Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero crossbar

These low-profile, aerodynamic Vortex Aero crossbars let you build a stylish aftermarket roof rack from scratch. The crossbars require 4 Rhino-Rack legs (manufactured in 2014 or later) and a custom fit kit to mount it to your roof. Each bar extends past the roof rack legs to maximize the space for mounting carriers and accessories. Rubberized Vortex strips in each crossbar's top channel disrupt airflow for a quiet ride, and the bars are constructed of aluminum so they won't rust. The crossbars also include Secure Core endcaps with plastic locks to help deter theft of channel-mounted accessories.

Aerodynamic Design

Vortex Aero noise-reducing top channel strips

The rubberized Vortex strips in the top channel of each crossbar disrupt airflow with evenly spaced, wave-shaped grooves. This carefully controlled turbulence minimizes wind noise and whistling, so you won't need to add a fairing to your roof rack. And the slim, elliptical Vortex Aero crossbars cut through the air with minimal drag - even at highway speeds.

Strong, Durable Construction

Vortex Aero crossbar H-shaped extrusion

The Vortex Aero crossbars are made of structural-grade anodized aluminum with H-shaped internal extrusions. These extrusions strengthen the bars without adding a significant amount of weight. And the aluminum bars won't rust so you can leave them on your roof year-round.

No-Hassle Installation

Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero bottom channel ruler

Each crossbar has a channel in the bottom for mounting to Rhino-Rack roof rack legs (sold separately). Each end of the channel includes a rubber ruler to help you center the bar on your roof. Simply use the numbers and hash marks on the rulers to ensure the legs are spaced properly in the channel.

Channel-Mounted and Clamp-On Accessories

Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero crossbar top-channel strips

Each Vortex Aero crossbar has a built-in C-channel so you can carry channel-mounted accessories such as bike racks, watersport carriers, and ski racks. The Vortex strips in the top channels come in 3 pieces, so they're easier to adjust than a single long, continuous strip. You can remove, trim, and re-insert the Vortex strips around the mounting hardware of your accessories to keep the crossbar channel capped and quiet. Replacement strips (sold separately) are also available if you remove your accessories or switch to clamp-on accessories.

You can also attach most clamp-on accessories to the bars, and the Vortex strips provide a shock-absorbing, no-slip cushion for any accessories that rest on them.

Built-In Security

Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Secure Core locking endcaps

Each crossbar includes 2 Secure Core locking endcaps made of durable polypropylene. These endcaps lock with a universal tubular key. The polypropylene locks secure the endcaps to the crossbars and help to secure channel-mounted accessories to the crossbars. For maximum security, you can upgrade to endcaps with all-metal lock cores (RRVA-LEC4 - sold separately).

I purchased the complete 2500 Series system which included the crossbars, legs and fit kit for my 2018 Honda Fit so I could transport my kayak.. They were well packaged and their quality is quite evident. I did struggle a little following the assembly instructions but with some patience and watching a video it went well. Two items to be aware of. The front and rear leg clamps are of different lengths with the longer clamps going on the rear crossbar. The other issue was positioning the crossbars. After following the measurements for attaching the legs to the crossbars it was quite clear that the measurement for the rear crossbar was wrong. Placing the legs as instructed didn't allow the rear crossbars to be the 29 17/32 inches from the front crossbar but required me to move it back to 31 1/2 inches. There is a very faint whistle while driving around 30 to 35 mph but it's not annoying. I was so pleased with the fit and finish I went ahead and purchased the Rhino Rack S-loader to make it easier for me to lift my kayak onto the crossbars. I would definitely recommend both items.

Lexus IS 250

This roof rack works great! At first I was skeptical about putting a rack on my IS250, but it couldn't have turned out better. Paired with the Yakima Highroad, I can easily transport my bikes around without worrying about anything coming loose while driving. The installation instructions for the legs and bars are pretty straightforward. Takes about 30-45 minutes total to install.

by:

Exactly what I needed to replace the factory cross bars to make it easier to take off my roof top tent. Easy to install and secured nicely to the factory rails.

