Is Second Spindle Nut Present When Replacing Trailer Hub Components

Question:

I just replaced the bearings on my boat trailer that has a 3500# axle. When I took it apart, from the outside to the inside of the axle, the parts were in this order,... cotter pin, castle nut, washer, outer bearing, hub, inner bearing, seal. Did you notice, there was no spindle nut between the castle nut and the washer. Was the spindle nut missing or is it not necessary,... its the first time Ive taken it apart since I bought this used boat trailer, maybe it was missing. The castle nut is threaded. Thank you.

You described exactly what should be present when you are working with the trailer hub components. The castle nut is the only nut that is threaded on the spindle.

There will be no additional nut between the castle nut and the washer. I have attached a helpful article that explains how to replace the bearing, races and seals on a trailer hub.
