Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.
Selecting a Weight-Distribution System
The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.
To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.
Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution
The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.
The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

Thoroughly torture tested between 7500 lb camper and 10500 lb trailerable a houseboat. Bought the anti-sway cams separately off [online] due to availability. Combined as a system, this stopped anti-sway and saved my butt during a hard downpour rain and side winds. The cams were the difference in pulling off to get to safety vs laying on the side of road upside down like some 18 wheeliers.
Yes, its expensive. No, you dont buy another one unless you sell it with the camper / trailer.1265673

This was my first encounter with etrailer and I have to say it was hands down the best service I have ever received! Really.. And no I don't work for etrailer!!!!!! We use to live in a country where good service was just a way of life. Today, lets face it, service is terrible! But not etrailer.. I placed an order for this product online and selected the normal shipping method by ground. I immediately got the normal email "thank you for your order". But then I got another email from an actual person, George.. George let me know the product was in their distribution facility and will ship in 24-48 hours.. To my surprise, the order shipped the same day and I received another email from a Frank stating they took the liberty of upgrading my shipping to 3 to 5 days express shipping instead of the normal 5 to 7 days at no charge to me! So my response to this was "wow great service thank you!".. Again to my surprise I received an email from a Nikki who thanked me for my positive feedback. On a side note can you believe, they actually put their direct phone with extension along their email address on the bottom of their emails so you can actually get in touch with them? I didn't think this type of stellar service existed anymore.. Kudos to etrailer.. Ok, I think I almost forgot to write about the actual product.. The product was made very well, hooked up with no issues, and when I had questions on adjustments, you guessed it, i called and emailed folks at etrailer and they actually helped me!!!! They could have sent me a box of cracker jacks and I would have given then an excellent review! :) Keep up the great work etrailer... I won't shop anywhere else for my trailer needs..122287

Truck ended up in the shop. Blown engine. We cancelled the order for the time being. Sales rep was very helpful both in helping to order the hitch and canceling the order as a result of the engine problem.
I will seriously consider reordering a hitch from etrailer. The rep was very helpful on
helping us purchase the right hitch. It was delivered at the approximate time as promised. Unfornately we had to return it as the truck is in the garage.264722

Over satisfied with the Reese Straight Line hitch!! It does everything it says it will with no question!! I had a regular Reese equalizer and got a lot of sway with my 34 foot Springdale behind my 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel, and the Reese Straight Line eliminated ALL of it!! The installation process is a little tricky but with the instructions and the video etrailer has on YouTube, it worked out just great!! Completely satisfied with the help and knowledge from etrailer!!!!269095

This is my second weight distribution hitch, which was made by Reese and the first one was used from 1993 to 2017. Although I bought the trunnion bar hitch, as it was the same type as my first hitch, there are changes in the design of the hitch, which I believe will be improvements over the older design. I'm ready to get on the road with this Reese hitch pulling my travel trailer.422720

If you are speaking of a weight distribution system that utilizes spring bars that are held in tension by chains hanging from the trailer frame, the easy way to take the tension out of the spring bar is to use the trailer jack to raise the trailer. Leave the trailer hitched to the vehicle, and use the jack to raise both the front of the trailer and the rear of the vehicle until the chain has enough slack in it for the chain hanger to be lowered. Make sure that the vehicle and trailer are... view full answer...
You will need to check with the vehicle manufacturer or your specific vehicles owners manual to get the GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) for your 2003 Ford Explorer V6. Once this is located you will need to subtract the gross weight of your vehicle fully loaded from the GCVWR and that will give you the total amount of weight the manufacturer allows for towing.
You will also need to determine the weight ratings of the hitch on your Explorer, and whether it is designed for use... view full answer...
An equalizing hitch or weight distribution can sometimes increase the capacity of the receiver hitch, but the vehicle manufacturers stated towing capacity or rating will always be the final determination of how much the vehicle can tow. Any towing system will only be as strong as its lowest rated component.
I would urge you to abide by the stated towing capacity of your truck. Failure to do so can cause the hitch to fail or damage drive train components on the vehicle. view full answer...
If the manual for your 2014 Winnebago built on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis says that towing capacity is 4,500 pounds then that is the maximum a vehicle can weigh. You will want to doublecheck the manual because there may be a different capacity for flat towing versus regular trailer towing.
If you can tell me the year, make, and model of the vehicle you wish to flat tow I can recommend the proper parts. But you will want to check the manual for the vehicle you plan to tow as well to... view full answer...
The chain hanging brackets on a weight distribution system, such as # RP66022, should be fixed and not able to move. The bars will still be able to move since they hang on chains. So basically, the movement should be at the bars and not the brackets. I have included a link to the right to our informational article on weight distribution and sway control for you. view full answer...
You ask an interesting question.
I do not know of any formalized chart or table that can capture all of the variables in play in your flat towing comparison. Apart from the vehicles' weight difference there are many other factors in play, such as wind resistance due to differing profiles (although they are pretty close to one another in this respect) and tire tread pattern, tread wear and inflation level.
In the simplest terms, if you ignore all of the other factors that could make a... view full answer...
You could have an air pocket in your coolant system that is causing the motor to run hot. To purge the air out you will want to find the steepest hill you can park your car on, let the car cool off for several minutes, remove the radiator cap and then start the car. Once the vehicle reaches operating temperate the thermostat will open and if there is a bubble in the system is should work itself out. You can also squeeze the water pump lines to help the bubble work itself out.

The Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP66022, has several points of adjustability depending on your application. The head unit can be tilted toward or away from the trailer which will raise or lower the spring bars. The head can also be adjust vertically and the spring bar chains can be adjusted. What you are looking for is a level trailer with the spring bars parallel with the trailer frame or pointed down slightly. Ideally, you will want 5 chain links between the spring bars and hanger... view full answer...
There are 2 different capacities independent of each other though related. Tongue weight is the downward force or weight on the trailer hitch. So it is pushing down at the back of the vehicle. The gross trailer weight is the weight of whatever it is you are towing. So for your motor home, at most you can tow 4,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight.
However, when flat towing a car there is almost no tongue weight because... view full answer...
I checked the owners manual for the 2003 Ford Explorer. For a 4.0 liter with the 3.55 rear end the maximum gross trailer weight is 3,300 pounds, with the 3.73 rear end it is 3,500 pounds. And if it had the factory tow package and Class III, 2 inch trailer hitch the max would be 5,820 pounds. Consult your owners manual to confirm. view full answer...
Thank you for providing a photo of your 1999 F-150's door jamb sticker. Usually the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of the truck and a hitched trailer is also shown here, along with the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - 6050-lbs in your case. Determining maximum towable trailer weight is usually then a simple matter of subtracting the GVWR from the GCWR. The difference in these two weights is the maximum trailer weight the truck can tow.
I checked a few Ford F-150 owner's forums... view full answer...
Well, I can't recommend measuring it weights since that is not how Fastway or Ford does it. So it would make it more difficult to figure it all out because then we would have to add in some sort of conversion from weight to height which might not be accurate.
We have always sais that once your weight distribution system is set up and connected the wheel well height at the front and rear should be the same or within a fraction of an inch of the unloaded height.
You don't want the front... view full answer...
The head and spring bars of your current system will need to be replaced. But the chain hangers and shank can be reused if you like. The shank is the portion of the system that slides into your hitch opening.
Your best option would be the Trunnion Reese System part # RP66022 as this kit comes without a shank and does not have the dual cam system either but would be totally compatible with your dual cam setup since it has the trunnion bars with curved ends.
Trying to piece the kit together... view full answer...
We recommend using a Weight Distribution System if your trailer weighs more than 50 percent of the tow vehicle weight. In addition to eliminating the squat experienced when the trailer is attached, a weight distribution system can lead to performance increases in steering, traction, and braking while also decreasing trailer sway. This is accomplished by the leverage provided by the spring bars which transfer a portion of the trailer tongue weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle. Weight... view full answer...
Some surge brake actuators cannot be used with weight distribution systems, but many can be safely used together. Sway control systems will make a surge brake actuator inoperable as they do not permit enough trailer movement, or they slow movement too much. You would need to select a weight distribution system like Reese part # RP66022 that does not have sway control.
Check the owner manual for the trailer or the surge brake actuator to see if it can be used with a weight distribution... view full answer...
The trunnion bars on your Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP66022, should not fall out of the head assembly when driving down the road or during normal turns. When backing the trailer or turning very sharply the bar could come loose especially if the spring bars are not very tight.
You should check the weight distribution head and trunnion head for damage and replace them if needed. You should also review your set-up instructions and make sure the attachment is correct.
I would also... view full answer...
From my research your 1997 Ford F-150 could have a maximum towing capacity up to 12,700 pounds if it's properly equipped. Exactly what your truck can pull depends on a number of factors like the engine size, transmission, and cab style. You should be able to look in your owner's manual and match up your truck's specs to see where your max is.
If for some reason you aren't sure about the specs of your truck another way to find its towing capacity is to find the gross combined weight rating... view full answer...
To install the Reese Weight Distribution System w Shank, part # RP66022, you will mount the Lift-Brackets about 30 inches back from the hitch ball. Each bracket will require about 5-1/2 inches of space along your trailer frame, and they will not fit trailer frames that are wider than 2-1/2 inches. view full answer...
Normally the towing capacity of a vehicle is in the owner's manual but I do not think Chevy put that information in for the 1991 trucks. You can check for a sticker in the driver's side door jamb. It may list gross combined weight rating (GCWR) and gross vehicle weight rating (GWR or GVWR).
Gross combined is the most that the truck and trailer can weigh together. Gross vehicle weight rating is the max amount the truck by itself can weigh. To determine the towing capacity using these 2... view full answer...
Due to the age of your system, the fact it's not rated high enough, and the fact you also need new snap up brackets your best option would be to go with new system that does not include the shank since you can easily reuse that.
So for that the Reese Trunnion Kit part # RP66022 would be what you'd want. It has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs and allows you to reuse your hitch ball and shank. view full answer...
You can tow a trailer with a weight distribution setup that does not have the spring bars connected. As long as the head of the system is attached to the shank properly (there's no reason it wouldn't be) it would work just as well as a standard adjustable ball mount. view full answer...
The weight of a trailer hitch (or weight distribution system) does not get factored as additional cargo weight or tongue weight. We've spoken with our hitch manufacturers on this a few times and they've told us that essentially the hitch and/or WD system becomes a part of the vehicle frame so it's weight does not get factored. view full answer...
Tow bars are "base plate" specific meaning that they fit certain brand and model base plate kits. So as long as you have a compatible base plate kit on the vehicle the tow bar will fit and work great.
I attached two help articles for you to check out as well. One is over Roadmaster base plate kits and the other Roadmaster tow bars. view full answer...
Weight distribution hitches are classified by the range of trailer tongue weights their spring bars are rated for.
If your current weight distribution hitch like the # RP66022 you'd looked at is rated for up to 12000 lbs, then the bars would be rated at 10% of that, which would be 1200 lbs. If the 6000 lb weight you mentioned represents the weight of the fully loaded trailer, then the tongue weight of the trailer should be somewhere in the 600-900 lbs range.
To determine if the system... view full answer...
