Video Transcript for Voyager RV Backup Camera Systems 12V PWM Filter Installation - 2018 Forest River Grey Wolf Travel Tr

Hey guys, Kevin here with Etrailer. And today I'm gonna be showing you how to install the Voyager PWM filter here on our 2018 Forest River Grey Wolf travel trailer. If you purchased a 2021 or a 2022 and on GM or Chevy truck, you've noticed that your Furrion or your Voyager camera no longer works. This is because the pulse wave modulation that sends your power from your seven way back to your camera no longer sends the same amount of voltage which ends up losing your signal. You can't ever connect for whatever reason. GM just decided to change their wiring so camera companies had to make up a solution to fix that for the 2022, 2020 vehicles.

There used to be a little seven way connector that you could use. But once again, in the 2021 versions GM changed their wiring again. So we we're left with nothing except for wiring your camera directly to a battery up until now. So Voyager came up with this PWM filter which sends power from your seven way up to our wiring here. It's gonna go into this capacitor, it'll build up power and then push that up to your camera, to boost the voltage to what it needs to be so that you can get a direct signal.

So for this installation fairly straightforward, pretty easy. All you need to do is just make sure that you have the correct tools for the job. That being a wire stripper, that can go up to 22 or 24 gauge wire, some electrical tape, and then a crimping tool that can crimp down those butt connectors. So all in all fairly simple, it tells you exactly which way it needs to go. 'Cause it has that one little white collar on one side of our wiring that says, hey, this goes to the camera side.

And then just the opposite side goes right over to our trailer wiring. So all in all really easy, anyone at home could do it themselves. All right, so to begin our installation, we're gonna have to remove our camera and possibly our mount, depending on what kind of gasket you have on the back. I've already removed this just to double check and there is a gasket in the way. So I'm just gonna go ahead and take the whole mount off.

If you can get away with just pulling the camera out definitely go for that. But one little word of advice, these screws are super tiny. So make sure you got your hand there ready to catch 'em because you don't wanna loose them. I've got our shark-fin mount down here on our Furrion camera. You can see this little rubber gaskets in the way, and I need to get to my wiring here. So what I'm gonna do, because This is gonna be too big to fit through that hole. I'm gonna take my wire cutters here and just kind of snip back some of this gasket. I don't wanna go too crazy though, 'cause we do want to keep this just so we are making sure that we're waterproof here. Try and do my knife. You just wanna be real careful that you're not cutting too much and taking any chances and actually cutting into your wire. And what I'm doing instead of cutting a giant hole is just cutting little strips so that when we push it, it'll go right in and then kinda help it from coming back out. So we're gonna go ahead and I'm gonna cut my wire right about here. I wanna make sure that I'm not cutting too close to our connector, but I also don't wanna be too far up that I'm not gonna be able to get to my wiring again. And then we can set our camera aside. So I strip back the casing that goes over our two wires here. And as you can see I mean these are like maybe 22 gauge wire. I mean they're real, real tiny. So you need to be real careful cutting the casing off of these that you don't just cut through the wire itself. And I'm actually gonna cut a little bit more than I need off just because with this being so small I wanna make sure that I can double it up and stick it into our butt connectors that came on our filter here. I ended up twisting our negative wire. I'm gonna do the other side right now with our positive twisted it just a little bit and then I'ma fold it in half and twist it again. So I get a nice thick piece here that I can stick into my butt connector 'cause I don't want those butt connectors coming out. We can go ahead and take our filter. So there's two sides. One, side's gonna come with this little strip here. That's gonna say, hey, this is going to your camera. So we wanna use the opposite end and then run this up to our camera side. So for this side, our red is going to be our power. Just like with our camera here, red is our power. So I'm gonna connect those just like they are with their colors and take my crimpers. So I'm gonna pop this on and with how small that wire gauge is, if you need to fold it a couple of times don't feel bad about it. Go ahead and do it. All right now that I got my power wire crimped, I'm gonna go ahead and do my negative side. Make sure it's nice and tight up in there. And then I'm gonna go ahead and crimp it. And I'm gonna give it a little yank test just to make sure I got solid connections on both. I don't wanna take any chance at this coming undone or just not making the connection because then our camera's not gonna work. And since we strip back that casing we have some exposed wire. I'm gonna go ahead and just wrap this up, nice and tight with some electrical tape. I don't wanna take any chances that water getting through the gasket here and ruining our connections. All right, now that that's nice and tight. We can go ahead head and push our wiring back up into the body of our trailer. Like I said before, I just cut little strips into the gasket here. That way I can push this in and have it kinda hold it in place without it popping back out. And this wall, so this wall is a little bit thinner. So you may have to kind of play around, getting it in right. Just because of the size of our capacitor here. You need to, you can like on this gasket, it's kind of loose. So I can kind of pull it through just a little bit from the backside. Push it down into our hole. And now we can make our connections with our camera. So once again, I'm gonna strip back my casing so I can expose my wires. We'll strip back our casing on our individual wires. I'll spin those up a little bit. And fold them over. And just like before I'm gonna connect my red wire with my red wire on the filter. And my black wire with my black wire on the filter. I'll go ahead and do a little yank test. Just make sure that these are in there nice and tight. Both sides, and we'll go ahead and seal up our connection with some more electrical tape. Once that's complete, we can push our wiring in. We can leave just like this connection point out just like it was when the camera was first installed. And then we can start mounting our shark-fin up into position. And that was a good time also to check your caulking around your mount. Make sure if you need to replace any of it you don't wanna take a chance at having any water getting in and ruining your camera. All right now with our camera back in place we can go ahead and test it to make sure it works. All right, now that we're hooked up to our truck. We can see that the camera obviously works 'cause you can see me right now waving. So we're all good to go. Well, I think that about does it for our insulation here on the Voyager PWM filter here on our 2018 Forest River Gray Wolf travel trailer. My name's Kevin, thanks for watching..

