Trailer Hitch, Wiring, and Accessories for a 2013 Ram 1500 SLT

Question:

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 SLT that I want to equip with a trailer hitch so I can haul an average size skid-steer or mini-excavator on a trailer. There is nothing on the truck now as far as a hitch or components are concerned so I will be starting from scratch. My question is, what do you recommend as far as a trailer hitch set-up that I should purchase and install? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For your 2013 Ram 1500 I recommend Class IV trailer hitch # 14374. It is rated for 1,000 pounds tongue weight and 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight. When used with weight distribution it is rated for 1,200/12,000 pounds. Check the truck owner's manual for the truck's capacities and go by the lower of the 2 ratings, the hitch or the truck.

I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK2416. It comes with a ball mount with a 3 inch rise or 4 inch drop It also includes a 2 inch ball, 2-5/16 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

If your truck did not come with trailer wiring you would need # 119147KIT to add a 4-Way flat trailer connector. I have linked videos and instructions for you as well.
