Weigh Safe ball mount coupled to a trailer

This Weigh Safe ball mount has an easy-to-use, built-in scale that measures your trailer's tongue weight every time you tow. If the scale indicates that your tongue weight is too low or too high, you can adjust it before you head out so that you can complete your journey with the peace of mind that your setup is safe.

What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.

Why is Tongue Weight So Important?

Weigh Safe helps ensure proper trailer tongue weight

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.

Built-In Tongue Weight Scale

The gauge of the Weigh Safe built-in tongue weight scale

The Weigh Safe ball mount's built-in scale signals you to adjust your load before you hit the road, resulting in a much safer and enjoyable towing experience. Before this ball mount, gauging your trailer's tongue weight was a hassle. You had to rely on inefficient bathroom scales, make a trip to the weigh station, or purchase a separate tongue weight scale. But with the Weigh Safe's built-in scale, measuring your tongue weight is as easy as coupling your trailer to your ball mount. Simply hook-up your trailer to the Weigh Safe ball mount just as you would any other ball mount. The weight of your trailer will push down on the hitch ball, which in turn pushes down on an internal hydraulic piston that sits on a bed of oil. When the piston drops into the oil, the pressure reading is sent out to the scale.

Easily Adjusts to Fit Your Setup

Weigh Safe ball mount has adjustable height

Adjusting and setting up the Weigh Safe ball mount to work with your specific trailer is easy. First, unlock and pull out the dual pins and remove the platform from the shank. Next, pull out the hitch ball retaining pin from the back of the platform and insert either the 2" or 2-5/16" hitch ball. A 1-7/8" hitch ball (WSB-L - sold separately) is also available. Then reinsert the retaining pin to secure the ball to the platform. Replace the platform and slide it along the shank to the desired height. Insert the dual pins and use one of the included keys to lock the pins in place.

Weigh Safe ball mounts installed in drop and rise positions

The Weigh Safe ball mount can be used in either the drop or rise position to best suit your application.

Superior Aluminum and Stainless Steel Construction

From the first moment that you lay eyes on the Weigh Safe ball mount you'll see that you're getting a superior, well-made product. The Weigh Safe's shank and ball mount platform are made entirely of 6061 T6 billet aluminum, which is the same material that is used to build aircraft components, automobile frames, and freight liners. This type of aluminum is known for having superior strength while maintaining its light weight, which makes it highly desirable over hollow steel components. 6061 T6 aluminum is also rustproof, which means the Weigh Safe hitch will maintain its clean, shiny, and impressive appearance for years to come. And the hitch balls are made of solid stainless steel, offering far greater protection against rust and corrosion than other steel hitch balls that are only painted or plated on the surface.

The Weigh Safe ball mount meets VESC V-5 regulations and is SAE J684 certified. These regulatory bodies - the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission and the Society for Automotive Engineers - create standards for the design, construction, and performance of automotive and towing accessories. Weigh Safe has had this ball mount thoroughly tested in simulation to ensure that it complies with these standards. The result is a strong, safe, sturdy product that is built to last.

I just got the Weigh Safe hitch with ball and scale ahead of due date. The workmanship and finish are beautiful. I'm scared to use it as I don't want to get it dirty.

Ive used this only a few times this past year but it has been great. The height adjustments and integral scale helps with hook-up and monitoring tongue weight when reloading implements. Its now sitting under my rear sear awaiting next use.

After a year of use, and thousands of miles on this hitch, I am very pleased. I have a slightly lifted F150 and a fairly low trailer. The adjustments on this hitch allowed me to maintain the geometry. The tongue weight scale is also a nice feature.

Impressive workmanship. Very heavy, solid unit. The components fit together perfectly, no slop - excellent machining. It will make switching between my camper, boat and trailer, and car trailer with the proper tongue weight easy and worry free. I can even hook up to friends equipment easily. I just like the peace of mind that comes with knowing a proper tongue weight is always in place. I bought the 1-7/8 inch ball just in case. I also bought the hitch lock and pin lock set so the unit doesn't get "misplaced".

I didn't know how much I needed one of these mounts.

