Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2015 or 2016 Subaru Forester

Question:

In another of your help topics, Hitch Recommendations for a 2015 Subaru Forester that Go Over Heat Shield, the text says that hitch will go over the heat shield but in the accompanying video, the heat shield is taken off at the beginning and it is never shown again leaving me to believe that the heat shield is left off. Can you tell me what really happens? I am thinking that probably the hitch installation for the 2016 would be the same as for the 2015. Thanks.

First, for Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75876 the instructions, linked for reference, say that the heat shield will need to be trimmed for bolt clearance for it to remain in place. The other option is just to remove it.

Installation will be identical between the 2015 and 2016 so you can use the video linked as a guide when installing the hitch.

If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

And for trailer wiring you can use # 118467 to add a 4-Way flat connector at the back of the vehicle. I have linked a video showing an example installation of the wiring as well.
