The Prodigy RF cannot be submerged in water.
The Prodigy RF is not compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes.
The Prodigy RF cannot distinguish between hazard lights and brake lights. If you turn on your vehicle's hazard lights while towing with this controller, your trailer brakes will pulse.
Proportional Braking
With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.
As long as the Prodigy RF controller is mounted correctly, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.
Wireless Bluetooth Transmission for Portability
The Prodigy RF is perfect for anyone who has multiple tow vehicles. There's no hardwiring necessary. Just plug the 7-way lead on the control module into your vehicle's 7-way connector and plug the 7-way on your trailer into the port at the rear of the RF so that the braking signal can be transmitted from your vehicle to your trailer. Then plug the remote into your vehicle's standard 12-volt accessory outlet and use it to control the module wirelessly.
Because you don't have to wire the Prodigy RF to your vehicle, the trailer that you mount the module to can be easily shared among multiple tow vehicles. As long as your vehicle has a 7-way connector, you can use the Prodigy RF. This system is also compatible with vehicles that have multiplex wiring systems precisely because it does not wire into your vehicle.
Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing
Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's Prodigy RF brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the predetermined power setting.
So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.
If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.
Approximate Gross Trailer Weight
Boost Level
Increase in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVW
B1
13%
Equal to tow vehicle GVW
B1 or B2
13% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVW
B2 or B3
25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVW
B3
25%
Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.
Safety Features
The Prodigy RF offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. In addition to basic troubleshooting, this controller works to prevent problems before they begin. When the Prodigy RF is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode. If there has been no activity for 2 hours, then the system will go into sleep mode. Both of these modes are designed to drop the power draw, minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.
When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the Prodigy's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.
If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override button is easily accessible on the remote control. Pushing this button engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.
In addition to all of those safety features listed above, the RF offers diagnostics such as:
Open ground
Overload
Output short
Power loss
No trailer connection
Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation
The self-leveling feature of the Prodigy RF ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount the power module, which contains the inertia sensor, on your trailer tongue or frame as indicated. Some drilling may be required.
Note: The Prodigy RF must be mounted within ± 5 degrees of level on the horizontal plane and must be lined up so that the power cable extends toward the tow vehicle for the internal sensor to function properly.
Once the power module is mounted on your trailer and connected to your vehicle, simply sync up the handheld remote to the module as per the included instructions. Then plug the remote into any 12-volt auxiliary outlet in your tow vehicle for power.
Installation Accessories
See etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Packaging arrived distorted and bound together with tape. I have not had an opportunity to test the device or to ascertain if there is any damage to the unit, but the shipping packaging was not designed to permit safe and secure shipping. A very bad start to my relationship with your company when you don't secure shipment on a $[XX]+ electronic product. You asked for this review - here it is.1310301
This was easy to install and works great. I drove with the trailer just briefly before connecting this brake controller. What a huge difference. The fact that the head unit is now portable makes this very attractive. I wish I had this before since I just changed vehicles and had to buy a whole new brake controller again.1099497

I have been using this now for just about a year. I have used it quite frequently with my travel trailer and it has been rock solid. I like how easy it is to adjust the braking force.
I had essentially no room around the driver area in my Jeep Grand Cherokee for the standard mounting of a brake controller, so I thought this would be a good solution. Installation was easy. Our RV company mounted the power module on a transverse chassis beam, completely hidden from view. The remote paired quickly and easily. Once paired you simply plug it in and you're good to go. Easy to change boost. When not towing you can disconnect and stow the remote, so nothing remains in the cabin. Short of having a built-in brake controller, this is an excellent solution.982803

The cab connection was loose in the box with the larger controller with no packing. The cab connection should have been in a plastic package by itself, the package was damaged, not sure if the controller is damaged or not.1330605

Thank you for your review. I apologize for the state your package arrived in. Have you gotten the chance to test the item yet to see if it is in working order?
This is a great product. The installation was quick -- it took almost as long to unpack the box as it did to install. Directions were complete and easy to follow. I love that the remote controlling unit can store out of sight so this doesn't change the look of my vehicle's interior.1015569
Installed on my 2006 Lexus GX470, worked like a charm, hassle free and perfectly with my travel trailer. I would highly recommend this Brake controller.1286230

Had it for about a year and have used it about a dozen times hauling my 33 foot camper trailer. I like the convenience of not having to wire something into my truck. works really well once you get it dialed in right. would recommend to anyone needing a brake controller but not wanting to go the hardwired route.1258341

I received my order from etrailer.com within a few days which was great enough. Then during my installation of the product (etrailer had a great installation video as well) I discovered that a small component that contained some adhesive pads were damaged and I mentioned that to Courtney when she emailed and checked with me on the order. She was able to arrange for the manufacturer to resend that part free of charge to me. Thank you Courtney, you and etrailer got it going on! Great service.1269807

