Selecting Replacement Hubs and Wheels/Tires for 5 x 8-foot Utility Trailer

Question:

Good Afternoon, I have a 5X8 utility trailer. The hubs that were on the trailer were 5 on 5. I am thinking abut buying hub 84545UC1-EZ and wheel AM20436. The common size of tires I am finding is 205/15/R15 will that work for the wheels I picked? I do not know the capacity of the axle. My type of thinking is buying parts for a 3500 pound axle. I found it is easier to find wheels for 5 on 4 1/2 bolt patterns as well. That is I was going to change the hubs since one was bad. I always believe what you do to one side of a trailer do to the other. Hub 84545UC1-EZ Wheel AM20436

We do offer 5-on-5 hubs that you can see on the included link. All are indeed rated for 3500-lb axles as you suggested; please note that your axle should have a sticker or plate on it that tells you its weight rating. These include idler hubs (no brakes) like # 84550BX and # 84545UC1-EZ that you referenced, and hub/drum assemblies like # 84556UC3 for drum brakes.

You'll need to make sure that any new hubs you select use the same inner and outer bearings as those on the trailer now. This is how to ensure the new hubs will fit on your spindles. The linked diagram will show you the usual location and appearance of the bearing part numbers. We list the bearings used for all of our hubs. The hub you referenced, part # 84545UC1-EZ, uses inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649. If your current hubs use these same bearings then these replacement hubs will fit.

We also offer 5-on-5 wheel/tire combinations that come pre-mounted. These are all size ST205/75-15 tires and are available in radial and bias ply types. I linked a page that will show you all of these Load range C combinations. For example, Taskmaster part # AM3S638 is a 15 x 5-inch white wheel with 5-on-5 bolt pattern and a ST205/75D15 Load range C tire. This combination has a rated capacity of 1820-lbs at 50-psi.

The Dexstar wheel you referenced, silver 15 x 5 Mini Mod with 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern # AM20436, can accept a 205/75-15 tire like those shown on the linked page. These tires are available in various weight load ratings to match your trailer capacity. If you want new hubs in this different 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern you'll again need to match up your current bearing set to those in the new hub.

You are correct that it is a good idea to replace both hubs, even if one is not broken. This will ensure that both hubs have the same working lifespan.