It's just what I needed and you will as well ifyou have a newer gm pickup
All of a sudden my RV back up camera stopped working when I hooked up my 7 pin connection on my new 2023 2500hd Silververado.
I hook the camera off and found I was getting power to the camera connection.
I hooked up the camera directly to the rv battery and the camera worked.
Evidently Gm is doing something different on the newer trucks and unless you have this filter your back up camera is not going to work. It's a strange thing because the camera is hooked up to a rear running light and it works.
Very easy to install

by:

Very easy to intall. It took all of 15 mintues to splice into my 2022 Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB FLX prewired camera system. Since I drive a 2022 Chevy Silverado with the High Country package, I needed this PWM filter to make my trailer camera work. Highly recommend for newer tow vehicles that have PWM taillight output.

by:

Thank you for your help. The 12V PWM Filter resolve my problem. Without this filter my 2019 GMC Denali would not send enough power to the backup camera to allow the camera to operate.

by:

This item corrected the issue I was having with my Lippert Insight backup/observation camera. As it turns out the issue was not with my trailer or the camera, it was the PWM that my 2022 GMC truck uses to power the running lights. Although this is for the Voyager camera it works with the any 12V Camera. Installed in about 45 minutes.

by:

Basic wire butt splices install simply and my furrion backup camera now works when I connect my trailer to my 2022 GMC HD truck. As expected, during daylight driving you have to switch the truck lights from auto to manual lighting to power the camera.

by:

Instal was straightforward, I am using this with a Furrion camera and a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500. Haven’t road tested yet but all seems to work well. Only thing I see is that the wires coming out of the camera are very thin and the butt connectors sent may not hold. I may have to solder the connections later

by:

I was able to order the part I needed to help resolve my issue with my RV camera not receiving a constant signal to the monitor. In the future, if I need anything speciality for my RV or assessories, will be looking at this website first. Customer service was great and received the item earlier than I was expected.

by:

  • How to Make Voyager Camera System Operate Properly on 2019 Chevy Silverado LTZ
This is a known issue, as the trailer running lamp circuit on the 2019 GM trucks doesn't send enough voltage to power the camera system. That is exactly what the adapter was designed to do. The Furrion # FR87PR is designed to provide the proper amount of voltage on the running lamp circuit of the 7-way so a camera system will receive enough power to operate reliably. Ford and GM 2019 models seem to have this issue. There's also now a more permanent solution, which is splicing in the PWM Filter # VGR64VR behind the camera to provide a steady current to the camera and clear up the signal issues.
