Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.


Once the Tow-Pro Elite is mounted, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.


Tow-Pro Elite Operation

The dash-mountable control knob makes it easy to control your trailer's brakes. In addition to offering fast, simple power adjustment, this knob has an LED indicator that changes color to display different information about the controller.


Redarc Tow Pro Elite Proportional LED Display

While the unit is initially calibrating, the LED light will signal its progress. The LED display will flash green/blue as it seeks to take in information about your vehicle's direction and speed. When the display turns solid blue, the system is set and functioning completely in proportional mode. After this process is complete, the unit will remain calibrated for the next time that you tow. If recalibration is required, it will happen automatically and without LED indication.


You can use the knob to set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, this power is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the switch clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.


Redarc Tow Pro Elite Brake LED Intensity

When you apply the tow vehicle's brakes, a red LED light will inform you that power is being sent back to the trailer brakes. As you increase the power with the control knob, the light will glow brighter, indicating the increased braking power.


Should you want a higher degree of control over the trailer's braking, you can use the control knob to switch over to user-controlled braking mode. To change modes, rotate the knob counterclockwise and apply your vehicle's brakes. Then push down on the remote knob twice (2 times within 1 second) and release the brakes.


Redarc Tow Pro Elite User Controlled LED Signal

User-controlled mode is signaled by a green LED. In this mode, the Tow-Pro Elite will apply your trailer's brakes with the same preset amount of power each time you activate the brakes in your vehicle. While in user-controlled mode, the braking power can be adjusted by turning the control knob in the same manner as when you are in proportional mode.


Having this level of control over your braking is particularly beneficial when overlanding or towing a trailer off-road because you may need to alter the trailer's braking based on the specific terrain and situation that you find yourself in. Set the power low if you're towing through sand or mud so that the trailer doesn't stop with too much force and act as an anchor on your vehicle. When on a steep descent, set the power to a higher level to ensure that the trailer's momentum doesn't cause it to push against the tow vehicle.


The Tow-Pro Elite gives you easy access to manually apply the trailer brakes without using the tow vehicle's brakes. To engage the manual override, just push down on the control knob. This will activate the trailer's brakes, helping you to control its momentum.


The manual override will activate your trailer's brakes differently depending on the mode you have selected. While in user-controlled mode it will apply the brakes at the power level set on the control knob to ensure a predictable braking response. When in proportional mode the manual override will activate the trailer brakes in a light manner, which is great for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.


Simple, Out-of-the-Way Installation

Unlike most proportional controllers on the market, the Tow-Pro Elite has almost no mounting restrictions. It comes in 2 pieces - the main electronic unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted in an out-of-the-way location. So you no longer have to worry about a bulky brake controller scraping against your leg or causing interference with your vehicle's lower airbags.

The dash-mountable control knob can be mounted in a convenient spot that is easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open area on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard. A universal mounting panel is included to ensure a clean, from-the-factory look. Custom-fit panels are available for certain vehicles as well.


REDARC Tow Pro Elite Flexible Installation Position

Once you have determined where to mount the control knob, you will want to find a good place to install the main unit. The only mounting restriction for the unit is that the included 3' plug-in cable is able to reach between the main unit and the knob.


Thanks to the 3-axis accelerometer, the main unit can be positioned at any angle. There is also an active calibration feature, which constantly evaluates the direction of travel of your vehicle. This enables the unit to recognize any change in position that may have resulted from potholes or back-country roads and automatically correct itself. Because this feature can read the direction of travel, the main unit can also be mounted facing any direction, allowing for even greater flexibility in mounting.


REDARC Tow Pro Elite Harness

The included wiring harness hardwires into your vehicle's wiring and then plugs directly into the main unit. You can also use a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to cut down on installation time. These harnesses are available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom harness will plug into your vehicle, and the other end will hardwire onto the Tow-Pro harness that plugs into the main unit. Once all connections are made, securely mount the box using screws or double-sided tape. Do not zip-tie the box to wiring or cables that can shift as you drive.

I’m going to be up front and say I have not tested this beside driving around town. The install was very quick, maybe 20 minutes in all initially in my 2017 Nissan Titan SV. I do have some concerns though. After install I had no lights to show calibration was going on. From reading the user manual I guess that can happen. First time hooking up the trailer everything seemed fine and the light was blue as it should. Once I turned my running lights on though it began to blink red showing a fault with the cable. I tested everything to make sure it was getting voltage and the wires were correct. After about an hour I found something between my backup camera on the travel trailer and the brake was causing some sort of issue. I removed the camera, unplugged all the cables from the tow pro elite and hooked it back up. Once plugged back in it showed green and blue lights showing it was calibrating. I drove the trailer around town and our relief route. After about half an hour the light turned solid blue. The control is easy to use and looks very nice. I’m unable to get it to switch to user control mode but the proportional and manual brakes works fine. I will update my review after we take it out on a few trips. As of now it seems like a great product, very clean looking and should do a great job.

I am not a seasoned towing pro, but recently had to pick up a car in San Francisco and tow it back on a flatbed trailer equipped with electronic brakes. This controller worked perfectly for me in a 2014 4Runner towing the empty trailer from Seattle to NorCal and then the loaded trailer back to Seattle. Installation was easy thanks to the videos on the etrailer site.

Working under the dash was confining. I would say make sure you test the break switch wiring for the cold side! Mine wasn't the white wire with the red stripe. The only thing that required a slight modification was the switch assembly. The 2020 Ascent spare switch holders are convex. This took some fenagling to get it to set somewhat flush. One other challenge I had was the switch position in the 2020 Ascent is vertical not horizontal in the video. This made it difficult to get the probe into the connector for testing. As I stated earlier the testing is essential! Overall happy with the process.

