The construction of the Erickson Over-The-Cab Truck Bed Ladder Rack, part # EM07707 uses the back rail to make the ladder rack stable and is not a removable part. I confirmed this with my contact at Erickson.
You may be able to place something between the back rail and the forward rail if it happens to be taller than the ladder rack which is 32-7/6 inches tall.
