Hi! In the instructions, it says you have to install the U shapped piece under the pad. Then you need to replace the plugs. Is the pad necessary? I dont have replacement plugs and wont have time to get them. Thank you,

The pads that are included with the # Y8860031 are designed to help prevent damage to your kayaks. If you don't use them I can't guarantee that your kayaks wouldn't get damaged.
Your best option would be to order the plugs # Y8890058 so that you can get the pads onto the carrier.
