There are a couple of factors that will determine if you are able to use a larger size tire and wheel on your trailer.
First you will want to make sure that your trailer hub will accept a larger size wheel. Many of the trailer hub assemblies we offer that are compatible with 12 inch wheels are not compatible with 13 or 14 inch wheels. Only a small number of hubs will accommodate both a 12 inch wheel or a 13 inch wheel. To determine if your hub can accept a wheel 13 inches or larger, you will want to measure the hub flange. If the hub flange of your trailer hubs measures 6-1/2 inches in diameter, you can you a 13 inch or larger wheel. If the flange measures 5-1/2 inches in diameter, you cannot use a wheel larger than 12 inches.
If you find your hub is capable of using a 13 inch wheel, you will want to make sure your trailer has the clearance for a larger size tire. If your trailer has fenders, the general rule is to make sure you have at least 4-1/2 inches of clearance between the tire and fender. This allows for the movement of the trailer suspension.
Most 12 inch tire and wheels have a 20.5-21.9 inch overall diameter, but when you step up to a 13 inch wheel the overall diameter can be 24.1-24.4 inches. This means that with a 13 inch rim and tire, the tire will sit anywhere from 1.1 - 1.95 inches closer to your trailer underside or fender. Additionally, 13 inch wheels and tires are typically 7 - 8 inches wide, which is at least 1.5 inches wider than our widest 12 inch wheels.
If your hub is capable of supporting a larger wheel and you have enough clearance for a taller and wider wheel and hub, you can exchange your 12 inch wheel for a larger wheel.
