Recommended Roof Rack for a 2014 Toyota 4Runner SR5 and Thule Atlantis 1600 Cargo Box

Question:

Hey, will this be compatible with a 2014 Toyota 4Runner SR5 and a Thule Atlantis 1600 cargo carrier? Ive seen some reports that aftermarket crossbars that mount on top of the factory rails provide a better fit for Thule cargo carriers than the OEM crossbars that slide into the factory rails. Other reports dont mention any problems with OEM crossbars. My vehicle resembles picture 2, with factory rails running front-to-back. I already have the Thule Atlantis 1600, which fits on another vehicle I have, so Id like to keep that if possible. Thanks in advance for your help!

Malone AirFlow2 roof rack # MPG216 is a fit for your 2014 Toyota 4Runner with factory side rails that run front to back on the vehicle roof. The recommended crossbar spread is 36 inches but can be adjusted as much as the side rails will allow.

The square bars are compatible with a Thule Atlantis 1600 cargo box as well. As far as fit on OEM or aftermarket bars it all depends on the factory bar design as well as which aftermarket bars are used.

OEM bars usually have a lower capacity than aftermarket bars and can sometimes be so close to the roof of the vehicle that some accessories cannot clamp on easily or at all. In this case, the OEM Toyota crossbars are not compatible with Thule boxes that use the Quick Grip or AcuTight mounting hardware (your Atlantis has Quick Grips) so to use the box you would need an aftermarket roof rack.
