What Vehicle Axles Do Snow Chains Install On

do you put chains on the front tires of a 2 wheel drive vehicle?

Expert Reply:

On a 2 wheel drive vehicle you want to at least have chains on the drive axle. If it's a rear wheel drive vehicle then you would go with the rear axle and vice versa for a front wheel drive vehicle.

Ideally having chains on all 4 wheels will provide you with the best possible traction for braking, turning and accelerating. Before you install chains on your vehicle you will need to check with the owners manual of the vehicle to determine if there are any restrictions on chain usage.

I also attached a help article on tire chains for you to check out as well.
