Recommendation for Thule Snow Tire Chains For 2005 Toyota Prius
Question:
I am wanting to order Thule chains for my 2005 Prius, whose anti-skid mechanism kicks in whenever I get on slick snow, stranding the car . It looks like low profile chains are not actually required for my vehicle, but are they advisable? It appears that the CG-9 does not have the quick release feature, which is attractive to me. What would you suggest?

Tire chains are usually categorized by what tire size they will fit, not by vehicle. Even though tire chains may fit your specific tire size, you should always check your vehicle owners manual to see if it is acceptable to use snow chains on your vehicle. The tire size that your Prius comes equipped from the factory is 185/65/15.
I would recommend the Thule CG9 Self-Adjusting Tire Chains, part # TH00023070, that you referred to. These chains are simple to install on your vehicle. Thule actually came to our offices and demonstrated the Thule CG9 Self-Adjusting Tire Chains on a vehicle and it took only a matter of minutes to install. The CG9 does have a release that makes removal of the chains very quick and simple.
When installing tire chains, it is recommended to install on the powered drive wheels of the vehicle. In your case you would install the chains on the 2 front wheels of your Toyota Prius. Part # TH00023070 is sold as a pair and includes 2 tire chains.
As stated, you will want to check with your owners manual or your Toyota dealership to see if you can use tire chains on your 2005 Toyota Prius.
I have linked an FAQ on Thule Tire Chains and an FAQ review on tire chains which also includes each state law regarding the use of tire chains.
