What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or by redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.

Why is Tongue Weight So Important?

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.

Measuring Tongue Weight at the Coupler

etrailer Tongue Weight Scale at the Coupler

The etrailer tongue weight scale has 2 different configurations, which provides you with some nice flexibility when you're loading up your trailer. The standard configuration lets you measure your trailer's tongue weight at the coupler.

First, get set up on stable, level ground - like your driveway or a parking lot - to ensure that the scale will function properly. Position the scale right under your coupler so that the ball will fit into the coupler's socket. Lower your trailer down until its weight is fully supported by the scale and not the jack. Then use the scale's gauge to determine the tongue weight.

Measuring Tongue Weight at the Jack

etrailer Tongue Weight Scale at the Jack

You can also use this scale at the trailer jack, without the hassle of having to disconnect and move your truck or trailer out of the way. Just attach the scale to your jack's 2" inner tube instead. To set up the scale, remove the pins and clips, pull out the center support tube, and replace it with just the top portion of the scale, which includes the gauge and hitch ball. The scale will sit upside down in the foot, with the ball on the bottom. Once it's in place, secure the scale to the foot with one of the pins.

To attach the scale to your jack, first crank the trailer jack until the footplate or wheel is about 8" off the ground. Then remove the footplate or wheel from the jack and replace it with the scale, pinning the scale in place. Lower the jack until the scale's footplate is sitting on the ground. Unlatch the coupler from the hitch ball and raise your trailer until it is supported entirely by the jack (and the scale). Then use the scale's gauge to determine the tongue weight.

Note: The etrailer tongue weight scale is not intended as a trailer support device. The scale should not be left on the jack during travel or storage.

In my review of the tongue scale, in the following pictures, you can see in the picture the scale in action with the tongue weight is 2,000 lbs. after all the weight is removed off the tongue jack. The dry weight of the Toyhauler is 10,926 lbs. and the GVWR is 16,000 lbs. I built a box with padding to protect the scale from damage. The reason I purchased this scale is to know what the tongue weight is when the weight with and without a UTV/Side by Side is inside the Toyhauler trailer. The garage is 17 feet long and the total payload capacity of the trailer is 5,074 lbs. If you but have a 14 ft. long or 12 ft. long toy and drive it into the trailer, were you place the toy inside the trailer the 17 ft. long garage. It can have a big effect on tongue weight if the toy is centered over the triple axle or is farther forward or the toy is closer to the loading ramp. The weight of a 2,500 lb. toy can move a lot of weight around and inside the trailer when you have 3 or 5 ft. of space to achieve the correct loading to stay within the (1,600 to 2400 lbs. when fully loaded) or 10% to 15% rule on the bumper pull tongue weight guidelines. The total tongue weight is 2,000 lbs. with the trailer almost down to the dry weight rating. Because there is no toy inside the trailer to counterbalance the nose weight of the Toyhauler the trailer tongue weight is higher than it should be so a weight distribution hitch is critical.

by:

Had no idea what my tongue weight was, and yes it was over my 2021 Ram capacity. Moved heavy stuff to rear storage. Light stuff to forward and wIthin a few minutes was under max tongue weight. Super easy to use, now I have peace of mind. Went from 1175 down to 1025.

by:

Reads 11% low over the entire range, compared to 2 precision scales I use for corner balancing racecars.

Nice looking piece, but not accurate.

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. This gauge has a 3 percent margin of error and it should not be as high as eleven percent.

Took some fiddling to get enough cribbing underneath it to be sure the trailer was level when I weighed the tongue. Then, while it was stored in a trailer compartment, it leaked some of the oil.

Great item, my only suggestion would be having this item available in a 0 to 1000 lb capacity for those lighter loads and smaller trailers. The 0 - 2000 scale is a bit less detailed for those trailer tongue weights in the 500 to 800 pound range and is correspondingly less accurate with the 2000 pound scale. The larger scale makes reading these lower weights less accurate. The "damped" fluid filled gauge is a nice feature and the scale seems to be accurate even with lighter loads.

by:

I have rated the scale at a 4 star for now. I will do an update shortly. The reason for this is as follows.

I received this unit yesterday in a box that showed no damage and appeared well packed.
The directions say “check” for leaks, my unit had none. A general overall inspection revealed a strong and well built unit. However, the actual scale indicator dial read 200# high off of zero.

A quick call to etrailer and a replacement is on the way. No hassle, arguing, or attitude simply a replacement piece.

I really like what I see and can’t wait to get the new unit. I will update my rating when I have a accurate scale. I suspect the 4 star will go to 5.

The you etrailer for your great customer service.