Choosing a system for transporting my new (to me, they're actually used) kayaks was TOUGH. I love my little 2017 Honda Fit, and I knew I would love my new kayaks when I got them. I don't want anything bad to happen to either! Also, my car is small and the kayaks are fairly large, comparatively. I've strapped a lot of things to a lot of vehicles, but this is going to be a long term relationship, so I wanted to get it right the first time.

I've been researching and reading reviews for months, but I got confirmation that the kayaks were ready for pickup, so I needed to make a decision! I ultimately pulled the trigger on the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars with the 2500 Series Legs and Custom DK Fit Kit for my naked roof car and the Rhino-Rack Nautic Stack Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs.

I placed my order on 09/15/21 at 6 PM. The estimated delivery date was 09/23/21, which made me a little sad. I really wanted to pick up my boats on Sunday, 09/19/21, but I figured I'd waited THIS long, I could probably handle waiting another week. I was very pleasantly surprised to receive an email at 8 PM the same evening notifying me that my order had shipped. AND, even better, the UPS tracking was showing delivery on 09/18/21 by 7PM! I was beyond excited, but didn't get my hopes up because shipping has been pretty hit or miss since well before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, UPS delivered my package just before noon on Saturday, which was amazing!

I got everything unpacked and reviewed to ensure that I had all I would need to assemble the system - check. Nothing missing, which is always an auspicious start. Then I started reading the instructions - UGH. This is (so far) the ONLY thing I have to complain about. I have put together IKEA furniture that had clearer instructions. I probably should have gone to Google to find a YouTube video, but I powered through with the instructions provided. Since I've never put together or used a roof rack before, I didn't really know what the final outcome should look like, so that made interpreting the instructions very difficult - the pictures were not super clear, and the accompanying text did not improve the situation. Now that I know what it looks like assembled, I get it, but at the time it was rough. I estimated it took me about 2 hours to get the rack assembled and secured to my car, and towards the end my fiancé arrived and helped me to realize that the foot pads were not properly attached to the feet, which made a huge difference! The kayak carrier was much easier to install, taking maybe 15 additional minutes.

The foot pads rest in the groove on the edge of the roof, I assume over the frame of the car. There's absolutely no flex in the roof where the feet sit. The hook part of the clamp rests against the metal of the car, under the rubber seal, so I don't foresee any potential issues with the seal as a result of the rack. The doors close as normal, and the rack has no movement whatsoever once tightened down. I've now used it as a handle to pull myself up towards the roof a few times (I'm about 190 lbs), and I feel totally confident that it's not going anywhere. I now have ideas about how to use the rack to haul around the larger stuff that won't fit INSIDE my car (which isn't much - I HIGHLY recommend this car!).

So, the big question - how'd it go with the kayaks?

In short - perfection! I was slightly concerned about the boats overhanging the front or back of my car, as they're 12.5 ft long and my car is just over 13 ft long. Eeeeek! I needn't have worried. They fit like a dream, and even without bow or stern tie downs were very secure during our trip home. We took local roads instead of the highway because we didn't tie down the bow and stern, so we probably didn't go over 40 ish MPH, but I saw absolutely no lift (I can see the ends of the boats out of the front windshield). I will be using those tie downs in the future, and anticipate no issues with highway speeds under those conditions.

Obviously, only time will tell how everything holds up/works out, but at this stage, I am extremely pleased with my decision and am looking forward to many kayaking adventures to come! I only have one picture at this point, but may take a few more and add them so anyone else considering a similar setup knows what they'll be getting.

Love the bars, I had gotten the other rack parts from different suppliers. I love the look and sleek design of the Rhino Rack. I did the 2500 vortex on a 2016 Subaru Impreza sedan and it fits great and looks even better.

