We offer several trailer hitches that are designed to work with your 2010 Toyota Matrix. I recommend always going with the Class ll over a Class l hitch. There are more options for accessories and a Class ll hitch has a higher weight capacity than the Class l. Class l hitches are limited to carrying 2 bikes.
I recommend the Curt Round Tube Receiver Hitch, part # C12221. This is a Class ll hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. A note from Curt states all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt.
The bike rack I recommend is the Thule Camber Bike Rack, part # TH9058. This carrier features anti-sway arms that help protect bikes from dings and scratches. This rack folds away from the rear of the vehicle, giving you access to the cargo area. You can add a locking hitch pin using # THSTL2.
If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