The information about tongue load has always been important and guessing isn't the best way to determine the number. My mount isn't quite as shiny after a year of use but it's still easy to disassemble for the quick change on the balls and to adjust the height occasionally.

I think it's very well made and the price shouldn't hold you back if you pull any significant weight with an unknown load center.

And, if you're worried about the aluminum part, don't. I think it's a 6061-T6 alloy which is very strong. Mine doesn't have even a nick after a year of pretty regular use.

Not sure why etrailer wanted a follow up on this but after another year I can still say this is a great draw bar assembly. The star rating is almost perfect on almost a thousand reviews. If you pull any significant weight and it changes from time to time you probably need this ball mount to be safe. Or, you can get a manual scale and weight each time your load changes.....right...youll do that for sure. Not a lot of money compared to your tow vehicle, your trailer and your load or your life. Good investment.

This is the greatest ball mount! I have done away with all my heavy steel ball mounts and use this exclusively. Light weight and tells me the tongue weight at a glance.
I had this new utility trailer, and didn't know exactly where to place the tractor for proper tongue weight. With this ball mount you can move it a little until you have the weight you want.
And being easily adjustable makes it the last ball mount I will need!

This ball mount is perfect. I can’t believe I rode around for 3 years without knowing whether or not I was doing it right. This camper is the first thing I’ve towed, bought it when I owned a Tacoma. Traded it in for a Sequoia and now the height is different by enough for it to put way too much tongue weight on my old ball mount/hitch (I had to Google tongue weight). With this new adjustable mount with a built in scale I don’t have to guess. Take a look... tongue weight is 11-12%, and I know that because of the scale. They should make this mandatory. etrailer was very helpful by the way, I called and talked to someone live because I don’t know exactly what I’m doing...

Works great. Downsized trucks from one ton SRW to half ton. Wanted to be precise on tongue weights seeing I was going to be limited to 620 lbs. before needing weight distribution hitch. Just towed aluminum equipment trailer (1800 lbs) and 3 loaded Can Am Outlander Max 570s(1000 lbs. a piece). Load was 4800-5000 lbs. With the hitch in the neutral position on the back of my Ram 1500 tongue weight was around 600 lbs with some squat on truck rear axle. moved the hitch up 2 holes and tongue weight was just a hair under 500 lbs., very little squat on truck, and trailer only slightly inclined. Towed 400 miles round trip like a dream. No sway at all from proper tongue weight.

If you want the best, this is the best. Phenomenal quality and performance, thank you!

Found out that the 6 in drop was a bit to much.
Using on both my GMC 2500 and THOR/Axis 25.5

Works great.
Really does remove the doubt on tongue wait.

Still works, just remember where you kept the keys to change out the ball.

This is a great hitch. Very easy to use/install. Super durable. I bought it for the ease of always knowing how much my tongue weight is. I am very satisfied.

Probably the best adjustable height and multi-hitch ball system I've ever seen. It meets my towing capacity needs, height is easily adjusted up/down and having the 2 5/16", 2" and the optional 1 7/8" ball means I can tow all my toys. But I think the 1 7/8" ball should be standard when ordering. Otherwise, the tongue weight scale is an outstanding feature to have to make sure your trailer is loaded safely, as in... WEIGH SAFE!!

The weigh safe hitch is probably the best hitch that I have owned. However, the integrated lock on the hitch to raise or lower the ball seized up on me and it took me a considerable amount of time to free it up. The cover that I ordered may have prevented the dirt and road dust from getting inside the lock, but the way that it connects to the hitch to cover the lock is a really poor design because you could lose the cover while driving down the road.

It is very important to know the tongue weight of a trailer and most people have no idea what their weight is. The WS6-2 hitch is a quality product that makes changing the height or size of the ball a piece of cake and at the same time tells you what the tongue weight of your trailer is.

I have used the WS6-2 for a year now and love it. I recently made some changes to my trailer and the scale on the hitch showed me that I needed more tongue weight. It was an easy fix but I would never have known there was a problem without the WS6-2 hitch.
Melanie H - 12/13/2016

This hitch sometimes has what looks lilke fresh Transmission or regular oil on the bottom of it when I remove it... I usually remove it each time it is used and put it in the trunk of the car... Very nasty having to wipe it down to get the oil from it...