Great rack and great deal, I've been able to use the rack on more than one car by replacing just some parts.

by:

Not totally quiet but better than some others! They have a nice rubber strip down the middle that act as a cushion and grip so the kayaks don’t immediately slide off when you remove the straps. Great quality as well!

2017 Lexus IS 300

Oh ya. awesome low profile rack. Making it look real nice, just order a wind fairing to lower the wind noises.

by:

These racks are great. I looked at so many and finally decided to go with these and very glad I did. The quality is great, not hard to put together, and not too loud. Although, sunroof open would cause bugs to fly in after bouncing off these so don’t do that.

5 stars. Use these every summer. Take them off and on by myself and have never had any issue with them. Still happy as ever with my purchase.

This was a great option for our 2013 Toyota Corolla! Install was fairly easy, some directions could be made a little clearer but overall was easy and the rack has stayed on firm and secure since install over a month ago.

I am missing at least 2 of the rubber strips. The crossbar boxes arrived damaged on the ends with clear tape keeping them closed. I now have to wait to install in vehicle until those strips arrive

We will get those rubber strips sent out to you! Thanks for letting us know Kevin.

First off, ordering and delivery couldn’t have been simpler. The flaps on one end of the box were open but luckily it was on the packing paper end of the box so nothing was lost.

As for installation, I’m a computer guy and while I can get a job done with instructions, it normally takes me well longer than estimated. Not true with this rack... after an initial read through of the instructions it took less than 35 minutes to get it installed by myself.

My ‘21 Toyota C-HR has drill outs for the feet to connect to so no measuring front/back was required which I believe saved a ton of time.

Overall I couldn’t be happier... I head out to pick up m,y kayak next week for the maiden haul!

Very nice. Purchased these crossbars and associated parts to attach to an ARE cap on a 2015 Tacoma. Looks great, fits well (had to file track nuts a bit to fit into the pre-installed tracks on the cap), but all in all very pleased with the results. etrailer staff very helpful in lining up the necessary parts.

Installed the Rhinorack system on my 2018 Honda HR-V to replace my Thule Evo system which would whistle at 50mph+. Installation was very straight forward with easy to follow instructions. Rack fit great, feels solid and no whistling or wind noise at highway speed! Highly recommend!

Great bars - very quiet, solidly built, and nice looking. I put these on my Mercedes E350 Wagon. I can fit 4 bikes or a narrow Thule box and 2 bicycles (with pedals removed). Definitely would recommend Rhino Rack.

2012 Infiniti G37

I am getting a bit of whistling at around 15-20 mph, but it doesn't happen all the time and can only hear it if sunroof is open. Do not notice any additional noise compared to no roof rack if my sunroof is closed, even if windows are open. Feels very strong once installed and install is pretty straightforward. Still feel it deserves 5 stars as I believe some noise is expected.

by:

Great sturdy product. I only have two complaints and one minor thing:

1. These whistle. A lot. They do come with rubber inserts that slide into the top and bottom parts of the rail that help substantially with the whistling, but just be aware that if you have other things that mount to the rail and it doesn't line up, that you could be dealing with that whistling.

2. Mounting the rails to the feet is a pain with the included allen wrench. It doesn't need to be a security allen wrench, so I used a longer one that I had on hand and it made installing it easier. You do have to tighten the allen completely blind and spin it next to your roof, so just be careful if you opt to go with the longer allen wrench.

