Troubleshooting AccuTrac Brake Controller on 1991 Toyota HZJ Landcruiser

Question:

I have a tekonsha accutrac brake controller I have just fitted to my 91 HZJ Toyota landcruiser. I have power to the controller and signal from the brake light going to the brake controller. The green light comes on when I plug in the trailer. However no signal comes from the controller to activate the trailer brakes. The green light does not turn red to indicate that the controller is working, wether from the pedal or the slid switch on the controller itself.

Since you mention that the green light does not turn red and there is no signal coming from the Tekonsha Accutrac brake controller, I would start by adjusting the HARD effort to a higher setting.

I would check to make sure that the controller was mounted correctly in your 1991 Toyota HZJ Landcruiser. Per the installation instructions, this controller must be mounted from 20 degrees nose down to 70 degrees nose up and the internal sensor arm adjusted accordingly.

If this does not correct the problem, the next step would be to cut the brake output wire approximately 6 inches behind the brake controller and use a circuit tester to test to make sure that the brake controller is sending out power. If it is not, the brake controller will need to be replaced.
