Recommended Combination Engine Oil and Transmission Cooler for 2011 Ford Explorer Limited

Question:

I am looking to install a Transmission or Combination Engine Oil Transmission Cooler on my 2011 Ford Explorer Limited without the OEM tow package. Which route would you recommend going? Please specify the product P/N you recommend. Also, are there any additional items i.e. thermostat, gauges, etc that you would recommend be installed with the kit?

The first thing you will want to check on your 2011 Ford Explorer is if it has a transmission fluid dip stick and a way for you to add fluid. On many newer vehicles, there is a special tool needed to even check or add fluid that the dealer has. If yours is like that then the cooler would have to be professionally installed.

Derale combination cooler # D15902 is the one that I recommend. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation. It is on a different vehicle but it will give you a general idea of the installation process.

If you live in a cold climate then uses a couple of thermostats such as # D25791 with 4 of fitting # D98102 would be a good idea. It will allow fluid to bypass the cooler so that it warms up faster. For a gauge you could use a couple of gauge # D13009.
