Does Weight Distribution System Increase Towing Capacity For 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Hello, I see most all of the hitches you offer for the 2500 Sprinter show a tongue weight of 750# and max towing 7500# when used with a weight distribution hitch. Does this mean that I can tow more than the factory 500# tongue weight and 5000# trailer weight legally?

Expert Reply:

When towing with your Sprinter, you will not be able to tow a trailer that weighs more than the lowest rated component, either your Sprinter or the trailer hitch you install on the Sprinter.

With that being said, if you install a trailer hitch like part # 75549 it has a 600-lb tongue weight capacity and a towing weight capacity of 6,000-lbs. If you use a weight distribution system with the # 75549 hitch it does increase the tongue weight capacity to 750 lbs and the towing weight capacity to 7,500-lbs. It will not however increase the towing capacity for the Sprinter. This hitch will not work with dually models or models that have a frame measurement of 30-3/8 inches outside to outside.

In order to choose the correct weight distribution system, you will need to know the total tongue weight when choosing a system. The total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully loaded ready to tow trailer added to the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the towing vehicle. You would then choose a system where the total tongue weight falls close to the middle of the range of the weight distribution system.

For example, if you find your total tongue weight is 700 lbs I recommend a system like part # RP66559. The tongue weight range for this system is 500 to 1000 lbs. This system also has sway control which helps in windy conditions and when large trucks pass by on the highway. You will also need a hitch ball. For a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 19286 and for a 2 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 63845.

I'll link you to some FAQ articles about weight distribution as well as to a demonstration video for the system I recommended.
