Can a Sidewinder Pin Box be Rotated By Hand and 5th Wheel Hitch for 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500

Hello, I am going to purchase a 2015 chevy 3500 short box in the near future. Box lenght is 6.5. I will be towing a 2012 Heartland Big Country 3250ts fifth wheel coach. I am considering the purchase of the 5th Airborne Sidewinder. Are there angle limitations when it comes to hitching and unhitching the Sidewinder? Seems to me like the pin box can be moved into alignment with the hitch box manually when necessary.

A Sidewinder pin box would be very difficult to move by hand. It is designed that way on purpose because if it was easy to move that could increase the likelihood of trailer sway.

As far as the angle you would have the same limitations using a Sidewinder as you would with any pin box. To compensate for awkward angles a hitch that has a full floating head (can move freely in any direction, not just side to side and front to back) would be the best hitch to use.

If you choose to go with a Sidewinder then you would need to use a fixed hitch and not a sliding hitch. And there are only certain pin boxes that are compatible with Sidewinders. I would need to know the manufacturer and model number of the pin box to determine if there is a Sidewinder that will fit. this information can usually be found on a sticker or plate on the pin box.

For your 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500 I recommend custom installation kit # C16411-204. For a hitch I recommend Reese hitch # RP30928. It is rated for 20,000 pounds and has a double-pivot head, similar to a full floating head. I have linked a video review of this hitch for you.

I have also included a link to our help article on Sidewinders.
