just like that. And we are good with the ball. Once you figured out that we have an even amount of overhang on each side, that bolt, that's underneath, what we can do is take a 14 millimeter socket, and tighten that down. Once we have both of our bars secured down, and they're nice and tight, we can go ahead and load up our favorite accessories. And that will do it for a look at the Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty crossbars, and I'm Adam, with etrailer..

This loader is amazing...I easily load a 4' x 14' Sunfish sailboat at 120lbs easily without damaging my 2005 Nissan Armada...super sturdy...exactly as advertised. Note:. I order the extra heavy bar and did not need it! Now I take my sailboat with me while I pull my travel trailer. You won't be disappointed. Etrailer ROCKS IN CUSTOMER SERVICE...THEY HUNTED DOWN ALL INFO NEEDED TO MAKE THE PURCHASE...give DENA W a big raise!!!!!!

Nice rack system, strong and durable. Used on a Ford e350 to mount solar panels. Only draw back, one of the L brackets that goes under the rain gutter was not bent square enough and this caused the bracket to slide off when tightened. I had to adjust this with a clamp and hammer, no issues since.

Review from a similar Heavy-Duty in Roof Rack

I bought Rhino-Rack Heavy Duty Crossbars because they are made to support Rhino-Rack products, including the Batwing Awning I had purchased for a RAM Promaster High Roof van. The crossbars work very well with the awning. However, I have discovered that Rhino-Rack does not provide a solution to attach non-Rhino-Rack products directly to the crossbars. For example, solar panels. There are fixed attachment points for racks on a Promaster. The distance between the crossbars is greater than the length of my solar panels. So I need to attach side rails to my crossbars for mounting my solar panels. Rhino-Rack does not offer side rails that can be attached to the crossbars. They only make baskets and brackets for specific items. They recommend going to licensed installers to get side rails installed. But I could not find an installer who is willing to help. They don't want the hassle and/or they don't want to jeopardize their standing with Rhino-Rack. So, I am left with having to come up with a solution on my own. Very frustrating.

eTrailer is always very helpful and tried their best to find a solution for me. But they were stymied, too.

If you just need Rhino-Rack Crossbars for other Rhino-Rack products, they are great. If you want to carry other manufacturer's products, look for something else.

Tricky to rivet tracks onto car with a manual riveter but once done, a great solution for the car with ease of bar removal. My only regret was going with the square bars which result in notable increase in wind noise.

Kit was great, except my SnugTop cover
required longer T-Bolts for mounting the tracks. The 1.5 inch ones provided were too short. It was a little tough sourcing T/Bolts that would work. It would have been nice if longer T-Bolts could have been an option from Rhino Rack.

Ok… giving this item four stars as an overall view. The good: it fits a Jeep Wrangler perfectly. With the appropriate legs, it canvases across the entire roof of the Jeep with the legs attaching to the gutters. The bad: just a bit too noisy for my liking, even with the appropriate wind faring (I don’t expect absolute silence since I have a one touch sky top). The noise is not a big deal on short trips, but it was definitely driving my wife and kids nuts on a 2+ hour drive (stick some headphones on the kids, problem fixed)

In the future, I might switch it up from these square rails and go with something a bit more aerodynamic…

The good thing is the feet you already have fit the aero bars. When you want to upgrade, all you would need to get is item # RRVA150B-2
Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 59" Long - Qty 2
$190.00
. I would check your set up to ensure that the rubber strip is all of the way pressed in. If the channel is open to the wind, it will whistle.

This rack works perfectly on my Nissan Versa for carrying my two Perception Sound 9'6" kayaks. The Rhino-Racks look good to me. The kayaks can rest directly on the rubber pads on the rails, unlike the Yakama racks I had in the past that had bare pipe rails. Also, I expect I can buy parts to adapt this product to a different car without having to buy new towers. I am sorry there are not hooks or loops to attach bungees when carrying lumber. They are noisy in the wind, but less so when carrying the kayaks.

This has been a disaster, and terrible experience from the start. Original product Rhino roof rack ($188.00) misrepresented for sale, even called and was told all parts were included as "Open Box" item. Received item with missing parts and mismatched parts, then ET sent wrong parts (Legs) causing having to order these cross bars ($192.00) to fit parts sent (Legs). Now my $300.00 BougeRV ski rack - mounting base plates won't fit the crossbars. Still waiting for return label for original item so I can get my refund of $188.00. Three weeks later, still dealing with problem. I do appreciate Shawnee and EDW for their efforts in follow up service attempts.

