Recommended Swing-Away Hitch-Mounted Bike Carrier For 2012 Ford Expedition

I have a 2012 ford expedition. I am interested in a thule swingaway 4 bike carrier. I like the $499 model because it has the integrated hitch lock and bikes lock. My problem is that every review of it, on your site, and on others says that the hitch lock is of poor design and that the 1 1/4 inch to 2 inch adapter is also a poor design. I thought about buying the $399 model and then just piecing together the rest of the components or maybe I am looking at the wrong bike carrier altogether?

The Thule Apex Swing 4 Bike Rack, part # TH9027XT is a nice bike carrier for your 2012 Ford Expedition. This bike rack will carry up to 4 bikes with a combined weight of 140 lbs and the carrier attaches to a 2 inch receiver opening. The included anti-rattle hitch pin locks the bike rack to the receiver on your Expedition. This has the swing-away feature that allows you access to the rear cargo area of your vehicle without unloading the bikes. The built-in cable locks in the mast secure the bikes to the carrier and help prevent theft.

If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
