Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 08/08/2022

I inherited an aluminum trailer that ended up needing a complete overhaul and etrailer was the best resource I could have found. After researching extensively to find out what I needed and watching their videos on how to do it I ended up ordering an EZ-lube axle, galvanized hubs, springs and a hanger kit (in other words everything from the frame down).
Everything shipped quickly and arrived in great shape. All the parts worked perfectly and I couldn't be happier!

Axle worked perfectly with all the other components i bought with it.

Bought this for my boat trailer. Great looking axle took all the measurements and it looked like it would fit. When I put my hubs on it they were about one inch short. So being short there are no threads to tighten the nut against the bearing. So now I need to order there hubs. This should be mentioned when you order the axle. Or give the hub over all length.

The axel is working great with no problems.
Richard W - 11/04/2017

Axle bolted right in place and has been performing flawlessly for a year now. Great product!!!

1 yr later, axle and bearing set is working well.
I decided to replace the axle under my trailer rather than the whole trailer.
I like the pre-bend in the tube for keeping tires balanced under load as well as the basic finish rather than bare steel.
Purchase price made it even better after shopping around a bit.

Doing well, as you know, the axle gets used only when the trailer does so it sits a lot. But I do enjoy that it has the pre bend to it so when loaded up it tracks true and the tire wear is even.
Scott - 01/30/2018

Received the axle quickly, perfect fit. Have bought from etrailer many times and will continue to do so

Axle is still good after a year
John C - 01/27/2021

Shipped fast. Product seems strong. I do have a problem (not etrailer's fault), the axle I replaced didn't have a raised leave spring mount as this one does. That extra inch put my tires into the fenders (literally) :( will have to cut fenders off and probably end up getting another axle maybe one longer so I can have boat ride between fenders instead of over them.

easy install, no issues after a year in use

Helpful staff...quality shipping competitive pricing..etrailer recommended..that's why I am a repeat customer

One of the best companies i have dealt with great communication and very fast delivery

As usual, I can get parts cheaper and faster from etrailer. I don't even look for local suppliers these days. Since I discovered your excellent website and in-stock supplies, I just order and poof it appears, magic!

The parts where just what we needed for our trailer Shipping was fast and no damage to parts.

Should do the trick.

The Axle fit perfectly and was a great deal! Everyone was great and even expedited the shipping up to Alaska. Will definitely be ordering parts from here in the future

I now have 9780+ miles on my trailer. This item has held up to the task.

Exactly what I needed. Came with all the parts necessary.

Best axle i have every seen. No need for bearing buddies anymore.

The right part showed up on time. Thank you!

Axle is what I expected at a good price I will be back for more parts in the future

fit just fine got it 3 days

extreme high quality they built strong you will not find a better price anywhere

Worked perfect!

Axle arrive in good condition. Went together like it should. Very happy with the product

  • Can Trailer Axle be Replaced With 1 Larger Hub-Face Measurement
The Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles # T20BTR-EZ-7258 should work great for your application! The only time that having your hub-face sit out an extra inch would be a problem is if that made your trailer tires touch fenders that you might have on the trailer. If your trailer doesn't have any fenders then you won't have any problems going this route! Please note that if you only have 1 axle this is alright. If you have more than one axle then you'd need to swap out all...

  • Axle Capacity of 1-1/2 Inch Square Axle.
The only way to know for sure the capacity of your axle is based on the information from the manufacturer when the axle is new. Typically, 1-1/2 inch square axels have a capacity somewhere between 1,000 - 2,000 pounds. Sometimes the spindle and hub can also help point us in the direction of finding axle capacity, but even then it is still an approximation since it is impossible to tell if they are the same size as what came on the axle. • Can Replacement Trailer Axle with Smaller Diameter be Used on a Boat Trailer
If the axle is bent up in the middle then that is normal. Trailer axles have a bow in them so that when weight is placed on the trailer it flattens out. That is part of what gives an axle its capacity. If there is not enough weight on the axle then the tires will remain toe in at the bottoms and you will get tread wear just on the outsides of the tread. If the axle is bent in some other way then replacing the axle is a good idea. The diameter difference means that you would likely have...
