Compatibility of Thule Roadway 4 Bike Carrier TH914XT with 1-1/4 Hitch on a 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX

Ive only used the Thule Roadway 4 Bike Carrier with a 2inch hitch so far and now Im switching cars. Will I need a stabilizer strap if I use it with a 1 1/4inch hitch on a 2012 Subaru WRX? Is there a lowered weight capacity with the smaller hitch.

Yes, you are correct the Curt 1-1/4 hitch # C11317 requires you to use a stabilization strap like the # 18050 for any non-trailer loads which means accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers.

Typically the tongue weight capacity is lowered from the 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers to the 2 inch receivers, but I have seen some that are the same. The weight capacity of the Curt hitch # C11317 is 200lbs tongue weight and 2,000lbs towing. It's important to see what your vehicle is rated for because you will ultimately be restricted to the lowest rated item in your setup.

The Roadway should have the sleeve that will remove to show the 1-1/4 shank to fit your new WRX. The catch is that you will only be able to carry 2 bikes on the 4 bike rack because of the lowered capacity of the hitch on your vehicle being a Class I. For example if your vehicle has a 200lb tongue weight then you will need to subtract the weight of the bike rack, which is 38lbs, to determine how much weight you can load into the 2 sets of cradles. (200-38=162; 162/2=81lbs per bike)

If you plan on transporting any alternative framed bikes, like most women's bikes are, you will need to use a bike adapter bar like # UB01 to mount them properly.

I have linked the above mentioned products to this page for your convenience.
