Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we're gonna be test fitting the Yakima RoundBar roof rack system, consisting of part numbers Y00408, these are the round 48 inch crossbars, part number Y00148, these are the skyline towers for the Yakima crossbars for fixed mounting parts, part number Y003536, which is the RoundBar SL adapter for the Yakima baseline, skyline, timberline towers, and finally part number Y00244. This is the landing pad kit to fit specifically on your Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Yakima RoundBar roof rack system is great for carrying a wide variety of accessories on your roof while freeing up space inside your vehicle. This can carry anything from bike racks to cargo baskets to cargo boxes. With the RoundBars, you may experience some noise while you drive, but Yakima does offer fairings, which you can find on etrailer.com to cut down that wind noise and drag as well. Also with our end caps here, we do have plastic knockouts that can be removed and replaced with the Yakima SKS lock systems, which are sold separately. So, you can actually secure this to your roof, but you can also make it keyed alike with the accessories that you're hauling as well. It's also very easy to use.
You open up the door like so, and then you can lift it up out of place. When you're not using it, it does have these caps which you can put into place, so you don't have to remove them and they're ready for next time.Next, I'd like to give you a couple quick measurements. From the center of the roof to the bottom of our bar is gonna measure about three and seven eighths inches. From the center of the roof to the top is gonna be about five inches, so there's plenty of space for your accessories in between where you won't make contact with your roof. Now, since this does have a sunroof, you may be limited a little bit while the roof rack is installed. Also, both of our bars have a combined carrying capacity of 165 pounds, but you always want to double check with your owner's manual to make sure your roof can withstand those weights. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the roof rack system, let's go ahead and show you how it installs.
We have our front bar already installed on our roof rack system, and we have our rear bar partially assembled on the table here. Here we have our tower, the RoundBar adapter kit, and of course the landing pad, which fits inside our flush mount rail, and we'll get to that a little bit later. We'll first start off by attaching our adapter kit to our tower. We'll start by taking our plastic adapter piece here and just popping that into the top of our tower. Then we'll take our RoundBar, insert that into the center here, and go underneath and take our included tool and tighten it down. You don't want to tighten down all the way because next we're gonna slide this end to the other end of our bar.
It simply slides into place. Then we can finish tightening that bolt the rest of the way. What's good about this tightening tool is it does have a torquing feature. We're gonna hear those audible clicks, so now you know it's tightened down to its max capacity. So, next we'll remove the screw at the top here where we'll place our landing pad, and it does come with an included tool to do this. Remove the screw completely and set it aside to a place where you know where it's at, so when you're done using the roof rack, you can put it back in place.Next, we'll take our first part of our landing pad, we'll place it over the hole where the screw is that we just took out.
Then we'll take our second piece and set that on top like so. Then we'll take one of our screws, a lock washer and a flat washer, put it through the center, line up the holes, and take the included Allen tool and tighten it down. We already repeated this for the other side, and tighten it down until it's nice and tight, not gonna move, and now we can grab our bar.So, we'll take our bar and our towers, line them up, making sure they're in the open position, and set them in our landing pads. We'll do this to the other side, and then we'll measure for our crossbar overhang and make sure it's even as well. Once that's even, we'll tighten down the screw in the center here, so lock up our towers to our bar. Again, you're gonna want to do this until you hear those clicks. Once that's door, you push the door closed here, and now it's locked in to our landing pad. We'll do this on our driver's side as well. There you have it for the Yakima RoundBar roof rack system on our 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

These towers (Y00148) and the Landing Pads (Y00244) are needed to mount the cross-bars on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep has flush rails, with an open channel along the top.
They are very heavy duty, typical of Yakima stuff.
Worked great.
I bought a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. To use my Yakima Skyline Towers, I had to install these landing pads in the rack rail attached to the roof. The installation was easy, and the pads serve their purpose. But they don't seem to be engineered as secure as I would like. They have more flexibility than I think they should. The bolt head is over an inch from where it screws into the roof. I think Yakima could have engineered something more secure. In fairness to Yakima, the Jeep rack rail is different than any other rack system I've seen and is incompatible with any other system. But I am assuming that these landing pads will work OK with a full load and that the Yakima engineers have done an adequate job. This summer they will be put to the test for 3,000 miles. Note: the Yakima windshield fairing falls on the glass in the moon roof rendering the moon roof unopenable so long as the fairing is used.
Easy to install. Not impressed with the fit though. The biggest selling point is being able to remove the towers and leave the pad though. Overall happy with the purchase.
Working very in my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2020. They used for the cross bar to support my roof top tent
The rack looks to be excellent. The assembly is a nightmare. The instructions are terrible. The design for assembly is flawed. There is a stupid cover over the main bolt that you have to tighten. There is a video on Yakima’s website that kind of tells you how to get around it but not really. A 30 minute job took two hours.
Great design for a roof rack system.easy to put on and take off. Use it to carry 9-11 foot surf fishing rods. Takes two minutes to put on when I am ready to go fishing.
Not only did etrailer have a necessary component to my new Yakima rack system that no other retailer had in stock, their price was fair and they shipped quickly. Thanks etrailer!