3. This is minor-- but the instructions said that the bolt that goes through the foot into the mounting hardware onto the roof was also an allen, but it ended up being a hex bolt. Once I figured it out it wasn't a big deal because I have my own tools to install the bolt, but if you buy this set with the RCP48-BK mounting hardware be aware that you'll need a 10mm socket or wrench. There also wasn't any instructions for what the torque spec needs to be, but I found online

Thank you for your review. I recommend to make sure the rubber strip in the bottom of the bar is pressed securely into the channel. If you are still experiencing wind noise I recommend to add a fairing to your set up with part # RRRF4

The Rhino rack system we bought has worked perfectly for our Subaru Crosstrek. We purchased it to support a rooftop tent, and it was incredibly easy to install, is very sturdy, and noiseless with or without the tent.

by:
2013 Subaru Impreza

Its been one year since I installed the Rhino Rack crossbars and I have absolutely no issues. The main use is to carry my Kayaks on my 2013 Subaru Impreza utilizing Yakima JayLow kayak carriers. The only caveat is to be sure to properly cut and install the plastic channel inserts (underside) or you will experience an annoying whistling sound. If you're looking for high quality crossbars, I highly recommend these.

Chevrolet Equinox

When we made our Chevy Equinox into our RV towed car we quickly found out we needed help from etrailer.com. From ebrakes and a baseplate to the tow bar and naked rook Rhino roof rack they were great to work with. I did all of the installation and most of it was easy. Some of it was harder so we relied on etrailer's great videos for things like installing the brake system and base plate. Everything is working great so kudos to etrailer!

by: 03/19/2021

This pair of Rhino Rack Vortex Aero crossbars are great quality - solid and fairly easy to install. Some people question why the top-fitting rubber strips are in 3 sections rather than solid; now that I've installed the crossbars and attached a kayak carrier, I have one explanation. When installing a carrier that screws onto the top of these bars, it's much easier to trim and get a close fit while working with 3 shorter strips rather than one long one. After trimming for a top, screw-mounted carrier, you'd have 3 pieces anyway. Great job Rhino Rack & etrailer rep for the help!

Love it, fast shipping, works great and looks awesome on my car!

Comments
After a year, the rack is still in very top shape, easy to remove for the winter since I use is only for Kayaks in the summer, easy reinstall. One thing that barely need to be mentioned, some the noise is created on the side tips when driving moderately *cough* *cough*, but it is to be expected since it doesnt serve for aerodynamic :

Perfect fit for my Prius and the SUPs I carry multiple times a week. LOVE the folks at etrailer Their advice and knowledge is amazing. Don't shop anywhere else!

by:

There were no instructions for these but the instructions for the bases told how they were to be installed. These bars are heavy duty and well made. They come with three rubber "vortex" strips that get installed on the top (designed to smooth the air flowing over them) and two plastic measuring strips (to help you align your bars to the bases) that get installed on the bottom.

The top (vortex) rubber strips press fit into place with a lip and are best installed without the end caps on as the three pieces together are longer than the bars and one will need to be cut. Not sure why one long piece wasn't provided as there were no instructions.

The bottom plastic measuring piece strips fit into the channels on the bottom and can be used to align the bars with the bases to ensure that you have the bars evenly spaced. Once you have the bars spaced you can tighten them down and cut these strips to fit in the inner and outer gaps on the bottom of the crossbar on either side of the base.

The plastic end caps come with a key to unlock/secure them to the bars but these seem to be the least secure part of the system.

My Yakima J-Bar Kayak racks fit perfectly on this system and are rock solid. For the price of this system I would have liked a little better quality in the caps and covers but other than that it's a very robust roof rack system.

Comments
I like the products pretty much considering it was the only option available for my vehicle. The roof racks do cause a bit more wind noise than I had hoped but Im used to it now and just turn the radio up a bit more. I did go back and read my reviews again and they are still accurate a year later.

  • What are the Crossbar Spread Limitations for Rhino-Rack SX Roof Rack on a 2006 Subaru Forester
The crossbar spread range listed in the installation instructions is just a recommended crossbar spread. If you needed to space the crossbars closer or further apart, you can. Most roof mounted accessories require crossbar spreads between 23 inches and 32 inches, however, you can move the crossbars to any spread as long as the crossbars stay attached to the factory side rails on your Forester. As you said, the maximum spread between the crossbars is only limited by the space available on...

