Can Master Lock Electric Trailer Winch # 2953AT Be Powered from SUVs 12V Accessory Outlet

Can the winch be plugged into a 12v outlet at the back of my SUV?

Expert Reply:

Electric winches such as the Master Lock Electric Trailer Winch # 2953AT can pull significant current when under load. This particular winch draws 20 amps at its rated capacity. An SUV's accessory 12V power outlet cannot deliver the required current to operate a winch at full capacity. These outlets are intended for lower-current-demand items like emergency lights or small air compressors.

Optimum winch operation requires a higher-capacity connection directly to a battery, preferably to a separate dedicated 12V winch battery mounted on the trailer. This method is safest and protects your vehicle's wiring from overload and damage and ensures you'll get the full capacity from the winch.

You can install a battery box like Noco # 329-HM318BKS and install an additional 12V battery. Then simply clip on the terminals included in the Master Lock winch kit when you need to use the winch.

We also offer chargers to let you charge and maintain this additional battery with shore power. CTEK offers their MULTI US 7002 12-Volt Universal Battery Charger # CTEK56353 that delivers a 4-step charge.
