No, if you:

  • Are new to DIY projects or have limited tools to cut or drill as needed to install this hitch
  • Have a steep driveway that you don't want to risk scraping with a heavily loaded down carrier
  • Might get annoyed by seeing the cross tube every time you look at the back of your Subaru

Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

I installed this myself. Excellent packaging on hitch as it arrived undamaged. All hardware and bolt fish wires were firmly attached to the hitch. Instructions and video were very helpful in making this an easy project. I used car ramps and backed m wife’s Outback on them to provide a comfortable work area. Only thing different that I did from the video instructions was to mount the hitch with the 1st two bolts, mark the location, and drop the hitch to drill the forward bolts with a step drill. All newly drilled surfaces were painted for protection. Also found a couple of elongated frame hole plugs from our ’67 Mustang project to seal the hardware installation hole.

by:

Excellent hitch. Installation was straightforward. When enlarging the holes, be sure you’ve made them big enough for the carriage bolt heads to pass through, aka don’t get in a hurry. Also loctite!! I put a little automotive Krylon on the enlarged holes when I was done to hopefully hold off rust.

Hardest part was enlarging the holes, 2nd hardest was the exhaust hangers. Do yourself a favor and get new drill bits made for hard metal.

2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

Install went completely as expected. Very good instructions and product. Happy with the end result.

This was installed on a 2016 Subaru Outback.

Since i installed the hitch without help, i rigged up a strap to hold the hitch in place to align it with the bolts and to secure the nuts to hold it in place.

The strap went around the hitch and thru the latch for the rear hatch of the subaru. i also used a 2x2 inserted in the receiver to correctly orient the hitch to the car. Its hard to explain, but i added photos to help explain what i did. This system worked better than i had expected to get those bolt holes lined up and the nuts tightened.

Great hitch. Installed it myself in 2 1/2 hours. Works gray with bike rack. Highly recommended

by:

Such an easy install and Alex offered the best customer service I’ve had in a long time. Easy to follow instructions and the installation videos made this a great purchase.

So I recently purchased mountain bikes and knew I needed a bike rack and hitch. When making more expensive purchases, I research the product, competitors, pricing, customer services and reviews. I finally decided on the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver. I had it professionally installed and it looks great! I appreciate the help and assistance Teresa J. provided in helping me make my decision. Thank you eTrailer!

After one year, my hitch still looks and functions great! I love it so much, I ordered another etrailer Hitch for my other vehicle, a 2012 GMC Terrain and it works great on this and by 2015 Subaru Outback!

Curt harness sticky foam pad wasn’t sticky at all and seamed old. The hitch was high quality with a great video. The fish wire technique to install the bolts is friggin brilliant. Did whole job solo ( except for getting hitch on first 2 bolts) in about 3 hours.

Wasn’t bad too install, just wish I had good drill bits.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

I decided to go with the etrailer branded class 3 hitch for my wife's 2019 Outback after getting etrailer's recommendation on which one would be best paired with my Thule T2 Pro XTB bike rack, which is a great rack, btw. Main reasoning was that the hitch sits back on the vehicle a little more and gives better clearance for the rack when folded up. This would apply to other kinds of hitch mounted accessories too. The hitch is not quite as hidden under the vehicle as some of the others but I was more concerned about using the bike rack as intended.

Installation was not too bad, with the biggest challenge for me being the tight spaces around the muffler to drill the necessary holes even with the exhaust lowered as described in the video. I even considered removing the muffler for better access but was able to get it done without that. Main concern was damaging the exhaust system in the front if it was lowered too much. Using lubricant on the rubber exhaust hangers worked great for removing and putting them back on at the end. The tip for using a step drill bit worked great to enlarge the access holes the appropriate amount, as well. I was able to do the installation by myself with the help of a small rolling dolly on which to sit the hitch on while I bolted up the first set of bolts. It held the hitch up enough to work on one side at a time without having to support the entire weight of the hitch by myself. Having a helper would be better for sure. The 6 out of 10 installation difficulty scale seems about right to me.

The hitch itself seems to be good quality, nice welds, matte finish looks great on the vehicle too. It also fits like a glove around spare tire well. No adjusting really necessary, just install the first set of bolts in the existing frame holes and you are lined up. You do have to drill the 2 more forward set of holes but using the hitch frame as the template (it's already mounted on the vehicle at this point) of where the holes go, it was a snap from there.

I'll attach a couple of pics with the bike rack installed to show how much clearance there is. I also tested with a bike on the rack and was able to open the rear hatch all the way with the bike rack in the lowered position (a feature of the Thule T2). Hopefully, this will help others that want to use accessories that require clearance for bumper and hatch. Great communication and follow up from the etrailer team too!

Good quality hitch. I have ordered hitch recivers from etrailer in the past and they are always a great value, but they also always arrive with the packaging barely hanging in there. The hitch had cut throught the box in four places during shipping and was a bit scratched up. I appreciate the great prices, the super helpful instructional install videos and the free shipping, but I do wish that etrailer coudl figure out the packaging. Love the hitch, love the matte finish, easy to install on our 2014 Subaru Outback Limited.

Comments
I will have our customer service team reach out to you. I recommend touching up the affected places on the hitch with a rust resistant paint. This will help to prevent rust and also you will have it on hand for regular hitch maintenance.

