How to Find the Factory 4-way/7-way on 2006 Ford F-150 XLT to Install Prodigy P3 Brake Controller
Question:
Im a little stumped. I have a 2006 F-150 XLT. Im pretty sure I have the connector under the steering column to plug in a trailer brake controller. And Ive seen the 7-way adapter harness that works for F-150s up to 2003, that looks like it would work for mine. But if I search 2006, I only get the plug, and no harness options. Im going to drop my spare tire tonight, and look more into what the connections are, and wires going thru them. Do you have any other suggestions, or am I chasing the wrong idea? I am the second owner of this truck, so Im not 100 sure its wired for trailer brakes. Thanks for your help!

You are on the right track, your 2006 Ford F-150 XLT should be wired for a trailer. I went out and looked at my boss' 2005 Ford F-150 XLT which has the same wiring setup as your 2006 Ford F-150 and I took some pictures to show you where the wiring is located. You should have the wiring already pre wired for a 7 way or 4 way on your truck.
The port for the brake controller will be under your dash closer to the center console. You will have to remove the paneling to find the plug. I attached a photo of the plug on your truck with a yellow box around it so you know what it looks like when you try and find it. The port under the dash will be met with the Plug In Adapter # 3035-P which will plug directly into your brake controller and then into the plug into the 6 pin plug under your dash.
To control the brakes on your trailer I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 for your truck. This controller is easy to install and has programmable pre-sets and easy to understand diagnostics so you don't have to look up trouble codes.
I recommend dropping your spare tire so you are able to see what kind of wiring you have at the back end of your vehicle. You should find a round factory 7 way plug that may have a dust cover on it. You will need a 7 way plug to use trailer brakes.
To complete your wiring installation for the trailer, I recommend installing a 7-way and 4 pole connector on the back of your truck. If your F-150 indeed has the factory 7 way round plug located along the drivers side frame rail by the spare tire behind the back bumper, I recommend using the Tekonsha Connector # 74682. I recommend the 7&4 way connector because both the 7&4 way connectors are used on most trailers in the market. The Tekonsha 7-way and 4 Pole Connector would plug right in to the round 7 way. I attached photos of how it should look.
My boss' truck has the Pollak Wiring Connector # PK11893-11932 installed on his truck which is a similar setup as the Tow Ready Connector, but the Pollak includes a convenient addition 7-way connector that allows for a 7-way connection in the truck bed which is idea for many 5th wheel customers.
If you do not have some of these wires, either under the dash, or in the back of your truck, let me know and we can troubleshoot further.
I attached a video of a brake controller installation on a 2005 Ford F-150 which will be the same process for your vehicle. I also attached a wiring diagram and wiring help article you may find helpful. The brake controller and wiring fit guide for your vehicle is also attached for your convenience.