If your 2014 VW Jetta wagon has the type of sunroof that actually goes into a cavity inside the roof and no part of it sticks up then it will not interfere with a roof rack. If it does slide up and back it is more likely to interfere with the sunroof. I do not advise opening the sunroof with the rack installed or with something loaded on it. You really would not want to either because even though the bars are aerodynamic it is still going to be noisy. With that said the Rhino-Rack roof...

  • Compatibility of VW Fork Mount Bike Rack with Rhino Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars
It'll depend on how the fork mount attaches to the crossbar. If it's meant to fit into the slot on top of the crossbar, it should fit. If the bike rack is meant to fit around the crossbar, it would be harder to say, as we don't carry that bike rack and I cannot test it. A Rhino Rack Vortex Aero crossbar measures 3-1/8 inches wide by 1-3/16 inches wide. You'd need to measure to ensure your VW bike rack would accommodate a crossbar of those dimensions.

We do indeed have a roof rack that will fit your 2019 Ford Fiesta 4-door sedan, and the best option for the rack is going to be from Rhino-Rack. The reason for that is because Rhino-Rack offers the best overall value for a roof rack; the quality is the same as similar brands, but at a better price point. This gives you a high-quality roof rack for your Fiesta, but without having to pay just for a certain brand name on the crossbars. The parts that make up the Rhino-Rack roof rack that...

  • Differences Between Rhino Rack Roof Racks Compatible with 2014 Kia Sorento
I show two Rhino Rack roof rack options available for your 2014 Kia Sorento non-SX Limited - without Vista Roof with factory installed rails that run front to back, part # RRVA118S-2,RRSX009, and part # RRVA118B-2,RRSX009. Note that the racks are not compatible with vehicles equipped with the glass or panoramic roof. The only difference between these two parts is # RRVA118S-2,RRSX009 is silver and # RRVA118B-2,RRSX009 is black. These set ups offer aerodynamic crossbars that are strong...

  • Rhino-Rack Roof Rack Fit on 2017 VW Golf Alltrack with Panoramic Roof
Rhino Rack as well as other roof rack manufacturers like Thule and Yakima will all state that their rack systems can be used on vehicles with the panoramic roof, but also make a blanket statement that the roof should NOT be opened with the rack in place. The risk typically comes into play not from the rack itself, but from the attachment mechanism for accessories mounted on the roof rack, but because replacing a broken roof is expensive, they just state that the roof shouldn't be used...

  • Are Locks Available for Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Roof Rack Crossbars # RRVA118B-2
Yes, indeed! The Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Black Aluminum Roof Rack Crossbars # RRVA118B-2, and their silver-color counterparts # RRVA118S-2, both can be fitted with locking end caps to secure your rack-mounted items. The locking end caps are part # RRVA-LEC4 and this kit consists of a set of four end caps and two keys. Please do note that this particular crossbar is 44-inches, not long enough for your truck. Suitable longer bars are available, however. For reference I have linked you to...

  • Roof Rack for a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen with Panoramic Sun Roof
The Rhino-Rack roof rack # RRVA118B-2 and # RRSX100 does fit the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen. I do not recommend opening the panoramic sun roof as there could be interference. It may be possible to move the bars to places along the rails that will allow you to open it but you will need to determine that with the bars on the actual vehicle. We have installed this system on a 2010, see video link, but not on a 2013 so we have not determined clearance with the panoramic roof.

  • Will a Rhino Rack Roof Rack System Fit a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander with Factory Side Rails
Yes, the Rhino-Rack Roof Rack Crossbars, # RRVA118B-2, do attach to the factory raised side rails on a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander using feet # RRSX100. Either set has a capacity of 130 pounds. You will need to consult your owners manual for the capacity of the roof and side rails to determine the capacity of each. Whichever is the lowest rated component, side rails, crossbars, or roof, is the limit you need to go by.