Shockingly, there are only two manufacturers who make remote mount brake controllers: Redarc and Curt. However, despite this lack of competition, Redarc has set a very high bar. My initial impression of this brake controller is very good. It took a few minutes of driving to calibrate, but once it finished the trailer braking became very smooth. My only complaint so far (if you can call it that) is that the rate at which the brake gain increases (relative to increases in vehicle braking) seems a bit odd. In my opinion the gain starts off too low (i.e. when I'm lightly pressing the brake pedal, it seems like the tow vehicle is doing the majority of the braking), and then finishes off too high (i.e. when I'm firmly pressing the brake pedal, it seems the trailer is doing the majority of the braking). (And this happens with the the brake intensity dial in the same position for both scenarios.) However, I must admit that I am new to electric trailer brakes, and I can see that perhaps this behavior may be desirable. Everything else about this controller is as expected. NOTE: Please make sure to get the switch blank insert for your vehicle! It is SOLD SEPARATELY. The one that comes with the brake controller is a universal style insert that requires you to drill a hole. In my review pictures, you can see that I purchased a switch insert designed specifically for late 2000s / early 2010s Toyotas. I definitely recommend doing the same.

I wanted to follow up and thank you for your help! I was able to install the Redarc brake controller with no problem! Thanks for your assistance and recommendations. One note...There are not a lot of late model Land Cruisers on the road. Toyota only sells about 3-4,000 a year so finding videos and guides for installation is a bit of a challenge. I found some FAQ's on etrailer.com but the information seemed inaccurate or at least not very helpful. I know the LC comes with a two package and is prewired but it takes some doing to locate it. I remember directions and I found some install help on another site and that helped. In any event, I appreciate your help. I have attached a photo of the installed Redarc!

I searched high and low for installs of the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite in a Class C E450 Cutaway Motorhome and couldn't find any, so I'm uploading images from my installation. I think it turned out better than I had hoped. I haven't tried it out yet, however if it works as good as it looks, I'll be impressed for sure.

The Redark trailer brake controller installed easily. In my 2020 Toyota 4Runner. It looks like it came installed from the factory. It’s small and easy to reach when driving. It came with a plastic install panel. This is designed for installing in a hole that you drill in your dash. It will not fit in a knock out space in your dash. There is one that fits the dash perfectly that you can buy from etrailer. etrailer automatically bundled the Redark trailer brake controller with the correct plug and play wiring harness for my vehicle. It was nice not to have to search for the wire harness. Everything installed perfectly. I haven’t tested the function of the brake controller yet. I’ll hook up to a trailer this week. The items arrived in less than a week and the package was in good condition. The order tracking worked great. The tech videos on the etrailer website were really helpful. I’ll purchase from hem again.

Installed onto a 2004 F-350 Super Duty, the factory connection made this a very simple install. I spent more time trying to decide where I wanted the on dash controller. So far I like the low profile look of the controller, now I just need to get my trailer to really test it out.

This is an amazing piece of technology. My camp is way up a steep dirt access rd and coming down out of camp with old controller the trailer breaks would apply to hard or not at all. This controller has a off road options where when on the breaks apply to the exact amount you turn on so the trailer breaks work every time you apply the brakes even at slow crawling speed. Just makes everything easier and the other nice part is all u see of this controller in the cab is the dime size knob.

The dashboard bezel does not fit properly. Really disappointed with this product. etrailer should not promote in install videos that this is compatable product. The bezel does not fit a 2018 4Runner dash in the factory cut out. It was extremely tight and does not snap in like the factory blank. I am sure this will rattle and or fall out. Please send the correct Toyota part. 4Runner 2018.

It appears that they changed the plastic adapter for the Controller switch. it does not work as well with the supplied switch plate. It appears that the original design had a an LED to light up the controller alignment marker(hole) in the switch plate. The new design does not, so you end up with just a hole in the switch plate with no indicator (pointer) for the dial.

Thank you for your review. Redarc did indeed change something. It is recommended not to use the grey bezel disc that is in the kit when using switch s. It seems like they improved the switch assembly and connection by taking the LED protruding light away and replacing it with a surface mount LED with transparent nut so that the LED light shines through. To install the TowPro Elite V3 you need to affix the transparent nut assembly then turn the shaft fully counterclockwise. Align the bezel zero position at the 12 o clock orientation.

Recently purchased a double axle trailer to be towed by my 2016 Explorer with the factory tow package. I needed help identifying what I needed, how well would it work and how to install it. The website helped me determine I needed a brake controller and also gave me a list of the compatible one. Each controller has associated pros and cons which helped narrow which controller would be appropriate for the purpose. Also, the website also helped pick out a wire harness which connected the controller to the vehicle. In my situation, everything was plug n play, I just needed to do some drilling and minor fabricating to mount the controller and the adjustment knob. I'm very happy with my controller, when I tow my trailer I can't feel it behind me; I credit this to the quality of the controller, having chosen the correct controller and most importantly that the controller is security mounted to the vehicle's structure so it doesn't vibrate and can accurately self calibrate.

installed in 2013 ford e350 xlt van. The plug behind the dash only provided the brake switch sensor and lights, while that helped it did not support the blue wire, as my fuse box lacked the relay reciever to enable it. So I ran 2 wires from rear to front and one extra for power to the unit from battery (much like etrailer video). the controller works excellent on my dual axle trailer and install looks clean.

This system is such an improvement over the old electric/hydraulic systems, and even the later all-electric system. I've had them all over the years, and this system is the best, and easy to install. Best of all, I can easily transfer this kit to the next vehicle at trade-in time. Easy to install, the plug and play adaptor is very recommended to assist with this. The product instructs one to drill a 1" hole to mount the control knob, this was too big and the included mounting plate did not hold well in place, I had to use double sided tape to hold it down. The controller works as described, and is very user friendly.
