Will Using Weight Distribution System Improve Engine Performance on 1989 Toyota 4Runner When Towing

Question:

I have a 1989 Toyota 4-Runner and I recently purchased a Vintage travel trailer dry weight 1900 lbs. Would using a product like this reduce the work of my engine in any way? I have a stick shift 4 Cylinder engine, and the manual says you can tow up to 3500 lbs with this vehicle/engine, but Im still concerned that it will be hard on it.

The main purpose of a weight distribution system would be to reduce sway and the strain on rear suspension, as well as improve steering, when towing your Vintage travel trailer with your 1989 Toyota 4Runner.

Using a weight distribution system really is a great idea but it would not have any affect on the performance of your engine. I have included an article which covers common weight distribution and sway control questions.

When it comes to performance of your 4Runner, one recommendation that I do have for you is to install a transmission cooler. Since overheating is one of the main causes of transmission failure, using a cooler would help to prolong the life of the transmission, improve overall performance, and prevent heat-related failures. I have included a link to all of our transmission coolers as well as an article for you. I recommend going with the largest cooler that will fit on your vehicle so you will want to measure to see how much room is available in front of the radiator.

For example, our Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, # D12906, measures 13 x 7-1/2 x 3/4 inch. This cooler comes with the Derale Insta-dapt radiator adapter which fits most Toyota 4Runners with 5/16 inch transmission lines, but not all. In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required for installation.
