Recommended Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier For 2006 Honda Accord Sedan

Question:

Im looking to buy a hitch mounted bike rack for my 2006 Honda Accord Sedan so Ill need to install a hitch. The particular Thule bike rack Im interested in states not to load more than 2 bikes on a class 1 hitch but if each bike only weighs 30 lbs and the bike rack 25 lbs then the 115 lb total should be well within the 200 lb tongue weight that your hitches for this car are capable of supporting. Do you think it will be okay ? Which make of hitch do you think is the sturdiest and most well built ? Thanks !

Since a Class l hitch is all that we have available for your Accord, you are limited to carrying 2 bikes only in a hitch-mounted carrier. This is not just the weight but also the leverage that exists when you have any carriers installed in the hitch. A Class l hitch limits you to carrying 2 bikes.

The Trailer hitch I recommend for your Accord is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 24787. This is a Class l hitch and has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video for a hitch on an Accord you can check out.

If the Thule rack you are looking at is Class l compatible it may work well for you.

If the Thule carrier is not compatible with a Class l hitch, the bike carrier I recommend for your Accord is the Swagman Trailhead, part # S63360. This bike rack can handle 2 bikes that weigh up to 35 lbs each. This bike rack tilts when empty to allow access to the rear cargo area.

If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
