Replacement Idler Hub for Older Trailer with 0.99-Inch Spindle Diameter

Question:

I used a digital caliper and found the spindle shaft diameter on my 20 year old Harbor Freight trailer to be 0.99 inches and the Grease Seal Seat was 1.23. It has the 30205 bearings. Can I replace the entire original hub with the AKIHUB-440-2-1K?

Expert Reply:

A replacement hub for your older trailer must use the same bearing set as the original hub. This ensures the hub will fit properly on your spindles. The hub kit you referenced, part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K, uses bearing # L44643 as its inner and outer bearing. This bearing's inner diameter, which fits over the spindle shaft, measures 1.00-inches so it will fit your 0.99-inch spindles as long as they are straight, not tapered. Another kit that will work is part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K which uses the same bearings.

You may care to use a bearing packer tool like # PTW1218 or # ALL647646 to simplify the application of wheel bearing grease using a grease gun like # PTW54290 and wheel bearing grease like # L11465.
