You can convert your Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9044 to basically be a # TH9045 by simply replacing the shank and backbone assembly of your current rack with a # 753-3709 and removing the 2-bike extension. I spoke to my contact at Thule and she said that this is the only way to accomplish this.

This will allow your rack to be used in a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

If I use this replacement shank (#753-3709) with my Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9044 and a Curt hitch #11711, does this eliminate the weight reduction penalty associated with a 1.25" to 2" adapter and can I use the T2 add on (TH9046) without issue? Thanks.

Using this replacement shank would keep you from cutting your tongue weight in half like you would see if you used an adapter. While this does mean that your T2 Classic will now fit the Curt Hitch # 11711 , since the hitch is only a Class I this means that you are restricted to only carrying 2 bikes so you won't be able to use the add on. Technically yes you can install the add on but it will place bikes out too far and the leverage will put too much pressure on the hitch making it unsafe.