I never give 5 stars to anything, because everything can be improved. This brake controller may seem expensive, but not when you consider you can install it yourself and not pay someone else a lot of money. Also, you can take it with you if and when you get a new vehicle. It works very well. etrailer.com shipped it fast and it got here faster than what the tracking said.
I have purchased several things from etrailer.com and their customer support has been very helpful and they are very competitive.1267595

Dealership was going to charge me $1k for a wired one with installation. So this was a bargain in comparison.
I'm a non-handy person, and managed to get this installed, up and running in about 30 minutes (drilling holes into the hitch took most of that time). The remote paired on the first try. Have towed about 20k miles with it since then, including over Big Horn NF's ridiculous grades, and it has been perfect.1260193

I purchased this unit for my motorhome and it will not work on anything over 20’ long I even contacted the manufacturer. And they worked with me on this for 3 months and finally they refunded me my money, so anyone owning a motorhome do not use this item, ment for pickup trucks etc.1229524

2004 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty
Used this on a borrowed dual axle trailer that I borrowed from a brother in-law. It worked just as it should have and was very easy to use! Follow the instructions and you shouldn't have any issues at all. I built a wooden mount that I bolted the unit to and then used large zip ties to connect it inside the tongue of the trailer. Never had a single issue with this product performing the way it was supposed to.1100580