The etrailer tow hitch is a great and slightly cheaper alternative. The directions were easy to follow. Just need the proper tools and a plus of you have a helper. That wire bolt feeder is genius!

by:

install was fairly easy by myself. used ratchet strap to secure exhaust and hold hitch while mounting. Exhaust hanger removal tool is very helpful during install.

by:
2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

etrailer's videos are very helpful. You will want to use ramps for room to work. I attached a strap from the hatchback door latch hoop above the bumper to the safety chain loop on the hitch to hold the rear of the hitch up to make the job manageable. I don't have a 17/32" drill bit so used a 1/2" bit and opened the mounting hole a very small amount with a round file.

by:

This is a good hitch. I've bought and installed several Curt Mfg. hitches in the past. For this install, I chose etrailer due to the matte black finish and slightly cheaper price.
Time will tell if this hitch has the great quality I've experienced with the gloss black CURT Mfg. hitches. I hope it resists weather and fading as well.
etrailer has been fantastic with speed of processing my order, communication, and shipment. I ordered thinking it would be a weekend project. I came home to find it on Wednesday and had it on that evening.
Extremely pleased thus far.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Custmer service is great. They keep you well informed from the time you place the order to the time its delivered.
The quality of the etrailer brand hitch is very apparent to the point that I would rate it above the others and making for a trouble free installation
The hitch will be used for a platform bike rack.

great product. Install was east. No problems with the hitch. Would recommend to anyone.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

When reinstalling the muffler heat shield, there is one hitch bolt that interferes with remounting the heat shield. All you need to do is mark and drill out the location of the one hitch bolt that's under the heat shield. Once hitch is installed and muffler is still hanging down, place the heat shield in its original location with the 2 small bolts under the muffler. Then in order to mark the hitch bolt location under the heat shield, take a hammer and tap on the heat shield to indent the hitch bolt location. Take the heat shield off and drill the hitch bolt location on the heat shield. Take the nut off that hitch bolt, reinstall the heat shield with the two small bolts behind the muffler and the nut on the hitch.
I cut out the location of the bolt on the heat shield but I should have drilled it.
Hitch was an easy install. I recommend having a step drill that's at least 1". Impressed with the hitch but was slightly disappointed that hitch was scratched up when opening the box.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Hitch order and delivery was smooth and as promised. Hitch will be primarily used for a bike rack, bike rack installs simply and fits as expected. Install was relatively easy and the video is very informative on how each step of the install will go. I don't have access to a lift so I used some ramps which did provided the necessary clearance to drop the exhaust and do the required drilling to install the hitch. A couple of notes on the install. (1) dropping the exhaust is very easy however reinstalling the hangers after install was the most difficult part of the process. There maybe an order on which hanger to install first but it will take some strength to get the hangers all back together (2) drilling into the frame with a step bit was super easy, I was concerned this might be difficult but there was really no challenge with this but I did buy a better step bit which cost around $60. As others noted, be carful of the metal bits while drilling they are hot and fly everywhere (3) When using the feed wires; only thread the bolt maybe 3 times - I was paranoid to loose the bolt in the frame and over thread one of the wires which made it far more difficult to get the wire off the bolt once it was put through the frame and hitch. (4) I used a 1/2" bit to drill the second set of holes instead of the recommended 7/16". The 1/2" provided better access for the bolt to drop through the frame. (5) Install assumes ~ an hour to install; this is about right but end to end I think it's closer to 2 hours especially if you don't have access to a lift.

by:

Easy to install. I'm in my mid 60s, my son said he would install the hitch for me. He was in the middle of something else so I started. Had all but one bolt installed by the time he came back to help.

Subaru

Just put on etrailers hitch. This is my third one that I have installed from etrailer on my past Subaru. I went with the etrailer hitch because I liked the matte black finish over the gloss black Curt. This one is easier than the Draw- Tite because it weighs less and I was able to handle it myself. I would suggest using a good step drill bit when enlarging the holes and make sure they are big enough. It took me 2 hours to complete mainly because of cutting the new holes and enlarging the other holes. Hitch was delivery very timely from etrailer just like the previous ones that I installed.

by:

Just what I needed!
The folks at etrailer
have customer service figured out! I truly believe if every business had customer service like what I have consistently received from etrailer that the world would be a much better place!
What can I say? I called to ask some questions (which they answered very professionally) it showed up 2 days after ordering it off the website and it installed exactly like the tutorial video.

by:
2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Fit and finish are above average. The satin finish is by far the best for this application. Keep in mind the Subaru Outback does not have much room to work with, so plan for extra time for your install and using a step drill bit to enlarge the access hole is a real time saver.

by:

Works great! I had to make 2 extra holes more than what I had thought originally but even still it took me and my buddy (with no lift) around 2 hours to install. Overall, great product for a good price with good instructions.

by:
2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

I wasn't aware that the ball was welded to the mount. I wouldn't have purchased it had I looked closer at the pictures before ordering. Otherwise nice curt product as usual.

by:
2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Pretty straightforward installation, went exactly as the video let me to expect. The fish wire for pulling the bracket and carriage bolt into the frame in through the whole is brilliant!