Comments
As I stated in my prior review I liked the scale from the time I received it. etrailer did ship a new scale with the gauge set at zero. No hassle what-so-ever. I have now used the scale about 8-10 times and very happy with it. Just recently I was shopping for another product on-line. I had questions so I looked for a seller that had tech support. After calling and speaking with the text I realized the seller was etrailer. I changed from a questioner to a buyer. I am very pleased with etrailer and their products

Works great. I like the two options for positioning the gauge. 4 starts here because I have a light weight trailer and a tow vehicle with a max tongue weight of 500 pounds. The 2000 pound scan is usable, but would prefer a smaller range. It is much easier to use than using a cargo scale, gives me piece of mind I am not overload my tow vehicle, and ensures I have the proper trainer GVW to tongue weight ratio.

by:

Product is excellent. As soon as I got it, I checked out my travel trailer tongue weight. Shipping is a bit tedious, but it did arrive one day early from the original estimate, so i shouldn't really be complaining at all since I went with the cheapest option.

by:

Used it with my cargo trailer! On 2 occasions I had to redistribute the weight to provide me with the proper tongue weight for the weight of the trailer! My son is currently using it when he loads his travel trailer!

by:

I'm always loading different equipment on my trailer. This scale is easy to work with, doesn't take up much space. Does exactly what's it's supposed to do and helps me adjust tongue weight accurately.

by:

The Tongue weight Scale work almost good, we had a accident trying it out, we was at a campground and was on almost level pad as we was lowing the camper on to the Scale the one wheel chuck gave out and camper rolled over it, tongue went down to the ground

by:

Great tool to tune in your trailer load. After a very bad experience with the wrong hitch & tongue weight set-up, my rig is now dialed in and absolutely no sway. Easy to use and take with you.

by:

This tongue weight scale is very solid, well built and easy to use. I used it to properly position a 325 gallon water tank on my 7x12 tandem axle utility trailer. I needed to verify a 650 lb tongue weight when tank was full. Great design and quality.

by:

Smartest move I've ever made when loading and towing my trailer. It's super easy to use this scale in multiple ways and now know that the trailer is properly balanced. I'm certain that in previous years I've over loaded the tongue wt just to ensure the trailer wouldn't sway.
Thank-You etrailer!

by:

This tongue weight scale works very well and will be a well-needed addition to our Camping travels. It is extremely heavy duty and simple to use and easy to read. I have ordered several products from etrailer since buying our travel trailer and have never been disappointed with any of the products.

by:

This thing is wonderful! Makes distributing trailer loads easy and assured, most especially when using my 48" hitch extender.

by:

Well made product the provides versatility in measuring tongue weight. I used it both ways and was happy to see the results matched. The unit has a easily readable scale on the gauge. I taped up the protective cardboard cover that was over the gauge when it arrived so that I can use it over and over again. Perhaps a plastic version would make a great addition in the future. Its quality and piece of mind at a great price from a solid reliable company

by:

Face of gauge is plastic and cracked quite easily. Gauge seemed rather low quality. I thought having it on the foot with the tower would be easier, but it was actually quite unstable when under weight. Bought one of the smaller scales offline that I like better. Just have to build up a stable platform on larger timber or plastic leveling blocks.

by:

worked as advertised, measured tongue weight and allowed us to determine adjustments based on solar upgrades and new lithium battery.

by:

As far as I know it is working fine. I have no way to check its accuracy, but I think it is all right. It opened my eyes as to what I was really carrying. My trailer tongue weight was 200 lbs. higher than I thought it would be. I am glad that I bought it.

by:

Never believe what the dealer or trailer manufacturer says about tongue weight. Mine was way heavier than advertised. I was so close to maximum that I needed to redistribute items to lighten the load. This was a GREAT INVESTMENT.

by:

Although I've only used it a handful of times, Getting the actual weight of my trailer is invaluable. Very easy to use, and useful for multiple platforms.

by:

I wasn't aware that the ball was welded to the mount. I wouldn't have purchased it had I looked closer at the pictures before ordering. Otherwise nice curt product as usual.

by:

Works really well and seems to be fairly accurate. Helps to manage the hitch weight which helps with knowing the payload being applied to my tow vehicle.

by:

Upon receiving my etrailer tongue weight scale I was very disappointed to see that it is made in China. Your website did not mention that this scale is China made. I would be willing to pay more for an American made product.

Also I just ordered a Featherlite 22 foot bumper pull trailer. As you are aware it will be a year before delivery to me. The scale will be used when I receive the trailer. I certainly hope you will stand behind any warrantee issues at that time.

Comments
The scale itself is produced in the USA. Some components of the scale are sourced globally. I think you will be quite satisfied with this scale. Not the mention, there is a limited lifetime warranty.