The two wires that you are reading about are the battery charge wire that goes back to the 7-way connector and the brake control power wire. Typically, these wires will need to be connected to use a brake controller in your 2009 GMC Sierra.
If you plan on installing the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, # TK94FR, then you will only need to install the battery charge wire, which will supply 12V power to your 7-way connector. This wire can be found to the left of the under hood fuse... view full answer...
I attached a copy of the installation instructions for the Tekonsha RF Prodigy Brake Controller # 90250 for you to check out, but here is what you will need to do.
I am going to start from the beginning:
1. Connect the trailer to the tow vehicle.
2. Plug the power module 7-way cable into the tow vehicle.
3. Make sure that the trailer 7-way is not connected to the power module.
4. Start vehicle engine, or just turn the key to the on position if this will send power to the 7-way
5. Plug... view full answer...
When wiring the 40-amp circuit breaker for your brake controller installation, the brass terminal on the breaker should be connected to the battery hot (positive) terminal. Sometimes breaker manufacturers will include a small stamped legend on the breaker housing to indicate the polarity of the terminals, but sometimes they omit this. Try connecting the wires on the breaker to have the brass terminal connect to battery hot.
The flashing NC message will appear on the controller under several... view full answer...
Yes, as long as the remote that you currently have came from a Prodigy RF unit, then you can pair any Prodigy RF remote with any Prodigy RF power unit. You will simply need to start the pairing process over again with the new remote.
I have attached the installation instructions that explains how to pair the remote with the power unit. view full answer...
I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and he said that once you pair the Prodigy RF # TK94FR with a vehicle it should maintain that setting so you should be good to go once you are ready to use it again. Worse case scenario you will have to pair it again if for some reason the setting did not take. I have linked the installation instructions should you need them. view full answer...
The Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, # TK94FR, does not control the trailer lighting, but the trailer light functions do pass through the brake controller to the trailer lights. If the trailer lights work when you plug the trailer into the truck, then this unit will have no affect on the lighting functions.
You will plug the 7-way connector from your trailer into the Prodigy RF unit and then you will plug the 7-way connector from the Prodigy RF into the 7-way Socket on your truck.... view full answer...
It would not hurt to keep the hand held unit and the trailer with the RF # TK94FR mounted on it together when not in use but it is not a requirement. Worst case scenario is if it has been long enough between uses you may have to pair the two together again. view full answer...
The issue with using an independent trailer-mounted battery to power trailer brakes is that you would not know exactly when the battery was near depletion nor when you would lose braking power on the trailer.
This would be a safety concern that is best avoided by using the brake signal feed from the 7-way on the tow vehicle. If your dealer is installing the hitch and trailer wiring, and is also doing the necessary programming of the vehicle, he can check to ensure that the correct brake... view full answer...
Mounting the brake controller in an accessible location is necessary so that if there is a situation where you need to apply the trailer brakes without pressing the truck brakes or if the connection to the truck brake circuit is lost you can use the trailer brakes in an emergency. The brake controller also needs to be securely mounted if it is proportional because the power supplied to the trailer brakes works off of inertia. If the controller is loose the proper amount of stopping force... view full answer...
The Prodigy RF brake controller # TK94FR uses radio frequencies to communicate between the in-cab unit and the brake controller, so infrared blocking windows will not interfere with the function of the brake controller. view full answer...
With the 7-Way installed on your 1997 Dodge Ram 1500, all you will need is the power wire (that is run in the 7-Way connector at the rear of the vehicle). When installed correctly, the 7-Way is connected to the tow vehicles battery which supplies the power needed by the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, # TK94FR. You do not have to do anything with the blue wire on the vehicle, but the trailer brake power wires will need to be ran to the trailer brake connection inside the trailer end... view full answer...
The trailer mounted Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller - Proportional, item # TK94FR, will transmit up to 300 feet according to my contact at the manufacturer. That being said the controller itself is normally mounted near the tongue of the trailer so the length of the RV is usually not a problem and the Prodigy RF, item # TK94FR, should work great on your trailer. You will need to take into account anything that would block the signal though. Usually there is no problem with this between... view full answer...
It sounds like there is a pairing problem between the remote and the unit itself that mounts to the trailer. You will also just want to double check and make sure that your vehicle 7-Way and the trailer 7-Way are wired the same as the Tekonsha Prodigy RF, # TK94FR.
The pairing instructions included with the manual which I have linked for reference, must be followed exactly in order for the unit to function properly. The N.C. flashing can be because the hand held unit is not paired properly,... view full answer...
It sounds like your trailer connectors on both vehicles are wired correctly to work with the Prodigy RF, # TK94FR, so it could just be a small step in the pairing details that is causing the problem. First, make sure the trailer is coupled to the towing vehicle. Then plug the RF into the tow vehicle connector making sure the trailers connector is not connected to the RF yet.
Next, start the tow vehicle engine and then plug the hand-held unit into the auxiliary power port. Turn the power... view full answer...
Once you have paired the hand held unit with the trailer mounted unit of the Prodigy RF, # TK94FR, it will remain paired unless you try to use the hand held unit with a different RF unit. So you should only have to pair it once. I have included a link to the installation details for reference. view full answer...
I attached installation instructions that I checked out and it looks like you need to do the following steps:
1. Connect trailer to tow vehicle
2. Plug the Power Module 7-Way cable into the tow vehicle
3. The trailer 7-way must be disconnected from the power module
4. Start the vehicle engine, or sometimes you will only have to have the key on (try both since you are having problems)
5. Plug the remote hand held unit into an auxiliary power source within reach of you
6. Turn the power... view full answer...
The accelerometer in this Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller # TK94FR is not affected by vertical jolts or jostles, it would only be affected by horizontal accelerations.
Another thing you should consider is that this unit will not apply your trailer brakes unless you are applying the brakes of your tow vehicle. You would not have to worry about your brakes activating without your vehicle brakes being applied.
I can not imagine it happening, but if erratic brake behavior does appear... view full answer...
The # 2 terminal in the 7-Way vehicle side trailer connector wiring diagram, in the Prodigy RF brake controller instructions, is the electric brake output circuit, and is only needed for an in cab mounted brake controller. This circuit is not required for use of the Prodigy RF brake controller, # TK94FR. If you were to use an in cab trailer brake controller the blue wire would be ran to the blue wire exiting the back of the brake controller.
The Prodigy RF only requires that the # 4 terminal... view full answer...
You will only have to pair the RF Prodigy part # TK94FR one time. Once that is done you can easily swap the setup between the different vehicle/trailers of your fleet and it will work just fine.
I attached an install video for the RF for you to check out as well. view full answer...
If you are using multiple vehicles and trailers, the Tekonsha RF Brake Controller, part # TK94FR will need to be paired each time you change either the vehicle or trailer.
The RF senses the distance from the ground and when towing with different components whether it is the trailer or tow vehicle, it needs to reset to that configuration. If you are single-towing which is using the same trailer and tow vehicle every time you do not have to pair it each time, even if you disconnect them... view full answer...
Sounds like you are looking for the Prodigy RF Brake Controller part # TK94FR. This controller actually installs on the trailer and plugs in between the 7-way on the vehicle and the 7-way on the trailer. There will be a remote that mounts on the interior of your vehicle once installed.
I attached an install video for you to check out as well. view full answer...
I attached a link to the install instructions for the Prodigy RF part # TK94FR as well as an install video that covers how the controller installs and functions. view full answer...
The Prodigy RF brake controller # TK94FR and its hand held remote will remain paired with each other after the initial set up but you may have to run through the pairing process again if the trailer has been sitting for several months. If it is a couple of weeks you should be good to go! view full answer...
The only time you should have to re-pair is RF Brake Controller would be when you wanted to put it on another vehicle.
The RF controller should be able to be paired with a trailer and stay paired once set. I have heard of some cases of having to re-pair after long periods between uses and vehicles with LED tail lights may not supply enough voltage for pairing. But you shouldn't have to re-pair each time you unhook and hook up. view full answer...
