Compatibility of Thule OutWay 3-Bike Rack TH56BV on 2015 Ford Explorer with Rear Spoiler

Question:

Thule OutWay 3- Bike Rack TH56BV is recommended for 2015 Ford Explore. How about the rear spoiler? Is the spoiler really strong enough for the weight load of 3 bikes? Would you please kindly double check?

The roofline spoiler on your 2014 Ford Explorer is new on this series and you are indeed wise to be concerned about bike rack fits with this cosmetic feature.

The Thule OutWay # TH56BV 3-bike trunk-mount rack uses 2 rubber-coated cables for attachment. While the spoiler will not really bear the weight of the carrier and bikes, it will surely have pressure put on it. We do offer a specialized carrier from Hollywood Racks, their Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack # HRF2-3 that is designed for vehicles with roofline spoilers. The rack does require either raised factory side rails or roof rack crossbars on the roof for attachment of the upper straps. I confirmed with my technical contact there that this rack will work for you and put no pressure at all on your spoiler.

Honestly, the best option for your vehicle is hitch-mount rack. A hitch rack puts NO pressure on your new car's sheet metal (which must be kept very clean at all times when a trunk rack is used) or its glass. A hitch rack will load the weight burden of the rack and bikes onto the frame - the strongest part of the vehicle. A hitch rack means you do not lose use of your rear wiper. Installing a hitch (if you do not already have one) also means you can use other hitch-mount accessories, such as a cargo carrier.

The 2-inch Class III hitch I suggest is the cost-effective Curt # C13386 which bolts on using included hardware. No drilling is required.

With this Class III hitch in place you can choose from among the compatible Class III bike carriers shown on the provided link. Hitch racks offer you many more options and convenience features.
For example, Yakima's FullSwing 4 Bike Rack # Y02465 offers 4-bike capacity (or extra room for 3 bikes), includes locks for the rack itself and your bikes, and can swing away from the rear cargo area even when loaded with bikes. It is protected by a limited lifetime warranty.