Very disgusting for a hitch in this price range... Looks good otherwise but a hassle to keep it clean and the oil out of my trunk lest I forget

Woody, thank you for your review and your business. The oil is coming from the scale and may be leaking enough to affect the readings from the gauge. There may be a defective seal or the ball mount may have been overloaded. Since this product has a limited lifetime warranty, please contact us at 1-800-298-8924. We would love to help!
-- Etrailer Expert Laura E - 01/16/2017

Very helpful in balancing the position of the car on the trailer. Once set, I remove the hitch as I have marked the car location. Hight quality, and it seems to be very accurate. Even locked to the motorhome, a good target for bad guys as it looks very expensive so I replace it a standard 2/5/8 setup for travel and it sits in the box until next time.

This is one of the best ball mounts I have ever use with ease, THANKS.

I've Had my weigh safe hitch now for about a year. I've used it about a dozen or so times now & I have to say, I'm satisfied w/ my purchase. The ease of changing the ball & the height makes towing different trailers a breeze. The light weight is also a plus! The cost was a little higher then I'd like hence my 4 stars & not 5. As for the quality, so far so good! I'm looking forward to many years of use. I've already convinced 2 other friends to buy them & 2 others want to see it & I know they will get the hitch as well after seeing it!

Great hitch. Have three balls for three most common sizes. Hitch is easy and adjustable so trailers are actually towing at correct tongue height.

Best hitch Ive owned. Works great and easy to adjust height. One hitch versus the three I used to carry and works for all trailers. Tongue height is always right and hence tow is smooth.
jwb - 12/31/2018

I am very pleased with the construction, light weight, and functionality. The tongue weight indicator allowed real time load spotting in my enclosed car hauler, resulting in solid handling while towing at highway speeds. I highly recommend this product. REFlowers

Continues to perform as expected. Light weight makes it is to install, load indicator continues to function. Its durable and dependable.
Randy F - 03/21/2021

The Weigh Safe Ball mount has worked out very well. The height adjustment has helped as I needed a lift, rather than a drop. At a quick glance, I can confirm that my boat trailer is in compliance and is balanced correctly without guessing. This has allowed me to "level" the vehicle with minimal effort. No sagging rear ends. I highly recommend the Weigh Safe 2.

Only hitch I will ever own. Have bought for all my vehicles. I tow a Super Air Nautique G21 so only the best is acceptable and this is it!

My truck is a Dodge Ram 2500 and the rear end sits higher than other pickups. I purchased this hitch system with the scale and interchangeable balls for a more efficient hitch system. I like the fact that you can see what the tongue weight is before hauling down the road. I truly like the adjustable height and was tired of having to change out hitches between the 2 5/16 inch and and 2 inch ball. This is much safer and easier to use.

Ron M - 03/18/2018

Package was delivered damaged and missing parts. They took care of it quickly and I received missing part in time for my trip. This ball mount is amazing and scale works perfect.

Very happy with these products. Super easy to install.

Very nicely made. This will be used for twin axle dump trailer and equipment trailer to balance load for safety and proper tire loading. Adjustable height allows me to move this between the truck and van. Our trailers are 2-5/16" receivers, but we also tow rental equipment that is typically 2", this solves the problem.

Seems very well made only thing I don't like is the ball. Even though it is well secured it is a little sloppy fitting in the hitch. This will creating a clunk when you are starting and stopping. Most likely you need the slop so there will be enough clearance for the scale to work so i don't think it is a defect just the way it needs to be to work with the scale.

  • Are Weigh Safe Ball Mounts Like WS6-2 Meant for Towing or Reading Trailer Tongue Weight Only
The Weigh Safe Adjustable ball mount you'd looked at, part # WS6-2 is meant for use while towing a trailer, and the scale will work simultaneously. This is a nice feature to have for cargo trailers or flat bed trailers used for cars or equipment, because you will immediately be able to see how loading the trailer will affect the trailer's tongue weight. If you're interested in a dedicated tongue weight scale, we offer the Sherline Tongue Weight Scale as part # 5780.
