Hitch and Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2016 Mazda CX-5

Question:

I am going to buy a pop up trailer and am thinking about adding electric brakes as that is recommended for my 2016 mazda cx 5 when towing over 1000 lbs. It is nearly impossible to find anything under a 1000 lbs. Some of the smaller pop ups have 4 lug hubs. It is possible to add electric brakes to 4 lug hubs? Looks like I would need to put on 5 lug hubs if thats possible, then new wheels and tires. Probably not worth buying a trailer with 4 lugs. Thank you

We sell hub/drums with 4 on 4 inch bolt patterns like the part # 8-173-16UC3 which would then call for brake assemblies part # 23-48 for the right hand side and part # 23-47 for the left hand side.

If you are still in the process of shopping for a pop up I would recommend you find one with brakes already installed so that you don't have to install them yourself. I attached a help article on adding brakes to a trailer.

For a hitch for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 you would want the Draw Tite part # 76138 which is a confirmed fit and would work well for towing.

Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

For trailer wiring you would then want the part # 118563 which is a confirmed fit. To convert this to a 7-way so that you can install a brake controller you would want the part # ETBC7.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