Review from a similar Heavy-Duty in Roof Rack

I mounted these racks on my Transit Connect about a year ago and have to say that I’m quite happy with them. Easy to mount and they are weathering well.

I tie down all sorts of things to these racks that won’t fit in the van. I would have given them a higher rating if they had come with a better way to attach straps or bungee’s. I’ve “McGivered” my own ways to make that work.

Im now looking at an awning to go with these. I’ll probably get another Rhino-Rack product, they seem to be pretty well made.

Thanks

Amazing product. Fit, finish, quality is absolutely amazing!
Have hauled our bikes all over MI, through the UP, and back. They never moved. Rack is super simple to remove from the rails to grant full access to the PU bed.
I think this is one of the Best options out there for taking your bikes with you while still having your covered bed space. I also can install a Ski box for the winter. Ski's in the box while gear in the covered bed.

These are the perfect racks for a low profile mounting of solar panels on my Sprinter van.

Comments
Hi Mike, I was researching roof racks for my 2013, 170 tall Sprinter Van ordered and I came across your post. I have a Yakima rack that I had on my old BMW that I was thinking of using until I saw your post. Did you install your own rack and solar panels? I was thinking of paying a local RV custom place, near here, to do all this work, but Im leaning to doing a lot of it myself. If you installed all the gear on top of your van, I have a bunch of questions:1 Ive order factory roof rails for my Sprinter, did you simply place the Rhino tracks inside the rail grooves and how did you bolt them down?2 What are the other accessories I see on top: Fan, Solar panels make$, A/C, Sat? Did you install all yourself, if so, was it difficult?3 Awning: What type and difficulty/cost of installation? 4 What are small devices on roof: white knob type device right lower on picOn left side of pic, front to back: white, flush 6disc, black protruding 6 knob, 6 flush, black, controller type box. Again, if you didnt install, who did and a what cost? Thxs for your patience!Joe

I am normally a exclusive Amazon shopper, but etrailer gives equal or better service and has specialty items you just can't find anywhere else. The pricing is great also. This is my 4th order from them on this project and the response has been perfect and the shipping has been prompt. They even offered to take back an item that I did not need. I desperately wanted to mount my 19ft Kayak on my new RV and with some Rhino RT tracks, a Rhino Nautic kayak lifter, a few really heavy duty rivets, and some ingenuity, I was able to accomplish the task. I am replacing the current Nautic bars with the heavy duty bars. See the attached pictures.

Excellent customer service, all current manufacturers for this type of equipment is not available for purchase because Yakima, Thule, even Rhino Rack did mention from customer service representatives from these 3 companies states you are better off purchasing from a distributor such as E-trailer. This company definitely had the transfer equipment from a Yakima support base to a Rhino Rack crossbar system. I needed the additional load weight and Jaime from E-Trailer was extremely patient and helpful…seriously awesome customer service…also my package came 2 days earlier in this truck driver shortage too. Job well done.

High-quality, sturdy rails, but noisy. There was a pronounced and audible whistle driving with these racks at any common road or highway speed (with the rubber inserts installed across the top). I have since replaced these rails with the Rhino vortex aero style (change of vehicles and the HD bars did not fit the new car). Having used both types several times, I would recommend the aero style over the HD if you have the option.

I have used yakima for years and have no complaints. Rhino is far superior for strength, fit and install.
If you are creative you can use uni-strut nuts for your own mounting solutions that may not be offered by rhino.
A flat surface is much easier to work with and is more secure than a round surface. I cant see myself buying a round tube product again.

After a year of ownership I still like the rack a lot. The rubber strip is holding up great. The only thing I would improve is to make the rack slightly longer by like 2 inches or so on each side so the if I put a sheet of plywood up there its easier to hook a strap underneath. its 48 wide, and plywood is 48 wide.

Very HD, no worries at all regarding ability to carry weight safely. Rubber track keeps things from sliding, great stuff. 4 stars rather than 5 because one bar arrived with a large scratch down the side. They’re compensating with $20, but it is worth $90, so if I eventually need to replace because of oxidation, I’m up a creek…

love it, no problem and easy to install and take on and off, 47,000 miles on the highway and not a single issue. I even like the song the ladder hums to me driving down the interstate. This is my second Rhino and both have preformed to a high standard.
