Recommended Options For Carrying 4 Bikes On 2003 Mazda 6 Sedan

Hello, I am looking for a trailer for my 2003 Mazda 6i 4 door sedan with spoiler to carry 4 bikes. The one I found in your site is C11308 It says the difficulty is 4/10 but requires drilling even though it looks like a bolt on unit. Can you please advice or provide a manual for me to take a look to see if this is something I can do myself? Thanks,

The trailer hitches we have that are designed to fit your 2003 Mazda 6 sedan are Class l hitches. Any hitch-mounted bike carrier that is designed for a 1-1/4 inch Class l hitch is limited to 2 bikes. You have a few options to consider for carrying 4 bikes but there will not be one single carrier that can handle all 4 bikes on your Mazda.

I recommend a trunk mount carrier for 2 of the bikes and also a roof rack with bike carriers for the other 2 bikes.

The hitch you mentioned, part # C11308 is a Class l hitch and has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Please note that all non-trailer loads like bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth, should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. When installing this hitch you will need to do a bit of drilling. After drilling it is a bolt-on installation. I have attached the installation instructions you can check out.

You could then use a hanging bike rack like the Thule Camber 2-Bike Rack, part # TH9058. This is a tilting rack that allows access to the rear cargo area of your vehicle.

Another option is to use a trunk mounted bike carrier for 2 bikes and a roof rack with 2 bikes.

The trunk-mount carrier I recommend is the Thule OutWay 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH45JV. This carrier should clear your spoiler with no problem and is the absolute easiest to install and remove. This carrier can hold 2 bikes with a capacity of 33 lbs per bike.

If you have no side rails or crossbars on your Mazda I recommend the Rhino-Rack 2500 Series roof rack. This system comes with aero crossbars and all of the hardware to install the roof rack on your Mazda 6. To order this system you will need parts # RRVA118B-2, # RRRLKVA, and # DK043.

The roof rack bike carrier I recommend is the Yakima HighRoad Roof Bike Rack - Wheel Mount - Clamp On Item # Y02114. The weight capacity of this rack is 45 lbs. You will want to place the heavier bikes on the roof rack so save wear and tear on the back of the vehicle.

If you have raised side rails on your Mazda we do not have a roof rack option that will work.

You will want to check your owner's manual or with your dealership to make sure you do not exceed the roof weight capacity on your Mazda 6.
